Alec Baldwin probably thought his stint playing then-presidential-candidate Donald Trump would be short-lived prior to Nov. 8. Of course, what many had assumed to be impossible happened and Trump is now the president-elect, which means Baldwin has a job at “Saturday Night Live” for the next (fingers crossed) four years.
After skipping the first post-election “SNL” episode, Baldwin is set to make his grand return to Studio 8H this weekend and reprise his much-celebrated Trump impression, per Vanity Fair. Tackling a Trump presidency humorously is certainly no easy task, but it seems like the “30 Rock” star is up for the challenge at least every once in a while.
“I’m going to do it again this weekend, but not all that often. There was a lot of things online that was said about it — like why didn’t I do it after the election?” he told Vanity Fair. “I was booked that weekend. Not even other jobs; we have things to do. It crashes every weekend.”
Hilaria, Baldwin’s wife, echoed his sentiments and explained that participating in “SNL” takes a major toll on weekend family time.
“When he does ‘SNL’, it takes a big chunk out of it because you’re up so late, and then it eats into the next day. And for us, with little kids, it’s hard,” she said.
In the wake of Trump’s victory, the late-night sketch comedy show adopted a more solemn approach to the news by opening last weekend’s episode with Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton singing “Hallelujah.” Only time will tell how “SNL” will cover his presidency, but what we do know is that America could use a laugh.
