Troops fired into tens of thousands of rioting Somalis on Monday, killing two people in the latest eruption of violence over soaring food prices around the world.

Wielding thick sticks and hurling stones that smashed the windshields of several cars and buses, the rioters jammed the narrow streets of the Somali capital, screaming, "Down with those suffocating us!"

I give them a big high five. At least they have the guts to go into the streets and protest instead of sitting behind a computer complaining about everything. Power to the people.

The sorld's poor has no greater enemy than American "environmentalists." (sic)

algore whould be brought before the world court, tried & imprisoned; the sooner the better for the Somalians.

Ah another fool who has bought into the big lie.

The current Ethanol program doesn't use food stock it uses feed stock to create ethanol. The current high food prices can and should be directed to its true source, HIGH FUEL PRICES and BIG OIL. It cost more to ship food so it cost more.

Rice isn't being used to create ethanol so why is its cost increasing just as much as corn? Big oil may also be affecting the stock prices of corn, rice and other foods to cast a dark shadow on Ethanol for fuel. I mean how much money have they spent against Global Warming and what makes anyone think they wouldn't use the insane amounts of profit they have been making to keep their share of the pie?

So try to do some thinking and less blind reacting. The truth is oil isn't going to last forever and while we are trying to figure out hydrogen power there is going to be a gap between the two. So why not use what we have available to reduce our dependency on oil if we ran a E-55 to E-85 program that would save how many millions of gallons of gas and stretch the supply long enough to implement hydrogen fuel safely and effectively.

The current food shortage situation may be smoke and mirrors.

You obviously know little about agiculture. The corn used for ethanol is the same grain fed to livestock. Hence meat, dairy, eggs, etc. are up in price due to the rising feed prices. Also, acreage formerly used to grow food grains has been diverted to ethanol corn since it is now more profitable due to subsidies.
As for BIG OIL, most oil stock in this country is owned by the middle class. i.e., mutual funds (43%), pension funds (mostly union-27%), personal retirement funds (like IRA's-14%). Only 1.5% of stock is owned by corpoate officers and directors of oil companiea. The balance is owned by speculators. So much for the BIG OIL boogieman!

I'm not saying that Ethanol production is not contributing to food prices I'm saying it is not he only thing doing so.

If you think high fuel prices are not the main factor then you are the one who understands very little about alot of things. To harvest corn farmers use combines not Mexicans, the grain then has to be transported to a buyer, has to be distributed to its various other buyers, if it is shipped over seas it has to take a boat ride, all of this requires fuel and it ant cheap right now.

You guys want to dismiss the BIG OIL BOOGIEMAN but it is real and has been playing a major part in the current situation we are having. Despite who may or may not own stock in oil companies the ones making the big money are not the stock holders. Big oil has put millions into fighting against global warming theories with junk science and propaganda. The oil men are not going to give up their piece of the pie without a fight.

The best way to kill alcohol based fuel is to make it appear to be causing massive problems with food supplies. Food shortages are a cover to take the heat off of the fact that high fuel prices are causing the higher cost of food. While Ethanol is taking up some of the feed stock corn is no longer rotting in the fields and silos it is being used.

Grand work of the greedy Repubs.

Kempers, try expanding your knowledge base from your simpleton faux news core. And learn what "sic" means before your throw big (for you) words against the wall.

So they are protesting the Price of the food, which suggests that it is available, not in short supply. That would validate what I saw this weekend at my market, where the rice and other staples were also plentiful, though the price had risen considerably. I'll be very curious to see what the investigations into gaming of the Commodities Markets turns up in terms of manipulation and fraud. We've seen this happen with oil--this should come as no surprise. If there is money to be made off the suffering of the poor or middle classes, the international corporate monsters will be more than happy to do their part.

Good point "peaceandfreedom", we've also seen this kind of market manipulation when it comes to power as was witnessed by the California blackouts and brownouts.
