Happy Birthday Twitter

What's Your Reaction:

This has to be the sweetest of times for Twitter co-founders Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey. Sunday March 21st marks the fourth anniversary of the social networking, information service that has taken the world by storm. They continue to add features that enhance the experience, and they're quite confident about Twitter's lasting impact.

I am too.

Indeed, there isn't a day where Twitter isn't apart of the international conversation. I stumbled onto Twitter through another site back in January 2009. My main motivation for joining was to promote my then-newly created blog, and to connect with truly substantive people moving the world forward. Twitter, like no other site, has helped me to achieve this in ways I never dreamed of. From the shores of Daytona Beach to the skyscrapers of Dubai, I've connected with mentors, industry leaders, motivational speakers, business visionaries, dream merchants, wordsmiths, & serious go-getters.

Though I've only been on Twitter for the better part of one year, I'll be celebrating its birthday as well. Jack Dorsey's revelatory quote - "One could change the world with one hundred and forty characters" - has been proven right many times over. Twitter has been a bridge to amazing cultures, a platform for innovation, and an empowering vision of what it means to be a global citizen.

Happy birthday Twitter. May you continue to be the cutting-edge, thought-provoking, world-changing powerhouse that you've been for the last 4 years.

Hi Sean.
Thanks for the great article about Twitter.
As you know, I am a big fan and Twitter user too. I joined last year for the same reasons and have not been disappointed. Twitter has driven thousands of people to my blog, furthered my art and writing career and introduced me to interesting and wonderful people like you!
Twitter sure looks mature for a four-year-old...! lol

I really know nothing about twitter. What's the purpose of it?

Hi Dustee.

Twitter is a social networking site like Facebook. The purpose of it? Well, you can connect with other people, promote your products and services, etc. There are artists on Twitter who promote their galleries; explorers on Twitter who promore their global adventures; bloggers on Twitter who promote their posts.

But Twitter has also become a way to raise money and awareness for nonprofits and causes. In fact, if you scroll back up, please click on the hyper-linked words "a global citizen". That will take you to a great post by Jose Antonio Vargas, editor of the Huffingtonpost's Technology Section. That post gives you an idea of how social networking sites like Twitter brought people together in the aftermath of the Haitian Earthquake in January.

For a great understanding of Twitter and what it means to be a Tweeter, check out "Flipbooks and the Power of Twitter", the 1st post from my TwitterPowerhouses series --> http://bit.ly/5Oz0dF.

There's a great deal to learn about Twitter...and I guarantee you'll have fun learning. Thanks for your question.

This is certainly a great birthday for Twitter. In just four years, it has become one of the crown jewels of social networking. Let's keep it going! I want Twitter alive and kicking for the next 4 years and beyond.

I wonder: who is going to blow out the candles among the remaining Twitter co-founders: Jack, Ev or Biz? Hmmm?

Hopefully they had a big cake with 140 candles. Hopefully for the 5th birthday the Twitter co-founders can have a big, international affair. You know, a big celebration on each continent, and maybe a huge cake with 140 candles. I'm sure something bigger will be planned for next time. And I definitely want to be there.

I love this. Never knew about that quote from Twitter-co-founder Jack Dorsey. Very nicely put together. I like that you didn't join Twitter for the accumulation of "followers", but to promote your work, and to connect with great people. Trust me, that bit is not lost on the reader.

Great piece! And, yes, Happy Birthday Twitter!

Thank you Susan! That quote from Jack Dorsey is one of the most interesting aspects of Twitter's history. It's almost as if he knew what it would be come. I would love to have a one-on-one interview with him. He is quite the visionary

Thank you again.
