Former “General Hospital” cast member Antonio Sabato Jr., a Republican who supported Donald Trump’s campaign for president, is launching a mid-life career switch with a campaign for Congress.

The 45-year-old actor filed campaign documents with the Federal Election Commission on Monday for California’s 26th Congressional District seat, according to CNN.com. The incumbent is Rep. Julia Brownley (D).

GOP strategist Charles Moran, who is raising funds for Sabato’s campaign, confirmed the run. Sabato will point out to voters that he’s “a member of the majority party who has good relations with the Trump administration,” Moran told CNN.

Sabato, who also had a role on “Melrose Place,” has always been interested in politics and policy, but was inspired to run after speaking at the Republican National Convention last summer, according to the Los Angeles Times.

During the convention, Sabato falsely told ABC News that Barack Obama is “absolutely” a Muslim.

“We had a Muslim president for seven and a half years,” Sabato said then.

Sabato later claimed his acting career suffered because of his support for Trump.

“I’ve had fantastic directors who have said officially to my agents and managers they will never hire me again,” he told Variety.com. “They will never even see me for projects. That’s unfair. It’s just like communism.”

If elected, Sabato will focus on veteran’s issues and substance abuse, Moran told the Los Angeles Times.
