Fox News talking-heads Chris Wallace and Karl Rove, have been dispensing their own nuggets of conventional wisdom tonight. Rove analyzed Senator Barack Obama's speech in North Carolina, giving it mainly positive reviews. But he added a caution:

ROVE: And then I think he did something that's a little bit dangerous, he promised a new kind of politics that was going to be positive and optimistic, and he said that the evidence of it would be that he would be the only one in the race telling the truth. Which was a very subtle jab but nevertheless a dangerous jab at John McCain. You cannot promise one thing and then turn around and do the opposite.

And then, with these ideas of truth-telling and danger and promising one thing only to do the opposite hanging in the air, Chris Wallace framed his next question thusly: "If you were advising John McCain..." If? Say it with me now: Karl Rove IS advising John McCain - a fact Fox has steadfastly pretended isn't true for ninety-one days and counting!

Pretending comes easily to Chris Wallace. He's been pretending to be a journalist for years.
