When a bipartisan Congressional committee issues a report on the threat of domestic terrorist violence during an election year, you can be sure that the centrist establishment is worried about the popular backlash against government repression and the threat to civil liberties.

That's nothing new.

Scholar William W. Keller argues that in times of wide-spread social unrest and tensions, some liberals retreat from their oversight function as protectors of civil liberties and allow authoritarian methods to be implemented in order to restore order and defend the state. Right now in Washington, DC, civil liberties activists have built a coalition that spans the political spectrum from left to right. This coalition recently managed to block legislation titled the "Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act." It was, as detailed here, lousy legislation and deserved to be squashed.

Many voters do not support the war in Iraq and are suspicious of Bush administration demands for even more erosions of civil liberties and Constitutional rights. This scares the bipartisan status quo brigade, and centrist Republicans and Democrats now rally behind the power of the state. Dissidents on the left and right already are all potential suspects in the "War on Terrorism." Who better to pick as the main target for the New Witch Hunt than Muslims in America? Is there a more vulnerable community for a new campaign based on fear?

So now comes a "series of reports by the Majority and Minority staff of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs...on the threat of homegrown terrorism inspired by violent Islamist extremism." The first report, "Violent Islamist Extremism, The Internet, and the Homegrown Terrorist Threat," (PDF) was published today, 8 May 2008.

What's really amazing, is that this travesty of a "majority and minority" report is not even really "bipartisan." The committee authors include Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, the ranking Republican, and Committee Chairmen Joseph Lieberman, the Connecticut independent who has effectively lent himself to the McCain campaign for the last few months.

The ACLU has issued a press release: "ACLU Skeptical of Senate Report on 'Homegrown' Terrorism," and a broad civil liberties coalition signed a letter of protest that was actually issued the day before the report was made public.

Online, there has been almost no comment since the report was issued, hours ago, but it's easy to imagine what the Republican spin doctors and neo-McCarthyites are already whipping up in order to attack Democrats in this election cycle as soft on terrorism. The blogosphere will soon pulsate with their purple prose. This series of reports is a readymade script for the Swift Boating of the Democratic Presidential nominee and a bludgeon with which to push all of the candidates-- Democratic and Republican-- into a corner where they will accept more government repression as the price for being elected.

I will be posting more details about the New Witch Hunt and how it intersects with election 2008 over the next few days. Tomorrow, the story of Debbie Almontaser, hounded out of a job as a school principal by bigoted fanatics.

While a certain segment of the population is easily frightened by this Islamofacism stuff still, after seven years of "all hat no cattle" on terror threats and Iraq threats, many people look on it skeptically. I'm thinking enough of the American people have seen through this crap by now.

The people in Connecticut who voted for LIEberman screwed over America and our troops for 100 years. The country is broke and the dollar is a global joke. We cannot afford another war with Iran. Who's gonna fund it? Iran? Venezuela? The Saudis or Russians? We already owe China over a $$$$ trillion. Give Iraq to China and call it even.

Also, Lieberman is already working with the GOP to bring down Obama. The recent Hamas smear?? Or this new one?

Dirty Joe Flashback:

Lamont's opinions regarding Israel's recent military campaign in Lebanon have been criticised. Hartford Courant columnist Kevin Rennie wrote on August 13: Lamont's is a frightening point of view that ignores decades of determination by Islamic terrorists to kill Jews. The means have become more lethal and sophisticated, but there is nothing new in the purpose. To blame George W. Bush for the missiles flying from southern Lebanon into northern Israeli towns betrays a malignant partisanship by Lamont that ought to alarm voters on most spots of the political spectrum"

Don't forget to vote.

for too long the Democrats have shilled for israel...howelse could lieberman end up on the Democratic veep ticket in 2000 and just as easily back repugs OPENLY AND NOTORIOUSLY in 08?
The zionists are WAY too powerful considering their numbers............they absolutely need to be sent to the wood shed.

Before anyone passes off his sins on Israel, or sends Zionists to the wood shed, perhaps he will seek wisdom on these subjects. For starts, he may respect the conventional capitalization due sovereign states and political parties.
Even Hillary "obliterate Iran" Clinton Democrats deserve that status.

Lieberman is not a Democrat, has never been a Democrat and never will be a Democrat. The Democratic State officials here in CT dissed the real winner, Lamont. They, along with 'entitled' Democrats, joined with crossover Republicans to insure that Lamont would not win. Well, Joe won and look what you got. Every last CT voter who wasted their vote on Joe should be ashamed. Perhaps they can say they were blinded by the light, mesmerized by Joe's 'Holy' campaign or just enamored by his so-called "Independent" approach.
Whatever, the bottom line is that Joe is the Senator from/for Tel Aviv. He is an embarassment to the State of CT, to the Democratic Party and to those Jewish citizens who love America and Israel equally but place a higher value on integrity and honesty than Joe does.

As you point out, the key issue here is that what Lieberman is doing is undermining Democrats. But he is also trying to help push the debate over our Mideast policies and our domestic civil liberties policies in a particular and regressive direction. As we decry Islamophobia, we also need to be sensitive that we do not step over the line into antisemitic stereotypes about Jewish power. Not so easy in actual practice. So, coach777b, any advice?

whoa there chip, I don't think any Democrats need to hold their observations in abeyance so as to not offend the sensibilities of some zionists.
They are not my friend or ally, and I've been married to a Jewish woman for 25 years.....
when Jews are represented by their numbers and not their overwhelming right wing politics........then Jews will be less vulnerable to unsubstantiated prejudice.................Until then, from lieberman to schumer to feinstein et. al., ya got to call a spade a spade.

I don't see any rants here about Sen. Feingold or Senator Boxer............so just maybe the problem isn't anti semitism, but rather zionists trying to make it about anti semitism.

does anyone else find it interesting that the MSM have already begun to theorize the possible backlash against Hillary Clinton by her fellow congressional democrats but nobody even bothers to mention Lieberman supporting McCain. One thing is for certain:when Lieberman comes up for re-election(if he doesn't resign sooner)the DNC will foot the bill for whoever runs on the Democratic ticket and Lieberman will have to wait 3 years before he can become a paid lobbyist for Israel.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but didn't the DNC already foot the bill for a differant Dem candidate for Liebermans Senate seat the last time out, prompting Lieberman to run as an Independent? And didn't he win that race? Maybe I just don't pay enough attention to the news or something. Maybe I just dreamt it.

When will the Dems kick him out of the party? He supports Bushco and its progeny for another term, McCain. Keeping him in charge of powerful comittes is harmful for the effort in Nov.

They cannot deal with Lieberman until after the next election. As we speak the margin of seats for the "majority" is too thin. If Lieberman bolted the party and declared himself an independent who would caucus with the Republicans he could effectively swing the majority back to Repubs. If the Democrats pull off a much more significant majority in November (say 56-44) the Dems can torpedo Joe forever. For now he can continue to hold the party hostage to his demands (principally Chairman of Committee, etc.)

Lieberman not only always voting with republicans, he is also making is own laws to help Israel, and the public is afraid to say a word.

America wake up and fight the enemy from within Lieberman). If you don't speak up about the enemies of this country, not only you don't have freedom but also you are not a patriot.

Still with the hang wringing about Muslims? All the recent arrests and uncovered plots in the news have been about teenagers. White teenagers. Go figure.

Every time anything dealing with McCain comes up on HuffPost there is a great deal of huffing and puffing in criticism of whatever it is that he is doing. Well, if the posters feel so upset about McLieberman, why is it that the name of the one major Republican candidate who has, and still opposes McLieberman seldom mentioned? The McCain Republicans must be delighted with all this -- HuffPost shares their own attitude, i.e., One must either ridicule or ignore Ron Paul. Keep it up. You will help insure that the neoconned Republicans get just what they want -- a bloody war with Iran. Sheep are not only herded and sheared, they are also slaughtered.

Speak your mind, and dont be afraid of being labeled the crazy person. The truth is the truth. All they have to do is check 1 fact. Tell people your favorite internet news links. Spread the karma. I have an old friend that said to me, "You are the only person I know that is so passionate about this stuff". My responce was, "We're not kids anymore, Its our turn to take the reigns. We are in a time that is unprecidented. No longer can the average person be told lies and not have access to the truth."

In the last year, many americans have started to open their eyes to everything that is happening. Recent and past freedom of information acts, internet news, and most importantly, word of mouth, have all lead to an enlightening of all the things our own government is and continues to do. Bashing all the conspiracy theorist is no longer going to work. I myself have been on both sides now and am no longer going to stand around & be scared into submission. Its quite amazing how a few words here and there, can start to change the minds of people around you. Its 1 thing when 1 person makes a statement about the real truth. Its a whole other thing when another & another & another person speaks up. When I myself started learning and investigating the truth, most people started to think I was going crazy. Now, most are actively engaging in real conversations about our rights & the constitution. All it takes is a person to check 1 fact, and the flood gaits open. They soon realize that if that 1 was true and what about this other 1. Many of us grew up with this mind set that we were free. This can be a dangerous idea imbedded in a person's mind. When the realize that all that we thought to be true has been & is currently taken away from us, it can be devistating to the mind. Once you are over that tho, you will
