Jake Tapper isnβt buying Kellyanne Conwayβs latest defense of Donald Trump.
Tapper on Tuesday called out the White House for accusing the media of underreporting terror attacks by playing footage of CNN reporters on the scene at those events. In response, Conway explained that the president wasnβt saying that every incident is minimized, but that covering major attacks is making the media βinuredβ to some of the less deadly events.
Say what?
βThatβs a lovely spin, but thatβs not what he was saying, Kellyanne,β Tapper said. βHe was saying the media does not cover these stories... itβs offensive given that CNN and other media organizations have reporters in danger right now in war zones covering ISIS.β
Tapper also pressed Conway on Trumpβs constant criticism of the media as βfake news.β
βAre we fake news, Kellyanne?β he asked her. βIs CNN fake news?β
βNo, I donβt think CNN is fake news,β Conway said. βI think there are some reports elsewhere, in print, on TV, on radio, in conversation that are not well-researched and are sometimes based on falseness.β
βHow about the presidentβs statements that are false?β Tapper said. βLike the murder rate is the highest itβs been in almost half a century? False. How about the fact that the media doesnβt report on terrorist attacks? False... Iβm talking about the president of the United States saying things that are not true, demonstrably not true. That is important.β
Trump began his term by lying about the size of his inauguration audience β a claim that he and his staffers have repeated over and over again.
