Ruline Steininger says she’s seen many things during her 103 years on earth, including two worldwide depressions, a cure for polio and a man walking on the moon.
But she’s hoping to see another major event soon: The election of the first woman president.
Steininger, a retired schoolteacher from Pleasant Hill, Iowa, was 7 in August 1920, when the 19th Amendment was ratified, giving women the right to vote.
Steininger has voted in every election since 1936, but told CNN that the November ballot represents something she never thought possible, as she plans to cast her vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton.
“I couldn’t imagine a woman. I mean, it’s always been a man and I just assumed it might always be,” she said.
Another woman born before her right to vote existed, Jerry Emmett, 102, presented Arizona’s delegates for Clinton at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.
Steininger admires Clinton, but admits she’s also considering what might happen to America should GOP nominee Donald Trump be elected.
“I’m shocked. I don’t know what has gotten into people,” she said, according to RawStory.com. “If he’s elected president, it’s going to be a national disaster, which we will likely take years to recover from.”
Because of that, Steininger said she has only one option to ensure Clinton’s election in November.
“I’ve got a big job ahead of me ... I’ve got to live!” she told CNN. “After that, OK, I can die if I want to, but I’m going to live until she’s elected.”
