Beloved Archie Comics Get A Dark Makeover In New TV Series 'Riverdale'

It looks like there's a murder involved?

Forget what you know, because almost nothing is the same in the new CW series, “Riverdale,” inspired by the classic Archie comic books.

In a new preview for the show ― which is roughly 100 times darker than we anticipated ― fans get a first look at the main character (Archie Andrews, played by KJ Apa) and his two love interests, Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Betty (Lili Reinhart). There’s also a Sprouse twin (Cody!) who plays Jughead. Earlier this year, Entertainment Weekly reported that Shannon Purser, aka Barb from “Stranger Things” would appear on the series, though she’s not in the trailer.

Somehow the gang gets caught up in a bit of murder, as evidenced by the crime scene tape, body bag, bloody hands, bag of cash, flashing sirens and police officers seen in the promo, which was shared exclusively by Entertainment Weekly.

“It’s definitely ‘Archie,’ but a little darker, a little more complex and a little weirder than you might remember from the digest you bought at the supermarket,” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in an interview with EW at Comic Con in July. “We’re saying it’s a little bit like ‘Archie’ meets ‘Twin Peaks.’”

Tune in Jan. 26 at 9 p.m. ET on CW.
