The New York Post's Michael Starr reports that Jodi Applegate, former MSNBC and NBC personality and veteran of local morning broadcasts across the country (including New York's "Good Day New York," where she currently anchors) is set to announce a shocking family secret on the air tomorrow:

Applegate's mother, Margaret, died in 1981 of breast cancer when Jodi was only 17. When she passed away, a family secret was supposed to have gone with her.

"In late 1963, she found herself pregnant and not married, which was a real scandal in those days, especially if you were Irish-Catholic," says Applegate, especially in Wheeling, W. Va.

"She hid her pregnancy, disappeared for several months and returned with a baby she said she'd gotten at an orphanage.

"She said, 'I'm going to keep her and adopt her' . . . It was a story that allowed her to live in that town and go to that church."

Applegate grew up believing she was adopted. Eventually, her mother married, but never had any more children.

Read the entire article, including how Jodi found out the truth and why she's going public, here at the New York Post website. Or, if you're not sure who Jodi Applegate is, watch her open this morning's "Good Day New York" broadcast below:

Applegate is also the anchor seen publicly scolding bike thief pranksters who pretended to be injured during an on-air demonstration here.

OK, this revelation has inspired me. It's time.

I am the love child of Ronald Reagan and Barbra Streisand.

Gosh, that feels good.

The people who report the news need to get over themselves and realize they ARE NOT the news, they are wannabe celebrities delivering tabloid tales similar to those trashy entertainment shows that society's bubbleheads watch and consider real news.

Ya'll ought be ashamed of yourself for sensationalizing this. What her mother did was, I am sure, done out of love, even if imperfect, and if you think about it, its a beautiful thing.

I say this as a person who never found out he was adopted until he was 18 years old. Really.

At least she isn't droning on and on about Reverend Wright.

Any distraction helps us play out the clock!

BHO '08!!

Is there no concept anymore of what "shocking" is, or are words simply bandied around just to pick up a few clicks?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:08 PM on 05/08/2008

Yes, this a heart-warming mother's day story. I must say, however, that HUffPo is crammed with these types of stories more and more. Have you become the Drudge Report now? It's getting harder to tell the difference.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:39 AM on 05/08/2008

Shocking is finding out your grandfather is your father and there is a world outside your room.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:29 AM on 05/08/2008

I'm sorry but this is not "shocking". Shocking is ...her father was a Harlem Globetrotter...a French poodle...a chocolate cupcake.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:25 AM on 05/08/2008

Am I alone in really liking FOX NEWS?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:01 AM on 05/08/2008

Yes. Lighthouse Watchman on a faraway island offshore alone.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:23 PM on 05/09/2008

...YEAH!!!

I think Jodi Applegate is a true talent. She was jerked around pretty badly by NBC, and it's a real shame that she doesn't currently have a network job. At the same time, she's not a hard news personality. I saw her many years ago when she was on the Phoenix early morning show, and if CBS wanted to up their Early Show ratings, they could do a lot worse. I would like to know Jodi, and what more could you ask from a TV personality.

As to the "big secret", it is to her and her family, and could be a good story. If she's upset and needs consolation, I'd be more than happy to have her cry on my shoulder....

I've got a much better story to tell. A friend of mine got his high school girlfriend pregnant back in 1968. The girl was sent away to have the baby and put it up for adoption and their young lives returned to normal (or as normal as teenage lives could be in the late 60s). The high school sweethearts graduated and went their separate ways.

In 1988, my friend was going through an awful divorce and in the throws of depression when out of the blue, his old girlfriend called him from California with some suprising news. She had spent the past several years tracking down the baby she had given up twenty years earlier and had located him. The long lost son had agreed to meet his birth parents so they arranged a reunion.

They met up with the son at his home in Colorado and it was a joyful event. The son was soon to have a child of his own, making my 37-year-old friend a grandfather. It was a real shot in the arm for him.

Several weeks later, my friend heard from the old girlfriend once more. She was pregnant again with his child. He asked her to marry him and start a family. She said yes.

We packed all of his things in a U-Haul and drove him across the country to his new home and his new life on the West Coast. Amazing what life can throw at you.

Oh my goodness! Draw the blinds! Hide the children!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:47 PM on 05/07/2008

And this is news because...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:06 PM on 05/07/2008

Who is this lady and why should we care that she is not adopted?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:35 PM on 05/07/2008

and the world is supposed to care WHY???

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:53 PM on 05/07/2008

Where's the shocking part?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:39 PM on 05/07/2008

Today's TV journalists haven't cut their teeth on the REAL THING YET...Not realizing that they shouldn't become the story but be the objective messenger who BRINGS the story...But isn't that the corporate game today -- blowing one's own horn. Why so often do the Networks, especially NBC and ABC, run upstairs to find a Fill-In guest for their nightly talk shows ? Because it's not only self-serving and props up the Stockholder's Bottom Line, but it's just Practical to a show's producer. Why spend the time trying to book some abstract Guest when you can call upstairs at Rockefeller Center and get Tina Fey to come down and talk about her new show...Don't get me wrong, I really like Tina Fey...

Even though Jodie Applegate may have momentarily slowed down her career by releasing this recent story about her childhood, perhaps for her, but not necessarily the rest of us, will be set Free by the Truth. Jesus was alluding to it quite heavily in John 8:31-32 but in his case he was saying He IS The TRUTH...Anyway, my comment was all typed up and brilliant yesterday but the library timer got me. Oh, well, now is that NEWS ? I seriously Doubt It.

Damn that fox news channel has all the radicals.... Extreme man! Pregnant before marriage, holy guacamole, what is this, freaky-hell-time in America. She's gotta be fired, that bastard.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:56 PM on 05/07/2008

i just am baffled at how all the women on fox have the same hair do. did they all go to stepford university? if so, are they all programmed to think and talk alike?

applehead

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:41 PM on 05/07/2008

Yawn... sooo shocking.

I'll tell you what's really shocking, is somebody who would stoop so low as to use their DEAD Mother's secrets too pull a ratings/publicity stunt.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:30 AM on 05/07/2008

Um... That the Catholic Church would in 1963 publicly shun a pregnant woman because she wasn't married is not shocking. This isn't news.

Why is this on huffpost?

Oh! Oh! I know!!! Jodi's on the Tee-Vee!!! She's a real celebrity!!! Yes! ANYTHING about a Celebrity On The Tee-Vee.. Well Golly! We just gotta know 'bout that!

"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more..."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:16 AM on 05/07/2008

On air personality.

I agree. Too much celebrity pablum over here on Huff Post.

And you know. I would have no idea who Brittany, or Paris were if they were not featured on Olberman's Countdown every night.

Love Huff Post and Kieth. But cut out the crap.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:23 PM on 05/07/2008

Media naval-gazing, perhaps. I don't think Ms. Applegate, as talented as she may be, rises to the level of "celebrity".

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:22 AM on 05/08/2008

Bravo.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:33 AM on 05/07/2008

No kidding. I choose not to kill more brain cells than necessary so I don't watch American Idol. I hate it when Keith talks covers it and brings on that weird "American Idol Princess" lady to talk about it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:55 PM on 05/07/2008

So Jodi Applegate was born out of wedlock. Why does THAT sound redundant?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:30 AM on 05/07/2008

haha, thats right, when I was using the "B" word every time I disgustingly tuned in,I was thinking of the other one ;)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:59 PM on 05/07/2008

Yawn.

On the other hand if the Family priest or Bishop is the father ... now THAT would be interesting. Or maybe she can call Granpappy just plain old Pappy. Or if the principal of her mom's school.

I mean if she is going to come up with made up "shocking" news, then at least she could have borrowed something from the Springer show.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:28 AM on 05/07/2008

Um, really, who cares?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:07 AM on 05/07/2008

This is the most desperate attempt to get publicity for a dying career I have ever seen.
Dragging her mother through the mud so she can get publicity. She has no shame.
