Hillary canceled her interviews with the morning talk shows and is hunkering down in the war room reassessing the new situation.

The election did several things for the Obama campaign:

1). It defeated the myth that Barack Obama is an "elitist" because he received 36 percent of the white working-class vote in North Carolina and an impressive tally among white voters in Indiana.

2). The fact that 93 percent of African-American voters in North Carolina cast their ballots for Obama repudiates any notion that his association with Reverend Jeremiah Wright casts a pall over his judgment in the eyes a black electorate steeped in the traditions of the black church. And these are voters who are also steeped in the history of the civil rights movement. (Remember, it was in Greensboro where the lunch counter sit-ins ignited the civil rights and black student movements.)

Obama won North Carolina 56 to 41 percent.

3). In Indiana, a traditional blue-collar state that is at least 85 percent white with a strongly conservative bent Obama has fought Hillary Clinton to a standstill. He has denied her the "game changer" victory that she needed. Indiana surprised everybody by showing that neither Reverend Wright nor Hillary's gas tax "holiday" had any real traction with voters.

4). Also in Indiana, it is poignant that Gary is the city that really came through for Obama since it played a crucial role in paving the way for advancing modern African-American urban politics. It's the same city that elected Mayor Richard Hatcher (a strong ally of Robert F. Kennedy in 1968), and the first black mayor of big city, and also hosted the "Gary Convention" in 1972, which catapulted the movement for black empowerment. Obama is standing on the shoulders of a powerful history in Indiana.

On February 20, 2008, in a blog titled: "It's Over," we wrote:

Barack Obama is going to be the Democratic Party's nominee for president of the United States in 2008. His strategy must now fully engage John McCain and the record of Republican misrule he represents. He must not allow Hillary to distract him with her desperate negative attacks. Obama is defending himself on two fronts. Hillary should bow out gracefully after March 4th for the health of the party. It's time for Democrats to focus on the general election.

Ditto that sentiment tonight -- better late than never.

(Special thanks to my friend and colleague Dr. Stan Oden for collaborating on this one as with the February 20th piece.)

Lets just hope that HRC finds it within her self interest to fully support the Obama candidacy, once she figures out that her other alternative math schemes aren't really going to work. Too often our Democratic nominees don't get the support they should, because someone is angling to run for that office themselves.

LOL I really hope that you are right, but it's not over until Hillary say it is over.

I believe that Obama done a great job with his victories last night. The main stream media was against and I really believe they went all out to bring him down in the last month but it didn't work. People any way I am so sick as politics as usual and the pandering, I hope we are to the point of turning a new page.

Cruel Intentions
...If destroying the Democratic Party is not ominous enough, there is a more alarming reason for staying in the race¦money. As the saying goes, "money is the root of all evil". Is there anything more evil than this¦Senator Clinton has already loaned herself $5 million and now she has loaned herself another $6 million. Clinton needs to stay in the race to convince people to donate to her campaign so she could pay back the loans with their money, not hers. The same hard working people she claims she"s "championing" for, is the same people she plans on robbing. Heck why pay back the loans with the Clinton"s $100 million net worth, when you could pay it back with money from people you duped into believing you still have a chance to win...

(while at it, you really need to question just WHY ALL CLINTON RECORDS, including past WH yeras and CURRENT CLINTON FOUNDATION DONORS HAVE REMAINED OFF LIMITS...there are indeed SERIOUS issues that would have led to her defeat come November, make no delusional mistake about it !!!)

LOL, it IS "white voters" WITH sense that will seize the OPPORTUNITY and indeed vote OBAMA by showing they are NOT hobbled by FEAR of being "displaced" in the heirarchy of the grander scheme of ALL things due to THEIR "minority" status !!! Perhaps tis fear of "retribution, that what HAS gone around will come back to BITE some who have been so steeped in presumptive, arrogance of thinking/believing the color of ones skin DETERMINED their content and potential and ability !!!
There are indeed MANY MORE "whites" , who will seize this opportunity to FULFILL America's purported basic principle that claims ALL CREATED EQUAL and in Obama , WE have the chance to PROVE WE MEAN WHAT WE SAY !!!
(this old white woman is sighing--gratefully that perhaps OUR generation has finally , truly matured and come to grips and for the first time in a very long time, finding PRIDE in being an American !!!)

Hey everybody...I think this 112985 guy might be right. I mean did they ever find Hitler's body? Obama could be Hitler you know!! And when was Hillary born? Oh yeah...1947 in Rosewell, New Mexico right? See??!?! She's a space alien!

Think about it...have you ever seen Hitler and Obama in the same room together? NO? See? Obama = Hitler!!!

Have you ever seen a space alien in the same room with Clinton? NO? See?!?!?! Clinton = Space alien!!!

This is why the media is liberally biased...cause they want to resurrect Hitler and let space aliens take over the country!!!!

[Sorry folks, the only answer to abject ridiculousness is more ridiculousness. You will gain no traction through intelligent discourse and appeal with someone so willfully ignorant to reality. Granted, nothing is actually achieved with more absurdity but it can at least be fun!]

Music to my ears, Joseph Palermo!

I'm especially pleased that you mentioned the white vote as part of Barack's winning formula. There were thousands of whites campaigning tirelessly here in NC, and I personally have really enjoyed being part of something that has brought blacks and whites into closer community.

It looks to me like education is the dividing line more than race. And I thought that the Obamas- especially Michelle Obama- hit the right note when they spoke about opportunities for our kids. Even the worst sort of redneck white here still wants a better life for their kids.

Is this a great country or what?

On the other hand, the last time a Demo won in November
in NC was when Jimmy Carter beat Gerry Ford in 1976.

Hillary Clinton the most well connected elitist possible has been beaten by a much better candidate and her campaign has been shameful to say the least. Go back one year and tell me how many people would have predicted that she would lose to this young african american senator. We have learned during this campaign how little value she places on the truth and how right wing she really is and I hope that she is dismissed as a possible candidate for vice president as she is not qualified to be president.

CNN reported that all districts of Lake County, IN reported their results just an hour and a half after polls closed at 6:oopm. Mayor Tom McDermott of Hammon, IN said he suspected impropriety in the vote count by Gary, IN mayor Rudy Clay a hard core Obama supporter. It seems very unlikely to be that Clinton did worse in the actual vote count than she did in the polls. That hasn't been the trend. I think that there was foul play in Gary Indiana. Closing polls at 6:00pm is discriminating to working class people and holding out vote counts for five hours until you "know what they need" as mayor Rudy Clay said to CNN's Obama supporter is a little more than suspicious.

The Hammon mayor came off posturing with the gabfest of insinuating "mischief" where NONE was proven to happen and SO TYPICAL CLINTONIAN that TG the votes were registered as they were. Now would like that same Mayor to addres the CROSSOVER Goperites that voted for what reason FOR Hillary....as even they admitted in exit pols that come Novemeber , they would indeed support THEIR GOP candidate. Am amongst those that are exhausted at the contemptuous nature of the CLintonians, always whining that OTHERS are not playing fair when they themselves are incorrigible in their attempt to FORCE the Clintons on ALL the rest of us !! Many DO remember the Clinton reign and acknowledge that in comparison to the current Bushler regime, damnably better times but we ALSO REMEMBER/ HAVE NOTED, the Clintons too FAILED IN TOO MANY RESPECTS and sought their OWN enhancement above the TRUE GREATER COMMON GOOD OF ALL !!!
To the Clinton core women supporters, DO AN HONEST ASSESSMENT---she IS not THE BEST CHOICE and but SYMBOLIC to fem cause and THAT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH IN THESE VERY CRITICAL TIMES...Her INCONCISTANCIES thru out her campaign where she has FLIPPED AND FLOPPED ABOUT various issues IS GLARING !!! GET A GRIP and help take this nation TRULY FORWARD and realize that indeed there will be a fem candidate in the future that WILL embody what is needed and ACTUALLY BE CAPABLE OF DELIVERING and Hillary is NOT THE ONE TO DO SO !!

Most of the late vote out of Lake County came from Crown Point and Merriville. The southern party of the county that went to Hillary. Gary's results were the first to come out of Lake County. Get your facts straight.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:50 AM on 05/07/2008

Mayor McDermott never said any such thing about Rudy Clay. And Gary was the first city in Lake County to report to the MSM.

And where do you get this line about closing polls at 6pm? Most of IN closed polls at 7pm EDT, with 12 counties that are in Central time zone closed at 8pm EDT which is 7pm CDT.

If you are going to whine about losing at least whine about something truthful.

We've all known it was over (without cheating) for such a long time. It has just been depressing to see how many people were going along with the constant moving of the goal post. It has been disheartening to see how many people buy into that.

It has been difficult to get through to anti-Obama people. Communicate that they are reacting to a perception that is not true. That Obama really is who he says he is. Anytime you promote that idea someone is quick to jump in and say how delusional you are. The number of people who don't know how to be positive, or are in denial about some preconceived notions is astounding.

Maybe this gives everyone enough time to get a grip on reality.

Thanks Joseph. As always, the article is informative and envigorating. Obama now needs to engage McCain and the Republican Machine. In fact, Obama did not only fight Hillary to a standstill in Indiana, he stopped cold, the Limbaugh so-called operation chaos. Had Limbaugh not been involved, Obama would have mauled Hillary in Indiana as well. Thank you Hoosiers. Thank You North Carolina.

You were one of the first (if not the first) poster on this site to declare it was over with that Feb 20 piece, which I remember well. The power of those consecutive victories, the 50-state strategy, and, most important, the final pledged delegate lead which essentially became inevitable at that time was there for all to see, but many in the media and in the Clinton camp either could not or would not see it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:04 AM on 05/07/2008

what an idiot. Since that time both camps have pursued their goals. They're within 2% of each other in popular and delegate votes. It was premature then, and still premature.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:43 AM on 05/07/2008

Obama is ahead 6% in the voted (pledged) delegates. If you are going to call people idiots, you might want to learn how to do math first.
