UPDATE: Howard Dean has released the following statement:

"What is John McCain trying to hide? Throughout this campaign, he has acted like his own calls for openness and accountability apply to everyone but himself. Now he thinks he can bring that same double standard to the White House. Whether he is skirting the FEC, withholding his tax returns, or stocking his campaign with the same Washington lobbyists he attacks on the campaign trail, John McCain is showing that he doesn't respect the voters enough to be honest with them. John McCain may not like it, but the American people have a right to know about the well documented links between his political career and the McCains' business ventures. John McCain's refusal to meet the standard of every other candidate seeking the office is one more reason he's the wrong choice for America's future."

Last Sunday, the New York Times editorial board knocked the McCain campaign for not releasing various records, among them Cindy McCain's tax returns:

The portrait of Mr. McCain's finances is particularly skimpy because his wife, Cindy McCain, has chosen not to make her separate tax returns available. Mrs. McCain, the daughter of a multimillionaire Anheuser-Busch distributor, is not the candidate, but the need to gain public trust and to air potential conflicts of interest is vital. Four years ago, we urged Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wealthy wife of the 2004 Democratic nominee, to release her tax returns.

There is no question that Mr. McCain benefits from his wife's money, including his low-cost use during the campaign of a corporate jet owned by a company headed by Mrs. McCain.

But this morning on NBC's Today show, Cindy McCain declared that she will never release her tax returns -- not during the presidential campaign, and not even if she becomes first lady. "I'm not the candidate," she said.

Watch it (around 2:20 mark):

Doesn't matter ... we don't need to know her tax returns because we will never be paying taxes for her side of the bed in the White House... not his either !

I'll make you a deal:

You can keep bringing up this non-issue, I'll keep bringing up Obama's 20 year relationship with right racist Rev. Wright.

Q: Why did the Republican have to drink a hot pepsi?
A: Because he couldn't fit any ice into the bottle.

I am pretty sure that had Theresa Heinz Kerry or Hillary Rodham Clinton refused to show their finances when their husbands ran for office the Republicans would have made it into the most devious duplicity they could imagine. In all honesty a married couple is a package. I don't see how Cindy can keep all her secrets to herself and it will start to gain traction as people wonder "well why WON'T she release them?" is she hiding something? Are they hiding something?

>> is she hiding something?

Yes. Her age.

But Busch IV, a longtime party boy who volunteers that he particularly enjoyed the brewery job "because we got to go to the tasting room every afternoon and drink beer," has endured years of public speculation about his suitability for leadership. He was involved--the circumstances are murky--in a car accident that left a female companion dead in 1983 when he was an undergrad at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

This is from Forbes. The "female companion" was a hooker. Busch was out of town the next day. Back to St. Louis. Money changed hands.

People need to understand McCain's back ground and the nature of the beverage industry in Arizona. Cindy has more money than god and saw what happened to Heinz. She is no fool.

Arizona is flush with mob. Yeah, those guys. As in the inspiration for Vito Corleone, etc.
Liquor licenses boys and girls. The mob. Cindy's family.

McCain, like former Governor Crook Symington, is a carpet bagger who chose Arizona for his Senate run. Why?

Connect the dots. You do NOT want this man in the White House.

I am no longer a McCain supporter, but his wife's money is her business. She was wealthy before she met him, and has nothing to do with whether he should be President or not. Can we please stick to the issues and elect whomever is going to fix this mess we're in?

She should fess up. According the the 'ol saying, they are "one flesh" so to speak, and I think we have the right to see the tax returns of the woman who is (presumably) sharing the bed of someone shooting to be the leader of the free world.

I do not see this going away anytime soon.

In 2004, the Republicans tormented Kerry's wife for not releasing her returns to the extend that the poor lady had to be forced to release them.

Now that the tables are turned, I expect the DNC and the 527 to go after her & McCain for this flap.

I agree - I will vote for the Democratic nominee regardless and would never vote for McCain, but I really do think her finances are her business. They have filed their returns "married filing seperately" and I don't think digging through her tax returns is going to tell us anything that would be relevant to McCain's ability or character. If they had filed joint returns I would feel differently. Must we know every little private detail about a candidate and his family relevant or not?

Perhaps Mrs McMarbles doesn't want to reveal how much she spent, and subsequently deducted from taxes, on Johnnie's private psychiatric care. Once marbles are misplaced it takes a fortune to recover them using PHD marble finders. It would be a bunch of $$.

Well, the Repugnicants and various news outlets and pundits hounded Teresa Heinz Kerry to release her taxes. After some time, she release partial records. Talking heads "made" it damage Kerry's campaign. Where is the outcry this time? Seems pretty quiet; not a peep. Double standard anyone?

I believe, from looking at him, that he's hiding being a wife beater. I truly, honestly, think he beats Cindy. I've lived with an abuser, I've been physically and emotially beaten. I see it in Cindy, too. She just says what Johnnie boy tells her. It's obvious to me, bu then I had twenty years with an abuser..that's just my opinion.

JOHN MCCAIN, WARTS AND ALL
http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/cin_WARTS%20AND%20ALL.htm

"McCain dumped his first wife after she had been disabled in an auto accident. Although this woman had worked tirelessly to get him released from captivity, he did not hesitate to betray her with other women upon finding her crippled when he returned home. In fact, McCain has racked up quite a reputation as a womanizer. This time he was determined to do it right. Since he had no fortune of his own, he acquired one through his second marriage. Sampley writes that the senator's net worth is "possibly as much as $1.2 million or more, excluding personal residences . . . McCain listed Cindy as the source of most of his assets. . ." According to the Phoenix Gazette of May 19, 1987, "the bulk of McCain's assets consisted of stock in the Glendale firms -- Hensley & Co., a beer distributorship headed by his father-in-law; Western Leasing Co., which leases trucks and equipment; and Eagle Enterprises, which invests in real estate and stock."

In fact, the senator married the daughter of one of the richest men in Arizona. It seems that McCain got more than just a wife in the bargain, he married into a family that already had quite a reputation in that state. Since family ties are always somewhat convoluted and difficult to track, I have prepared a chart to assist the reader in following the narrative."

If Cindy was to release her taxes, it might possibly tie her into connections her deceased father has with the murder of an Arizona Republic reporter named Don Bolles, whom Matt Welch did some pieces on. It seems her father and his brother and the beer distributor have a rather strange connection to a bombing. The car of the reporter is on display at the Newseum.

Cindy McCain needs to be made to explain her father's connection to organized crime in Arizona.

They claim his face lift, medication for Alzheimer medication, his" Depends " diapers, and the cost of all his other medical and mental treatments and aids on her taxes. I do respect the elderly, as I am quickly approaching that time myself, but you have to admit, with age comes mental and physical problems. A couple great examples are Reagan, and more recently , Rumsfeild. Now there is a pair that should be poster children for universal mental health for the elderly.

Why should she release her taxes? I admire her for sticking to her principles and she has been consistent abou it.

How about the Obama's fully disclosing their real estate dealings with Tony Rezko? This is far more relevant then Cindy McCain's taxes.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:36 PM on 05/09/2008

LOL, how about the Clintons explaining their financial ties to the Rezko Three who are on trial? That's the money trail that brings Bill and Hill closer than Obama. Bet you thought no one was reading?

never happen. YOu know rethuglicans are proud of any illegal and corrupt actions as long as it yields them huge profits. The more he can hide, the more rethugs and neo cons will think he is one of them. They love that. Now if they just have some video of him beating the poor with baseball bats and stealing their pocket change, he would reach god status amongst the GOP.

Hiding, not much. Look at the McCain's senate financial disclosure. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/congress/fin_dis/2006/m000303.pdf

Can you offer any proof on either of these statements? I find it real hard to believe Obama has more lobbyists on staff than McCain. Proof??

Oh well the only way to pay her and McSame back it to vote for his opponent in November.

She's wealthy and not half bad-looking. Why did she marry McCain? Was the White House part of the pre-nups?

She reminds me of those blond headed kids in that horror flick, especially with those eyes.

It's obvious she's got tons of money and property otherwise they wouldn't be so worried about this.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:43 PM on 05/09/2008

It's true, she's not running for President, but she is running for First Lady, the property she owns and the money she invests could present a conflict of interest should her husband actually achieve the presidency. The era of "the little woman" filing her taxes with her husband and not having a life, career and capital of her own are long gone. She will sleep with the most powerful man in the country (if he's elected), she should come clean with her financial transactions.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:41 PM on 05/09/2008

She is not "running" for anything. She just happens to be married to someone who is. I hate the repubes, but on this one, I'm on her side. Just as I think Bill Clinton and Michelle Obama should have been left alone, I feel the same way about her. Having said that. If I were the one worth 100 million and he called me a c***, his flat, saggy a** and even saggier b**** would have been out the door a long time ago!!!

Does Mccain really want to play the association game?
http://www.kffl.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4038327

"Cindy (Hensley) McCain"s father had been sent to jail when fifty-two of the employees of Quiq Marley were convicted of running afoul of federal liquor laws. When Hensley emerged from the slammer (some think for "taking the fall" for Marley), Marley rewarded him with a Budweiser distributorship which is now worth $200+ million, (even though Hensley was prohibited from working in the liquor industry for the remainder of his days). As an only child, Cindy (and, now, John) McCain will inherit this fortune. Thus, John McCain got his start in politics through the powerful political machine run by aforementioned Kemper Marley."
