NBC Planning 24-Hour News Channel For New York Region

NBC Universal announced on Wednesday plans to start a 24-hour local cable news channel similar to New York 1. It will de-emphasize the identity of NBC's flagship station, WNBC, Channel 4, rechristening it a "content center" and making it one part of a larger media presence.

The new channel will provide the first 24-hour local news coverage of the New York region, including New Jersey and Connecticut.

The existing NY1 news channel is unavailable to Directv, as it is owned by the cable companies.

Does anyone know if this new NBC NY News Channel will be available to Directv or to the Dish Network?

This is simply the first step toward Feb 2009, when analog TV will become a thing of the past. Since all TV will be digital, there's no need to keep an expensive broadcast station open when digital must carry will allow multiple lower cost cable channels to proliferate. Also, locals aren't bringing in the cash like they used to.

The local station as we knew it will become a thing of the past.

Grocery stores have gotten way too damn big. Entering them is like going on a Bataan death march. Now, Cable news is getting way too self involved and repetitious. Too much of too many things is just so much bullshit. Also, regarding covering the news in Connecticut, I am ROTFLMAO.

That's just what this country needs. Another cable news channel to give a bunch of pundits more air time. Now that the primary is more or less locked up I have vowed to watch as little news as possible until election day. FOX, CNN & MSNB are a huge joke.
