CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Wearing a flag lapel pin, Sen. Barack Obama emphasized his patriotism and support for a strong and humane military Monday, while Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton implored West Virginians to sustain her hopes of somehow denying him the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama expects Clinton to win Tuesday's primary in West Virginia, which has large numbers of working-class whites _ a group that usually backs the former first lady _ as well as a strong military tradition. He used his visit to Charleston to combat critics' claims that he is not particularly patriotic or ready to be commander in chief, in part because he never served in the military, usually does not wear a flag pin, and opposed the Iraq war from the start.

Obama broke from his usual practice by wearing the flag pin and reading his speech instead of talking without notes. He told several thousand people at the Charleston Civic Center that patriotism means more than saluting flags and holding parades. He criticized Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain for opposing a Democratic bill to expand education benefits for veterans.

"At a time when we're facing the largest homecoming since the Second World War," Obama said of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, "the true test of our patriotism is whether we will serve our returning heroes as well as they've served us."

Pointing to the Bush administration, he said, "we know that over the last eight years we've already fallen short of meeting this test." He cited once shabby conditions at such facilities as Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and long waits and bureaucratic obstacles facing many who seek care from the Veterans Administration.

"When our troops go into battle, they serve no faction," Obama said. "They serve no party. They represent no race or region. They are simply Americans."

He proposed expanded veterans' benefits for health care, education, housing and psychiatric treatment. He said McCain opposes a Democratic-crafted bill in Congress to expand education benefits "because he thinks it's too generous."

McCain's campaign said the Arizona senator backs a Republican alternative that is better because it enhances benefits for those who stay longer in the military, thereby encouraging recruitment and retention of troops.

Clinton planned four campaign stops in West Virginia on Monday, hoping for a big margin Tuesday that could slow the continuing drift of Democratic superdelegates to Obama's camp. Implying that the party could lose in November if he is the nominee, Clinton told patrons of Tudor's Biscuit World in Charleston: "I keep telling people, no Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia."

At a campaign stop in Logan, W.Va., Clinton was introduced by state Senate Majority Leader H. Truman Chafin, who talked about Clinton carrying the state 80 percent to 20 percent, or even 90-10.

"You think this crowd's noisy, just wait till we win like 80-20," Chafin said.

In New York, Sen. Chuck Schumer, one of Clinton's major supporters, endorsed the idea of Clinton and Obama running together.

"Hillary and Barack have both run very strong and great races, and I think they'd be a strong ticket together," Schumer told a breakfast.

After the speech, Obama stopped at Schultzie's Billiards hall, where he showed greater skill at pool than he had at bowling last month in Pennsylvania.

As a small crowd oohed and ahhed at his third consecutive good shot, Obama said his skill was "the sign of a misspent youth. I wasn't doing wholesome things like bowling."

Still, Obama lost to Iraqi war veteran Paul Scott, 24, because he accidentally knocked in the eight ball prematurely.

Obama told reporters he will have to consistently fight rumors that he doesn't say the Pledge of Allegiance, among other falsehoods widely spread on the Internet. "This is something that's been systematically fed into the bloodstream," he said. He said he had no idea who is doing it.

Obama's campaign announced Monday that he will visit politically neglected Florida and Michigan, as he pivots to a general election strategy.

It will be his first time in either state since signing a pledge nine months ago not to campaign in them because they violated national party rules with early primaries.

All the Democratic presidential candidates agreed to boycott Michigan and Florida. Clinton won both states, although Obama's name was not on the Michigan ballot, and no delegates were awarded. Restoring the delegates is a major part of Clinton's longshot strategy for the nomination.

Clinton's last best hope is to use strong showings in West Virginia and Kentucky to make the case that Obama is weak among key Democratic constituents.

Obama's campaign announced a five-state tour over the next two weeks that includes stops in remaining primary states South Dakota and Oregon but is dominated by swing states where he hopes to run well against McCain.

Obama leads in delegates needed to secure the Democratic nomination. He'll try to rebound from Tuesday's expected loss in West Virginia by campaigning this week in Missouri, a state that President Bush won in 2000 and 2004.

On Wednesday, he planned two stops in Michigan _ the swing Macomb County and the GOP stronghold of Grand Rapids. He plans to spend three days starting May 21 in Florida, with stops in Tampa, Orlando, Palm Beach County and Miami. The area is a popular stop for political fundraising, but the Obama campaign says the candidate will mostly be appealing for votes.

"Our schedule reflects the fact that we are still fighting for votes and delegates in the remaining contests but also that we are going to places that are going to be competitive in the fall," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

Obama should give voters a look at who wants to disenfranchise them. That way they'll know who not to vote for in the November election.

"Clinton's last best hope is to use strong showings in West Virginia and Kentucky to make the case that Obama is weak among key Democratic constituents."

But if Hillary is LOSING, wouldn't she be WEAKER among the rest of the Democratic constituents? Are the constituents who voted for Obama not KEY? I don't understand this argument.

The real problem is the Dems have shot themselves in the foot again. They have put themselves in a clft stick and they can't get out. Obama can't win and if Hillary is given the vote she will lose. That's a win/win siituation for the Republicans.

Good. It is time to focus on running against John McCain. The media is still focused on this tired " what if he can't win the white working class vote" issue. They are clearly trying to pull the race card out against Obama any chance they get and continue to focus on his race. I am glad it has not worked and will not work in the future. The reality is that Obama is 7 pointsa ahead of McCain in the latest ABC poll and 9 points ahead of McCain in the latest LA Times poll. The question is why couldn't John McCain get his numbers up while Clinton and Obama were fighting it out in the primaries????

Obama made his political bones in the South Side of Chicago and he sided up to the ulra left wing AND the Chicago political machine to get ahead. He would like America to totally forget his 20 years in Ilinois politics, all the decisions he made there, all the controversial ties with that community.

The republicans will define him as the leader of the resurgent and controlling left wing Democratic party. Republicans aside we don't know this dudes idealogy. Maybe he doesn't know it. It looks like he did what he had to do to climb his way up the ladder of Illinois politics. His left wing and machine connections are coming home to roost.

Camelot in smithereens.

This is CRAZY! We have, on almost every blog, a ton of "Democrats" claiming - after we have a nominee - that he is "unelectable". And what will be the predicating factor in whether or not he's electable?

Whether or not he gets the votes of the Democrats who claim he's unelectable. Holy self-fulfilling prophecy, Batman.

The policies for both nominees were virtually identical. So how is it that these "Democrats" are more than happy to pull a lever for a third Bush term, effectively abandoning every value noted above?

And why are they threatening to do this? Because the person for whom they voted - a person that they've never met, and are judging from what they see on television, is not going to be the one who represents the values. The emotional wrath is of greater importance than this bloody war? Are you kidding?

This tells me they didn't have the values to begin with, and it tells me that they're vicarious egos somehow trump the lives of thousands of American kids who will be fighting in an illegal war as a result.

And for those who are voting for McCain to somehow protect a "woman's right to the Presidency", keep in mind that this vote results in three new conservative Supreme Court Justices, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Effectually, their vote for a woman's right results in the overturning of a woman's right.

If the Obama people could take their heads out of their collective arses they might realize that Obama will run into a brick wall with > 50% of the voting population because of his many controversial left wing associations. His springboard is the left wing South Side of Chicago and he hopes America will overlook these political chickens coming home to roost.

I don't blame Wright for being pissed with Obama; the good Reverend punched his ticket many times so he can get ahead. He and Obama high-fived many times. Now Obama doesn't know him.

Add to this baggage: Tony Rezko, a thin resume, no political compass, no ability to connect with white blue collar, Hispanics, the Jewish community will revoke him because of Iran comments, and you wonder why Obama is not electable against McCain? McCain by 100 electoral votes.

F--- Chuck Schumer and all Clinton supporters who now propose that she become Obama's running mate. She has negative ratings around 50% and would hurt his ticket. Republicans and independents who would have voted for Obama would be turned away, and those of us who supported Sen. Obama all along would be turned off that he would pick her after the campaign she ran of trying to steal the election, smearing him, and playing the race cards. You encourage her to run for governor of your state, Chuck Schumer, why don't you? NY may want her, but the country doesn't. (And I'm not even getting started on the food taster bit.)

Obama is toast on his own. He MIGHT make it with Hillary. Even Hillary can't erase all of Obama's left wing history in Chicago. They made the guy, now he never heard of Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers.
Hillary is strong enough to deflect the Republican attack on Obama's past.

Obama is fully entitled to have his left wing associations; just don't expect most of the USA to approve it. This is largely a conservative country.

The last Democratic landslide was in 1964! Even Carter won by a slim margin after the Nixon
catastrophe. The Clintons know how to beat the Republicans. Obama will be preaching his unity message. You don't hunt big game in your underwear.

You just don't or won't get it, we are not voting for Obama, no matter what...accept it. Stop pretending we will. A write in for Hllary, a vote for McCain, staying home, voting independant or 3rd party. Different choices being made, but still not Obama votes, face it, it is reality, pretending it isn't will be why you will lose. I am writing in Hillary no matter what else happens I am voting for her. I'm not telling you to change or do anything different, just face the fact that the things people are saying they truly mean.

Unlike McCain, Obama clearly knows the definition of patriotism, supporting our troops by treating them with respect both in the field & when they return from service. One needn't be a veteran or active-duty soldier to exhibit true patriotism. If McCain really supported the troops, he'd remove them from harm's way as efficiently as possible. Anyone who voted for the Iraq War in the first instance is equally complicit in creating all the military problems we have now, both the quagmire Bush's gang forced on our troops abroad and the socio-economic crises resulting therefrom, not least of which is the epidemic of "PTSD" & all other mental illnesses related to battle, along with massive suicide rates for returning soldiers concealed by the VHA doctors who don't want the public to know the truth.
Obama's multicultural upbringing, thanks to his cosmopolitan anthropologist mother, engendered in him a profound appreciation for the values and principles on which the nation was founded. He learned never to take anything for granted and to keep all his promises to others, no matter the personal cost. It strikes me as grossly ironic that WV voters would be so devoted to Clinton, given how well Obama performed in earlier contests, caucuses & primaries alike, populated primarily by western white working-class folks who live by the salt of the earth, though that of blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans & Asians shouldn't be discounted either.

Obama is our best chance for withdrawing from Iraq. John McCain will not do it. Hillary voted to authorize Iraq and went around supporting it early on.

One way Obama plans to deal with the gas price problems is with a windfall tax on oil companies. If their profits sky-rocket, they will have to pay a higher and higher percentage in taxes. That tax revenue would immediately be invested in alternative energy development.

So in one swoop you penalize oil companies for maximizing profits and make them fund their own competition if they screw the consumer.

I say that as a fellow vet (US Army 1990-1995, 2nd ID, the big Indian head).

You make no sense at all!! $8 gas is right around the corner and it has nothing to do with Obama. Bush,Cheney and the oil companies are lining their pockets as we speak, and they're not trying to do anything about oil and gas prices, instead they're giving the American people rebate checks(a band-aid) that they will most likely use to fill they're gas tanks, and that money goes right back to the crooks. So what you're a vet, (so is my husband). How is that relevant to what you posted. I guess you have PTSD, you make no sense.
