McCain's Age Again Seen As Major Problem For Voters

Yet another poll, this one by the Washington Post and ABC News, has found that Sen. John McCain's age appears to be a major hang-up for voters, far more so than Sen. Barack Obama's race. From ABC's write up:

Age continues to look like a major hurdle for McCain. Thirty-nine percent of Americans say they'd be uncomfortable with a president first taking office at age 72, far more than say they'd be uncomfortable with a woman (16 percent) or African-American (12 percent) as president.

The greatest risk of losing votes is among those who are "entirely" uncomfortable with the idea; that's 15 percent for a 72-year-old president, vs. 6 and 7 percent, respectively, for a black or female president. Slightly more seniors say they'd be entirely uncomfortable with a president that age, 20 percent, as do adults under 65, 14 percent.

Interestingly, voters who are concerned with Obama's race appear to be those very blue-collar whites that have become such a hot topic in recent weeks:

While overall discomfort with an African-American president is much lower, it rises among less-educated whites - the same group that's been a challenge for Obama in the Democratic primaries. Among whites who haven't gone through college, 17 percent say they'd be at least somewhat uncomfortable with a black president; that compares with just 4 percent of white college graduates. Clinton may face a similar problem, however; less-educated whites also are more apt to be uncomfortable with a woman president (21 percent, vs. 7 percent of white college graduates).

This poll -- like the last ABC News/Washington Post survey -- finds no apparent damage to Obama in the controversy over his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Six in 10 Americans, and 73 percent of Democrats, say Obama has done "the right amount" to distance himself from Wright, rather than too little or too much.

When you start talking about age that is at or exceeds life expectancy (where McCain is right now) then yes, Age is a legitimate issue. There chances for physical and mental illness start increasing at alarming rates. Imagine if we were able to elect Reagan for a third term. Regardless of your opinions of him, anyone can agree that a Reagan third term could've been absolutely disastrous because of his Alzheimers.

McCain's age issue is not in the same league as gender or color. Unlike race and gender, it has scientifically shown that the mental capacities of a person deteriorate as they get older. Granted there are some people that remain sharp till the day they die, there there are a significant number that don't. Voters should at least be informed of the risk, and heavily vet the VP candidate before casting their vote. If someone has an age issue, it should get vetted out in a primary when you actually have a chance of having candidates with similar policies.

Bottom line, If seniors are the group that has the biggest issue with McCain's age you should take notice. Do you think 20% of women think that Hillary's gender would cause performance issues or 20% of African Americans think that way about Obama?

However, I'm not voting for McCain because of his policies first.

Anyone who doesn't vote for McCain is prejudiced against old people.

Considering he's my grandparents' age and my grandfathers are both bigoted misogynists.... no problem. I will not vote for bigoted, misogynistic old men, especially ones that flip-flop so frequently that the word Alzheimer's starts coming to mind.

A number of people have said that talking about his age as a negative is ageist and therefore is as out of bounds as using Obama's race or Hillarys gender against them.
I believe that McCain's age, coupled with his previous poor health makes him too much of a risk to be elected. Being old does not decrease his value as a person, it does however call into question his ability to perform the tasks the executive office would place on him.
However prohibitive these things are however they should be talked about with respect, not merely for McCain but for all of us who some day will age too.
You cannot be on the side of change and elevating politics while hurling ad hominem attacks.
Jokes about impotence, incontenence, and dementia are cheap, tastless, and demeaning.
You can criticize without bias and bile.

Kinda like saying that, because we're not supposed to discriminate against people for their physical disabilities, we should be hiring quadriplegics to stock shelves in the brick/landscaping section of Home Depot.

I expect people performing manual labor tasks to be physically capable of them, I wouldn't go to a blind optometrist, and therefore I won't vote for the candidate most likely to become enfeebled and/or die in office.

Really? Cause i just have problem with his stance on war, the economy, and keeping his filthy male hands off women and their right to choose. Other than that, i guess he would not make a good president, oh, say 15 years ago.

For me his age is not as much of a problem as the out-of-date nature of his ideas. I don't want a president who is still living in the mid 20th century. Time to move forward.

That said, his heath and mental acuity are a problem for me. No more of the VP being the real president. I want an age cap on the presidency. It's possible to be too young for the job. And it's possible to be too old.

Does passing a lot of legislation make you fit to be President? As a President I would think critical thinking, rational thinking and the ability to articulate one's thoughts in a clear anc concise manner would far outweigh experience on the amount of legislation passed.

My best friend's father died of a sudden heart attack recently. He was 70 years old and apparently in good health. McCain will be 72 this summer, 3 years older than 1980 Ronald Reagan. He would be the oldest president in history by 3 years. He is 26 years older than Obama, who is a year older than the 1992 Bill Clinton.

Since the 2006 election, 6 members of Congress have died. Only one of them, age 80, was older than McCain. The most recent death was a 68 year old, four years younger than McCain.

Going back to Reagan, he brushed aside concerns for his age in 1984 with his clever debate line against Mondale. However, we know now that he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's at 73, just a year older than McCain today.

While we have a Vice President to take over should McCain die, what is worse and more likely is a Reagan or Wilson situation, where McCain does not die but has a stroke or some other age related illness that limits his effectiveness. It would precipitate a Constitutional crisis as his cabinet would have to decide when and if they should strip him of power, something never done before in US history.

The office ages people rapidly. Bush looks 25 years older today than in 2000. What will McCain look like in 4 years if he is president? He's already 72!

Non-issue once he picks a VP running mate.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:26 AM on 05/13/2008

Yes, but who is he going to pick? People better like him & really pay attention, because That's who will be Prez sooner than you think. And I'm sure whoever it is will be counting on just that. Thriller novels have been written with less of a plot.

Actually, that IS the very issue at hand. McCain is showing to be a typical GOP candidate (diminished mental capacity). Chances are that his VP pick would become president or at least be Cheneyesque and running the show.

MyCane will not release his medical records. Gee...wonder why? Ultra high blood pressure? Mini-strokes? Diabetes?
Wife won't release her tax returns.
Guess we'll be hearing how he will restore integrity back to the WH, too.
He could be a bigger mistake to elect than Bush, if that is possible.

Hell even his Military record is sealed for security purposes.

How is it posible that this man earned the nomination?

People are all dewey-eyed because he had a really lousy hotel stay once. As far as I'm concerned, that does NOT make him qualified to be president. In fact, just the opposite. Diminished health and mental faculties...PTSD is a real possibility. That would explain the sudden rages for sure.

"....because he had a really lousy hotel stay once....."

I really don't think we should be trivializing five years as a POW. McCain and the other POWs were subjected to years of physical and mental torture, and while I agree that we don't need to get all dewey-eyed over it, it also should not be fodder for jokes or catty remarks.

Previous releases of his medical records in 2000 indicated that he did not suffer from mental problems owing to his POW status, just the physical after-effects. The occasional bad temper is just part of his personality.

He released them in 2000 without complaint, back when he was a spry 64 year old. Has something come up in the past few years that we shouldn't know about.

He is highly sensitive about his age. He attacked Obama twice for praising his experience. He called his wife a c&*# for pointing out his bald spot in public.

The more McCain hides from his age, the worse it will be for him. Over course, his biggest problem this year is that big, ugly "R" after his name.

In the 1950s, life expectancy in the US was just over 68. Today, it's much closer to 80. Not to contest the wisdom of Eisenhower, mind you, just to point out that it's comparing demographic apples to oranges.

The life expectancy of former POWs is *nowhere near* 80, especially those who are current or former smokers... notice the cigarette in his hand in the POW films. Life expectancy of cancer survivors is also not near 80. McCain is not your typical healthy wealthy 72yr old.

Exactly and this is what worries me about the American people shouldnt you be more concerned that John McCain wants to keep things THE WAY IT IS. That is more frightening to me than his age.

Of all the wonderful Senators we have like Hagle, Biden, Dodd etc we get stuck with
these 2 scums Clinton and McCain----The two most useless people ever.
They should go out and get real jobs instead of living on the dole.
How anyone would want to
vote for them is beyond understanding

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:38 AM on 05/13/2008

Speaking of "living on the dole," it says a lot that McCain with all his millions (and access to his wife's multi-millions), gladly accepts his monthly Social Security check (in addition to his $58,000 annual military pension).

I have great admiration for Ron Paul in that he will not accept the Social Security to which he is "entitled," saying rather, "That money should go to those who truly need it, not to someone like me who has enough to live comfortably without it."

Granted, Ron Paul is in the minority (perhaps the ONLY politician who has taken this high road), but that just to me sums up McCain in a nutshell: "Never enough for greed."

39% have a problem with McCain's age; I was not to surpised about that

BUT isn't it interesting considering the "spin" going on lately that

16% have a problem with Hillary's gender;
21% of the less-educated whites have a problem with Hillary's gender;

12% have a problem with Obama's race;
17% of the less-educated whites have a problem with Obama's race.

Kind of blows Hillary's claim that under-educated whites would never vote for Obama, seems they would be less willing to vote for a female.
