One of the most influential (and thus far subdued) voices in the Democratic primary all but declared the contest over on Friday morning.

"At this point, Barack is the presumptive nominee," said Rep. Rahm Emanuel during the New Yorker's magazine conference. "Hillary can't win but something could happen that could effect that Barack could lose the nomination."

Emanuel wouldn't go so far as to say that Clinton should drop out. "Next question!" he declared when asked. But his voice does carry political sway. The congressman has been staunchly non-committal throughout the primary process. And his ties to the Clinton administration and connections to fellow Chicago pol Obama make him one of the key figures who could help facilitate an end to the nomination battle.

Clearly, party unity was on Emanuel's mind.

"What Hillary does in the next month is important," he said. "If she spends her time contrasting with Senator McCain, drawing distinctions that help the Democratic Party, that's productive. If it's done in another way, that's not productive."

Emanuel suggested that Clinton's choice for a political path forward would come after consultation with her husband. Noting that this process has produced unpredictable results before, he nevertheless spoke about her candidacy in the past tense.

"She has a big career ahead of her," when asked by the New Yorker's Ryan Lizza what the future had in store. "As much as her ending it will... [he stopped himself] ...how the loser ends it will determine the winner. How that story gets written will determine not only the winner's capacity to go on but also the person who didn't get the nomination."

He went on: "This is an incredible person with incredible resources, capacity. She's gone through Ken Starr. She's gone through her marriage being ridiculed. She's gone through being blamed for health care and she's still going."

In addition to addressing the Democrats, Emanuel also tried his hand at assessing the Republicans. He spoke optimistically about the general election, but cautioned not to take the GOP lightly.

"Nobody should assume these guys are gonna roll over and let you scratch their belly," said Emanuel. "They are going to cling to power and, like in 06, you gotta go take it from them."

As for Sen. John McCain, Emanuel insisted that the his candidacy constituted the myth of a maverick.

"I think he's an unbelievable hardcore Republican," he said. "Our job is to show who he really is."

Danny Shea helped report this story.

UPDATE: Sarah Feinberg, the communications director for the House Democratic Caucus, e-mails Marc Ambinder:

While I realize it's a slow news day, and all 08 reporters feel every news bit must be immediately made out to be breathless, breaking, and instantly analyzed in order to break thru, I would like to clarify two points:

1. All Rahm said was that Senator Obama is clearly now the frontrunner, which by and large means, because of the calendar, he is the presumptive nominee, at this point. He was stating the obvious. Its about the calendar.

2. The "presumptive" quote is only accurate if you ignore the several sentences proceeding this half sentence and the several minutes of conversation that followed it. I'd call it selective quoting. Congressman Emanuel also stated about 90 seconds after this that he thought Senator clinton can still win the nomination and he stands by that.

Rahm Emanuel looked like the cat that dragged in something into the house. It may be a nice dream for you, because Hillary has lost some primaries and caucuses, that he really knows what he is talking about, or, even worse, that Obama knows what HE is talking about. If Michigan and Florida are not counted as they stand, with Obama getting the "uncommitted" and Hillary getting her votes, then you loyal and totally uneducated Obamacons are going to be in for a BIG SURPRISE! He won't take the national election. Emanuel thinks he is in the know, but take a look at some of the HuffPo blogs like Matt Stoller's. Obama is a leader of the brown shirts, and he does indeed intend to "consolidate power." Emanuel will be royally screwed.

"uneducated Obamacons"

Now, now your toxic heroin is the one who spoke higher about her "uneducated white voters"

I guess I can let this one slide tho, as according to some Hillary is the one obtaining the barely high school educated voters.

Umm good luck with that!

You people just won;t quit bitchin about michigan will you? Funny how this great paragon of democratic rights (Hilary Clinton) never objected to the ruling that Michigans votes wouldn't count until she saw that she needed them. When confronted with this sad truth clinton supporters ALWAYS move on to the next subject. Why has the media virtually ignored the fact that last week, Obama compromised on his proposed 50-50 split and offered Clinton a bigger piece of the pie. This woman actually wants all of the delegates she "won" from a fraudulent election. This is how she makes peace? It must be nicec to be a Clinton and never have to compromise? In not compromising she is in effect threatening to burn down the entire democratic party. Why is this not a story? The media feels sorry for the Clintons because she made them so much money by dragging this race on even when she knew she had lost.

I GUESS IT'S OFFICIAL. Emanuel has spoken. I didn't realize it before.
Now we know why we lost the last two times out. We had Emanuel and Hoyer
as closeted Bush Dogs. Everytime I see Emanuel on TV or writing a colume
I know he is compensating for GIVING ANOTHER GIFT to the man who he
helped elect, George Bush. He also compensates by electing other Bush
Dogs because he raises a lot of money. I only now realized this guy is
only a congressman and I am not alone on this board in wondering
how the hell this guy Emanuel gets away with what he does
RIGHT OUT IN PLAIN SITE. This is very discouraging. The Mocrats
are the only ones who offer any alternative to Bush and yet we are
infiltrated with people with their own agendas operating as Bush loyalists.

Agreed.

Emanuel: you betrayed us in the last election, what are you trying to deceive us into now?

Hillary Clinton Now Considered the "Presumptuous" Nominee

Truly Hillary has been through everything except being on trial for fraud and deceit.

Paul v. Clinton

http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/civilcasesummary/index.asp

You should not be running for president while on trial for fraud. Yet no major media outlet has reported this story. The Clintons always end up in court about something. This time will be no different.

It's typical of elitist liberals to ignore the will of the voters and their own rules. The presumptive nominee must have the requisite number of delegates. To declare otherwise disenfranchises those voters who States have yet to hold their primaries. It also disenfranchises the voters from Michigan and Florida whose votes should not be thrown away. I can't imagine how the Dems expect to carry Florida or Michigan by looking down their noses at those voters. If the Dems choose the manchurian candidate, Obama, they will insure another four years of Republican rule and they will have noone else to blame but themselves.

As been pointed out so many times by so many people- the Manchurian candidate is about a brain-washed presidential candidate who was a POW in southeast Asia who has lost his bearings... To my knowledge it is not about a narcissistic delusional senator from New York or her narcissistic paranoid supporters who are leery of a vast left wing, right wing , Muslim, immigrant, generational (insert your favorite delusion here) conspiracy.

In the 1963 film (and the book--if I remember correctly) it was Korea, not SE Asia. Also, Raymond Shaw was NOT a presidential candidate, his step-father was the vice presidential candidate, and Raymond was to assassinate the presidential candidate.

Now we move to the 21st century re-make. Kuwait was the theater of operations (SW Asia). And Raymond Shaw in that version was a vice presidential candidate (not president) and Capt. Marco was to assassinate the presidential candidate. Manchurian Global (Multinational Corp) was the evil force behind the plot.

Clinton or Obama? Six of one . . .

Vote for the corporate lackey of your choice.

If you're so scared of Obama, you are free to leave the country and sip wine in the South of France or something. We have a country to rebuild. If you're not onboard, shut up.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:13 AM on 05/10/2008

Oh, shut up. Nobodies ignoring anything. It simply just isn't possible to reach the needed number of delegates - for either of the candidates - at this point because nobody believed this scenerio possible. However, this type of scenerio is exactly what the super delegates were created to settle. This is just a reality that does not change - even after counting Michigan and Florida.

Wasn't the Manchurian candidate about a former POW who was brainwashed into becoming an assassin?

In case you forgot that Rahm was a big GW Bush war supporter, here's some refresher from Firedoglake,

As for Rahm's recruits strengthening what some call "centrist" positions-- and what I call reactionary positions-- just look at how they vote.

The freshmen voting most frequently abandoning the Democrats in order to vote with the Republicans are Heath Shuler (personally recruited by Rahm), Jason Altmire (not a Rahm candidate), Joe Donnelly (a Rahm candidate), Brad Ellsworth (a Rahm candidate), Baron Hill (relentlessly pursued by Rahm to run), and Nick Lampson (I hope some Texans will make public how Rahm made this happen; I'm bound to silence).

These are the guys who keep voting with the GOP on issue after issue after issue, and who constantly weaken Pelosi's chance to forge a working progressive majority. Rahm's big mistake in 2005-06 was his pigheaded belief that real anti-war candidates couldn't win and that grassroots candidates are worthless.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:02 AM on 05/10/2008

His dual loyalties are not only reflected in his dual citizenship, which causes his anti-Democratic (with a big D) votes, but also questionable is his position within a powerful foreign intelligence unit while working within the Clinton White House. Mole is not just a delicious Spanish dish.

Its not that anti-war Democrats couldn't win, its anti-war Democrats shouldn't win.

Compromise(d) indeed.

By Rahm's logic Utah and Wyoming are more important states for our party than Florida and Michigan.
Where do we find these guys?

All Gore says Florida is going to be all under water soon, so we really shouldn't count them anymore.

If Rahm is serious about supporting Obama, then Barak has gotten the support (or at least no objection) from America's most important constituency. That means that Barak has said the right things about the Middle East, and will continue our policy there.

Not sure if that makes me happy or worried.

Message to America
8 years ago US supreme Court had to apply centralism in deciding the victory of G.W Bush in 2000 Presidential elcection and made mistake . It would not be wrong to say that current America history was written by supreme court. Also in 2008 election every American feel free and can vote for Obama or MC Cain but in future don't cry for America.

Bartcop says,
In the 2000 election, our whore media demonized Gore and praised Bush.
They painted Gore as a helpless serial liar, and he was unstable if serial liar's not enough.
We didn't like it when the whore media made our decisions for us.

In the 2004 primaries, remember what our whore media did to Howard Dean?
Our whore media demonized Dean, saying he was unstable, and quite possibly wild enough
to eat a young child. Remember how they played his scream and laughed at him?
We didn't like it when the whore media made our decisions for us.

In the 2004 general election, remember what our whore media did to John Kerry?
They painted Kerry as a demented liar who claimed he went into battle in Vietnam,
while praising Bush's brave service to our country in the Air National Guard.
We didn't like it when the whore media made our decisions for us.

Now it's 2008, and once again, our whore media is up to their same, old tricks.
They have demonized our front-runner and elevated and praised Obama.
They demonized Gore, Dean and Kerry, then praised Obama
to get Hillary out of the race - and we let them do that?

We stood and applauded while they fabricated horseshit racism charges
against the best friends Black people ever had in the White House.

Soon they're going to demonize Obama and praise McCain
and we'll be shocked - because we're Democrats.

Wizkid/Bartcop, a person with a memory and attention span who actually remembers what
went on during the last 8 years, thats amazing. Rahm Emanuel is a Bush
Dog and he helps elect other Bush dogs who vote against the democratic
party. The MSM has pushed this down our throats and, it is said, is
about to do it again with McCain. McCain is supposed to be the
designated presumptively elected next president. I will not vote
for Hillary in her next Senate race. The democratic party offers
the only alternative to Bush Dogs and other allies of McCain/ Bush
but that isn't saying much. They have not succeeded in labeling
Move On as a fringe group but I now see that Move On is the
only alternative to cons like Emanuel.
