Watching a new series can be a gamble. It can feel like you’re never sure how much of your time you really want to invest. There’s always the possibility that just as you’re getting hooked, you learn it’s getting the axe.

This year’s new crop of shows is no different — there will be casualties. But if you’re looking for something new to watch this fall, the networks have already committed to several new series, which guarantees you at least a full season of watching.

NBC

”This Is Us” and “The Good Place”

We’re only three episodes deep, but if you’re anything like us, you’re already addicted to “This Is Us.” The interconnected family drama from “Crazy Stupid Love” writer Dan Fogelman has us in tears every week, and thankfully, NBC picked it up for an 18-episode season. That should give viewers sufficient time to get to know “The Big Three” and co.

Meanwhile, NBC ordered a 13-episode season from the get-go for heavenly comedy “The Good Place,” starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson. While nearly half the season has already aired, it’s not too late to get caught up online.

ABC

“Designated Survivor” & “Speechless”

ABC debuted five new series this fall, but so far the network has only committed to two. Kiefer Sutherland’s buzzy new show “Designated Survivor” was picked up for 22 episodes, along with the Minnie Driver–led “Speechless,” which also got a full order.

Fox

“Lethal Weapon”

After debuting four new shows this fall, Fox has only given the full go-ahead to “Lethal Weapon,” starring Damon Wayans Sr. and Clayne Crawford. The freshman series, a reboot of the buddy-cop film franchise that launched in 1987, was picked up for an 18-episode season.

CBS

“Kevin Can Wait,” “Bull” and “MacGyver”

CBS knows what its audience wants, and boy, did they ever give it to them. This fall’s new series are some of the most CBS-y new shows to ever air on the network. With some of the highest ratings for a new crop of shows, it’s no surprise the network picked up the three shows it’s debuted thus far for full season orders.

FX

“Atlanta” and “Better Things”

FX had already committed to 10-episode seasons for both freshmen series this fall. It didn’t take long before the network confirmed both shows would be back for a second season.

HBO

”High Maintenance”

The first season of HBO’s “High Maintenance” is actually almost over, since the network only ordered six episodes of the series, which follows a weed delivery guy and his various clients in New York City. HBO announced in September that the show, which got its start on Vimeo, would be renewed, though there’s no word on how many episodes will be delivered for Season 2.
