Sex Trafficking in the United States: Children Across America are Unseen Victims

Posted: 01/23/11 09:12 PM ET

Julie*, a California girl-next-door, star volleyball player and award-winning concert pianist thought the boy who invited her to his home was her friend. But after he and four other classmates gang raped her, this naïve 15-year old blamed herself. Consumed with guilt, she told no one -- especially not her parents.

"I became suicidal, smoked weed and slept around," Julie says. "I went from the perfect angel to a little girl lost in the world of drugs and men."

The emotional trauma drove her from the people who cared about her. She dropped out of school, ran away, and became a real "ho", like the rap lyrics she and her so-called friends idolized. Alone and vulnerable, she was an easy mark for a sadistic pimp, Maurice MacFarland, a.k.a. "Genius," who followed the pimp "code book" to the letter. He began the grooming process by plying her with gifts, words of love and drugs. He then beat and raped her into submission before trafficking her to Washington D.C. where she was rented by the hour to powerful men with deep pockets. If she didn't earn $1,000 a day, he beat her viciously.

Eventually, they made it back to California where the two were arrested. Her luck changed when she was picked up by a detective who worked closely with Lois Lee, Ph.D., the founder of Children of the Night in Van Nuys, Calif., whose life work is rescuing teen prostitutes. Julie's long road to normalcy began while she was in Lee's capable hands. Though terrified, she agreed to testify against "Genius" who is currently serving a 77-year, eight-month sentence for sexually exploiting and trafficking a child.

A pioneer in rescuing America's sex slaves, Lee hit the streets long before law enforcement even recognized prostituted children. What began as a study in human sexuality for a Ph.D. dissertation became her life's work. For 27 years, she says she has been in the middle of a tornado.

Actually, it's more of a tsunami.

Julie is just one of the young girls Lee has rescued since she founded Children of the Night in 1979. Over the last 30 years, she has raised $40 million in private funds to provide shelter, an onsite school and specialized services needed to help these girls return to physical and mental health. Her hotline receives more than 10,000 calls a year from all over the country and many of the program's graduates -- including Julie -- have gone on to college and become lawyers, executives and educators.

In the beginning, Lee ran the organization from her small apartment, supporting victims age 11 to 17 through her financial aid, part-time teaching and research fees. A generous grant from the Playboy Foundation enabled her to buy food and turn her home into a hotline for girls (800-551-1300) caught in the sordid web of life on the street.

While child prostitution is an equal opportunity crime, Caucasian girls bring top dollar on the streets -- $60 to $300 for 15-minute to one-hour increments. Blondes with blue eyes known as "swans" command even more and in Minnesota, Native American girls are in high demand.

Contrary to the belief that the sexual exploitation of children only takes place in Third World countries, it occurs daily in the United States. A well-known trafficking highway leads down the Eastern seaboard, through Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Hawaii, Minneapolis and more. No city -- regardless the size -- is immune.

Trafficking minors for prostitution is the third highest money-maker for organized crime in the U.S. Only gun and drug sales are higher. Teens are recruited in arcades, malls, entertainment centers, tourist attractions, concerts and even schools.

The problem has become so enormous that it will take the combined efforts of law enforcement, non-profits and the faith community to stem the tide.

Lee assists other agencies around the country to develop programs similar to hers to rehabilitate prostituted teens who suffer from PTSD, Stockholm Syndrome (victims become sympathetic to their perpetrators), STDs, HIV-Aids, educational issues and psychological trauma.

Children of the Night has been in the fight longer than any other American organization. Others have followed, but more are needed to join forces and battle this crime against children.

Throw-away children are a product of the insensitivity that produces throw-away people, the homeless, the unemployed, the unhappy, the desperate, the neglected. The issue is more visible these days than it was, for example, during the Reagan Era when so many issues were quietly ignored, but it's a recurring theme that's been true for altogether too long.

What is at the root of this throw-away people mentality? I don't know but when I listen around, I hear political fanatics demanding tht the sick go without health care. I hear religious fanatics demanding that their particular demonized part of the public be marginalized or unemployed or worse. I hear socially timid people demanding their marriages be blessed as sacraments by the state. I hear sports fans trash-talking the other team and TV sports casters chuckling about how amusing it all is. I hear a general climate of disregard for the wellbeing of others. Throw-away children used as sex toys is not a surprise in this social climate. The surprise is that it is less visible than it might be.

How many of you raised your voice to ban the sex industry in America? As long sex industry will remain in America, this problem will continues.
Why don't we collectively protest to close entire sex industry in America?
If we can't control following things then this society would be more worst in future

1. Excessive freedom
2. Boy/girl friend culture(why don't parents take the responsibility to find out a life partner for their kids, like in India)
3. Free sex
4. Alcohol
5. Immoral education system
6. Undisciplined life style
7. Materialistic world
8. Marriage system
03:10 AM on 01/25/2011
Oh please, parents choosing a life partner like they do in India, really? If you fail to marry who they want, then they kill you.. It won't fly here... If that system is working so well over there, why does India and many Asian countries have the highest population of prostitutes in the entire world?

In the U.S., we need the industry to be regulated and highly taxed, where only consenting adults will qualify to be involved in prostitution. Also, people who are found preying on kids should receive very looooong jail sentences..a minimum of 25yrs without parole will certainly get the message out!

i think india and asian have the highest populations of many things simply because statistically speaking, it's impossible not too.
if america was 1 billion instead of 300 million, maybe the prostitution would be #1 on the organized crime list instead of #3.

Oh, and India is just so perfect. No, drugs , prostitution trade, corrupt gov., discrimination, child abuse, caste system, poverty and more, all because of a better controlled society? I have yet to see yours or any other "better" society treat each other with the respect we all deserve. The human species is fraught with the most horrible tendencies and in direct contrast the most caring desires.
Every culture (I'm sure someone will find an argument to this statement please?) since we have walked this earth, have enslaved, persecuted, practiced genocide and worse, for what? Power, Control, Wealth.
We or you have yet to evolve to the beings we can become. I should hope we do so or we may just repeat the worst of what we haven't learned of our past. And you advocate what, Control?, that makes me happy.
Become a better human being , that's a step in the right direction.

Democrats don't proclaim their moral superiority at every turn, nor are they in charge of Congress right now setting the priorities.

A lot to learn here. Society has to change a lot. In rest of the world like china and india kids at the age of 12-18 worried about their career and education, whereas here they worry about dating, boyfriends, girlfriends, and fall prey for them. I feel sorry for the girl, but the system has to change here. parents should turn their kids focus on to more education so that the kids they dont fall prey like this or else this is the end result or teen pregnancy or single mother or homeless. wake up parents..

Oh, and so much is perfect in your society. No rape, child porn, drugs, alchoholism, caste abuse, corporate or gov. corruption, graft, crime, war, hunger, homeless children on the street, child labor, rampant illiteracy, racism, bigotry, and on and on. I don't believe you or your society have any better answers. Work for the common good of all, not just your small opinions.

That is a perspective that is hard to deal with. Not really surprised though, our society is sick.

YES!!! I couldn't agree more...it can all be traced back to corporate greed...the destruction of the family at the hands of the greedy, never-satisfied oligarchs.

What I wonder about is why there's such a high demand for sex with teens and children. We live in a very sick society.

The problem is everywhere not only in the US, look to the Netherlands, Eastern Europe and tell me that things have gotten better. Children are being kidnapped daily and never found, so the problem is worldwide. Maybe we need to start doing what Sweden is doing, going after the clients and punishing them as well as the pimps.
06:25 PM on 01/24/2011
Great Point... Lets start making some noise, and drop a note to our reps. If we cannot deal with this, I wonder and pity the children in the third world, who in many cases are exploited by people in the first world.

Sex slaves should be rehabilitated through established brothels like in Netherlands and Mexico.

Why can not we train them in some skills that will provide a dignified living. Yeah! I do not believe sex trade is dignified.

This is very sad and unfortunate especially for the parents who children are involved in this despicable act.

But I wonder if the same passion expressed here would be used against MVT tv series "Skin"? The different bet MVT skin and sex trafficking is that MVT makes it normal on TV whereas sex traffickers do it in hidden.

I think they are both the same!

One of the first things that we need to tackle is not punishing the victims. That is where our legal system is out of line. Instead of going after the johns, pimps and clients it simply arrests and jails the children who are being pimped. When is our legal system going to see that this isn't their fault and that they didnt choose this "profession"?

yes, thank you. I made the same comment earlier. I like to see the supply and demand chain broken by eliminating the demand clients. We all need to walk around with a more alert eye when we see the many homeless youngsters in the streets, look at their surroundings and maybe you can call the police and stop something.

Why is that these kinds of articles often misuse the term "children"? Do they feel that the story is less shocking if they just say "teens" or "adolescents"?

Isn't, 'Sex Trafficking in the United States: Teens Across America are Unseen Victims', deplorable enough??

In my opinion it takes nothing away from the tragedy—furthermore, we aren't desensitized to the term 'child' when (God forbid) the victim really is a child.

I don't disagree. But an 11 year-old is not a 15 or 16 year-old.
