Starbucks has trotted out a new logo on their coffee cups which has raised the ire of a Christian group known as "The Resistance," leading them to call for a boycott of the Seattle chain. As Think Progress explains, the logo was part of a campaign by the company to introduce a new roast that could compete with less expensive varieties of coffee.

This logo, pictured below, caused the Resistance to issue the following press release:

Starbucks has recently introduced a new version of their logo which features a topless mermaid with her legs spread, which has caused outrage from a nation wide Christian media watchdog organization. The Resistance, with has over 3000 members nationwide, is boycotting Starbucks across the country saying their new logo is inappropriate.

The Starbucks logo has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute, explains Mark Dice, founder of the group. Need I say more? It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves, Slutbucks.

Wouldnt it be nice is just for once the good Christians of the US would do Gods work, and help the poor, the sick and the needy, and forget about always looking for anything just to bitch about? Oh wait, Good US Christians are greedy and selfish, and would never help the needy or the poor, or the sick. Not unless there is profit in it for them. My bad. Sorry..

One would think there was no higher priority than condemning the "vintagification" (totally made that up) of a corporate logo. Mermaid, Siren or Mesuline -- who cares?

These have got to be the same people that applauded an attorney general's attempt to "obscure Justice" assuming no one knew what was really there to begin with.

As a Starbucks shareholder, I am thinking about sending in a new name, "Suckbucks." How's that?

Yes, the same type of "Christian" that would love living in a virtuous, pure, and moral society like Saudi Arabia...

I'm a Christian. And I reeeaaally resent anybody calling these fu***' idiots Christians...buncha' dirty-minded, lamewit a*******. They've got no aptitude for addressing the real moral challenges our country faces, but they got plenty of time to be thinkin' about whackin' it to a freakin' coffeecup. S***...WTF??

As we all know, young, impressionable children between the ages of 2 and 10 are the majority customer group at Starbucks and would be warped by that logo. Maybe we should require a voter's ID card or at least a driver's license before we sell coffee to anyone?

Whatever happened to the Christianity of standing up to war, empire and poverty?

I think they got rich and bought into it !
They have chosen a far more cowardly path.
The mermaid on my cup has longer hair covering her nipples...I feel cheated.

The Slut, err, Starbucks PR team achieves a major coup. By putting a naughty mermaid pic on their cups they don't have to pay for advertising. The Christian right with their knee-jerk reaction to a little nudity combined with the real whores, the media, do it all for them. For free.

Two weeks from now they'll apoligize, sanitize the image, and get even MORE free PR.

Score one for the PR firm.

As if there were not enough real issues to be upset about, this takes the cake. I personally do not like the new logo as it looks like it was drawn by a five year old, whereas the old logo was more art deco in style. I have news for the Christian Right. Fish do not have legs. Nudity is the state in which we all arrive on this earth. I believe God planned it that way. So, please, direct your attention to real issues like the unethical and devastating war in Iraq and the rape of our society by the wealthy, and the state of the poor and elderly, and stop filtering everything for possible evil. There is plenty to go around out there. These are the same people who see Jesus in their cereal or on a tree or rock.

By the way, I thought mermaids were fictional beings.

Why do you ridicule Christians for protesting that with which they disagree? You protest against Bush in much harsher terms than "Slutbuckets."

Because a picture on a cup is not destroying our country. A picture on a cup can easily be ignored.

Are you seriously saying a company logo has the same impact as BushCo?! A picture is killing 1000's in Iraq? A picture is denying our veterans health care, emotional support and financial help? A drawing is bailing out corrupt financial institutions?

BushCo is bankrupting this country both financially and morally.

Because everyone knows that when mermaid sluts do the deed, they spread their fish tails.

I prefer modestly sexualized imagery to explicitly violent imagery any time. I would much rather my children see this new logo than an image of some guy nailed onto two pieces of wood, with a pained expression, tears, and blood streaming from his hands for example.

I'm so glad that Christians know who the real enemies are in this world. Wow, I almost bought a cup of coffee from a company that deals in fair trade coffee but has a mermaid with two tails.

Now.. shouldn't they be more upset that a mermaid is a magical beast like a unicorn or a dragon and therefor it promotes Magic or witch craft?

Or.. um.. maybe they could be more upset that other companies buy coffee from dictators of third-world banana republics?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:04 AM on 05/11/2008

dude, I'd bet you a week's pay the nitwits that don't like the logo wouldn't have the slightest idea what "fair trade coffee" is. They're too busy minding other people's sex lives to learn anything about morality.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:53 AM on 05/12/2008

What was the old logo? I wouldn't even have noticed the change.

Fair trade organic coffee!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:52 AM on 05/11/2008

The old logo was basically the same, only more stylized. I liked it better, however, from an aesthetic not moral point of view.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:40 AM on 05/11/2008

The "New Logo" is the OLD "Logo." As in the original logo. The new logo was sanitized f those with body image issues.
