Scarlett Johansson Shows Off Engagement Ring (PHOTOS)

Scarlett Johansson showed off a new sparkler at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala Monday night, hours after she confirmed her engagement to fellow actor Ryan Reynolds. She and Reynolds have been together for just over a year.

Johansson accompanied designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, whose Dolce & Gabbana label she wore. Reynolds was not with her.

One: note that Miss Scarlett is happy, and happily displays her diamond, a diamond released from a mine where workers are abused, the market manipulated, the game of life and death for pretty little things played for keeps. The blood and sweat of humanity is easily washed from the hard, glass facets of this corrupted bauble, though, so as like unto J-Lo pimping fur products, I fear that Miss Scarlett either isn't aware that her wedding talisman is tainted with a wholly insidious history, or if aware is not suitably moved to refrain from supporting this foul industry. I wonder if she will think about these things, or be content with mere surfaces.

Two: perhaps Miss Scarlett would be so kind as to ask Ryan if he still enjoys throwing rocks at cats. I saw him throw rocks at a very large (very large indeed--maybe twenty-five pounds or so) cat at a birthday party he and Alanis attended. When asked about why he was doing that he laughed--whether because he had been caught or whether he was embarrassed only Ryan would know. Indeed, I am not a fan of people who abuse animals for entertainment. I hope Ryan has either grown up or out of his more sadistic tendencies.

I am from Sierra Leone, the place the movie blood diamond was based on. I always laugh when I see these people talk about going to africa to do whatever (volunteer I guess) and then turn around and shop for diamonds.

As for the diamonds? You could never persuade me to buy one with all the blood attached to them. The PR nonsense about diamonds that are mined "humanely" is just that; UTTER CRAP.

Besides as 60 Minutes pointed out, if memory serves me correctly, DeBeers has MILLIONS of diamonds they hold back in order to keep the price up. They showed a long hallway style vault and it was just nothing but millions of diamonds.

That if the truth were known, diamonds are actually pretty common. There are so many other gemstones that are genuinely rare and valuable AND don't have so much blood on them.

We are a society too easily distracted by bright shiny objects that we have been told are very very valuable.

BUT back on topic.

She's a babe and he is one lucky bastard. AND ain't nothin' wrong with showing off those puppies of hers and such wonderful looking puppies they are!!
