According to reports, one of the first acts of the Republican Congress will be to fire Doug Elmendorf, current director of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, because he won't use "dynamic scoring" for his economic projections. Dynamic scoring is the magical-mystery math Republicans have been pushing since they came up with supply-side "trickle-down" economics. It's based on the belief that cutting taxes unleashes economic growth and thereby produces additional government revenue. Supposedly the added revenue more than makes up for what's lost when Congress hands out the tax cuts. Dynamic scoring would make it easier to enact tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, because the tax cuts wouldn't look as if they increased the budget deficit.
The warning signs of impending trouble in Afghanistan are clear: the $57 billion U.S. investment in Afghanistan's security forces is at risk because the Afghans cannot supply, or resupply their troops, can't prevent their weapons and vehicles from breaking down and can't fix them when they do.
De Blasio has been exceptionally evenhanded in his respect for police while trying to help us grasp the perspectives of people of color. He has tried to be a true friend to the NYPD, in the sense of a friend who believes in you enough to be critical when you can be better.
Well we did it. Made it through another year. Women have had some good news and some bad news with a bit of the ridiculous thrown in. So let's review some items affecting the female sex both here and abroad that didn't make the front pages in 2014.
Bethlehem has always loomed large in our imagination. For generations, the feelings evoked by this town have been captured in multiple art forms, serving to inspire both believers and non-believers with its message of hope and the joyful promise of new life.
When friends and family come together to celebrate the New Year, the festivities usually include raising glasses for an uplifting toast. If delivering the toast falls to you, some advance preparation will help you create a memorable start to the celebration.
The goal is a high consumption economy that protects the planet while it enables economic security, leisure time and personal growth for people everywhere. For this to happen we need to change the definition of consumption.
It's the end of the year, a new year just days away, a time when traditionally, people make resolutions. But our brains are overloaded, our bodies are overweight and I just got the feeling that everyone thinks, the hell with it, why bother to change, it's too late, anyway. It's not.
There are many reasons I highly recommend not going to the Internet for answers, but the biggest one is that everybody's experience with cancer is different.
Monitor your sleep as a part of your weight-loss regimen. Examine your own relationships between amount and quality of sleep and food choices, timing, and energy levels. Give yourself the best opportunity to do well in your attempt to lose weight, and recognize that sleep should not be ignored.
Something big's going to happen in Florida next week, we just don't know what yet. The Supreme Court is going to examine multiple marriage cases in early January. And new polling shows support for marriage higher than ever.
It follows a teen boy who takes an unlocked pistol out of his mother's bureau drawer, slips it into his backpack, walks into his class at school and, when there are no other kids in the room, plops the gun down on the teacher's desk and says, "I don't feel safe with this at home." And that's it.
The perfect gluten-free alternative to the classic snack!
Even during the worst of the U.S.S.R. the square was more symbolic than threatening. For the most part no one went to the Kremlin to die. Very different, however, is Lubyanka, just a short walk up Teatralny Proezd past the Bentley and Maserati dealerships.
Saudi King Abdullah is adding an extra $21 billion to the Saudi Arabian education budget. Pearson is there -- already -- to dip into those billions.
Historically, the African American population of the United States has been the greatest victim of vigilante violence. In addition, because of the media, police, and political responses to the killings, it is more likely the murder of these officers will make the policing situation in minority communities more oppressive, not less.
The cost of building new conventional generators is astronomical. If you get a jump on this and find a way to make it profitable, fields of opportunity will open as other coal-fired plants shut down. And you just might blaze a trail toward a carbon-neutral future.
While food safety is (or should be) a concern at just about every restaurant or other establishment that serves food, sometimes things fall through the cracks, and people get sick.
In 2015, let's let go of snap judgements, assuming the worst intentions, and mistaking unkindness for coolness. And while we're at it, maybe we can also quit bringing our phones to restaurants and sleeping with them next to our heads.
If I were going to make a 10-best list, it would probably include films like Boyhood, The Imitation Game and Selma, among others that will be on everyone's list. But, as good as those films are, none of them are on my list of favorites.
The Supreme Court will decide shortly whether to review and decide a marriage equality case before its current term ends in June. Many are praying for this, eager to wrap up an issue long past the tipping point that folks are sick of discussing. But there is a more important reason the Court should act now.
By the sheer nature of how much time students spend in school, educators are the main people who can assist parents with that goal. More opportunities to exercise and have a healthy diet at school will be the most effective methods for eliminating obesity as we know it.
We all know a little sacrifice is necessary to keep a relationship strong. But where do you draw the line?
Jubilant Plaza employees added big red letters spelling out "Freedom Prevails" to their marquee, then took to the Internet to share the news. Or, rather, they would have taken to the Internet.
My parents were terrified that the same racism that they had endured would cause me the same tremendous pain and frustrating limitations as it had caused them. They wanted to protect me from the experiences of hate that they had lived.
The same clerics who stand to lose everything if the Muslim masses turn away from them took yet another cowardly and barbaric step to ensure they keep their masses captive -- either mentally, physically, morally, and spiritually.
Thank you, Congressman Waxman. Your district, your state and your country thank you for your exemplary service. It is said that words are dwarfs and deeds are giants -- which makes Henry Waxman the world's first 5'-5" super-giant.
At a well-publicized speech in Buffalo, New York on August 22, 2013, President Barack Obama announced that he would create a plan for sweeping reform of higher education. The details were sketchy, but the projected plan would institute a rating system of colleges and universities nationwide.
We have to change our standards, system, and community. We have to find a way to cut through all of these cultural traditions and values so that we can begin putting an emphasis on the right things that make a marriage strong.
The Middle East is one of the world's most strategically significant regions. Stunningly, perhaps, the region does not yet have in place the necessary institutions and mechanisms to discuss and manage, and to prevent and respond to crises. Strategic and visionary leadership is required to reverse the state of the region.
It's hardly the first time that some official or official source in North Korea has gotten caught with its racial dirty linen waving. The verbal war is the outcrop of the deep suspicion, distrust, antagonism, and confrontation that's characterized relations between the U.S. and North Korea for decades.
