16 Health Experts To Check Out On Twitter

This is the latest post in our series, TwitterPowerhouses, which focuses on the contributions of people who've helped to expand, influence, and redefine how we view social networking.

As the texts and records of ancient societies show us, health and fitness have always been essential to the growth and development of humanity. Health and fitness can be achieved by being mindful of our bodies and surrounding ourselves with compassionate people who exude a positive flair for life. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Discovering our inner-strengths and developing our bodies, minds and spirits with the help of extraordinary people is the foundation of spectacular health.

The expertise of co-writer Barbara Ficarra has been particularly helpful to this post. A visionary thinker, health expert and media professional in high demand, she is well-versed on the history of health and fitness, and is consistently aware of the trends, discoveries and newsmakers in her field. Indeed, she knows the work of the 16 men and women profiled below.

Like Ficarra, they not only post their thoughts and perspectives, but they participate in the international, empowering conversation that Twitter provides to hundreds of millions. Anyone can sell books and DVDs about a new exercise routine or personal ideas about medical advances. What's different about these men and women? Truly, they excel because of how they push beyond the boundaries of creativity, and use social media to impact and enrich the lives and ambitions of their followers.

Thanks for this list. I am familiar with D. Joyner and of course Oz. I look forward to finding out more about the people highlighted. Out of 14 comments am I wrong in guessing that almost half are from people somehow connected to the list? This is actually my first time coming across this series, so I see that I've missed quite a lot. Perhaps you have already included people (or at least one person) from the mental health field or maybe there will be a list along those lines. I believe mental health is integral to one's overall health. I'm not on facebook or twitter--it takes up too much time to keep up with people (which is not good for my health). Thanks again!

I guess I'm the only naysayer. None of these, or, should I say, very few of them, impress me. I'm surprised and disappointed by this list.

Thanks for your comment. It is indeed your right to like "none" or "very few" of the people profiled. Throughout the entire 'Twitter Powerhouses Series' (17 posts so far), we have tried to profile people who are making an impact in their field. Not the "top, best and greatest", but just people elevating and advancing the social media conversation. I believe we have met that goal, and then some.

So, even if you dislike all of 91 people profiled in the series thus far, as well as the people I'll be profiling in the future with other huffpost writers, thanks for clicking on my work.

Have a fantastic, productive, and healthy 2011.

I never said that I dislike all 91 people. I don't even know who they are yet. That would be an awful lot of people to dislike, even for hateful, horrible me. :-) Never mind the people you plan to profile in the future.
I would have chosen some different people. That's all.
Thanks for the best wishes. Same to you. :-)

Awesome list, I love that you're highlighti¬ng health profession¬als who don't get as much coverage for their work and knowledge sharing on Twitter. We're so used to seeing us marketers, I will definitely be sharing this with my friends in the health industry and those just in need of good tips and advice! Fabulous job on this post!

Thank you so much. Your support of the entire series has been greatly appreciated. Health and fitness is indeed an important area. Once reluctant professionals in those areas are increasingly embracing social media. So I can't thank you enough for sharing this post with those you know. You rock!
