Love 'em or loathe 'em, you've got to respect the tenacity of Hillary Clinton's television surrogates. Like the Japanese Imperial soldiers who refused to abandon their jungle hideouts until twenty or thirty years after the end of World War II, Hillary's battle-tested legion of television studio shock troops refuses to offer the slightest hint of surrender despite the dire circumstance of their campaign.

So what is to be done with these surrogates -- the Terry McAuliffes, James Carvilles, Ann Lewises, Lanny Davises, Howard Wolfsons and others...

Fiercely loyal, combative and articulate, the stable of Clinton television surrogates reminds one of the lion cage at the zoo. Or maybe it's the shark tank at the aquarium.

To this day, these skilled spinners push facts, reality and past-held positions, to the side in order to promote electability arguments that border on the unreasonable and anti-democratic. With the zeal of wide-eyed crusaders, Hillary's advocates appear to relish the role they play -- defending their beloved queen to the death as her enemies surround her.

While most political types in today's day and age can be expected to bend with the wind, Hillary's loyal group of surrogates appear bound to her instead by some sort of suicide pact. These seasoned pros seem content to jeopardize their own political self-interest by continuing to take pot-shots at the presumptive nominee and promoting a delegate strategy that, if taken to its logical conclusion, would sew fissures in the Democratic Party that could take a generation to repair.

Indeed, fealty to such a reckless strategy could raise the question as to where their loyalty truly lies -- to the Party or to the Clintons. But assuming that their ultimate loyalty will lie with the Party's nominee, it begs the further question -- is there a role for these stalwarts of past Democratic campaigns on Team Obama? Or, after Obama finally salts away the nomination, will they just fade away?

It is hard to overstate the difference in style between the cadres of television surrogates assembled by the two campaigns. Especially when compared with the litigious, take-no-prisoners style of the Clinton advocates, Obama's television team -- filled with the likes of Tom Daschle, Claire McCaskill, Amy Klobuchar and David Axelrod - looks like the kind of people you'd rather have babysit your kids than take to a knife fight with John McCain.

This is not by accident. Obama wants a team that reflects his call for a new style of politics that allows for disagreement without disagreeableness.

But no matter how you think of their performance during this primary, one can't help but recognize the talent and tenaciousness that is the hallmark of Clinton's crusaders. And one has a sneaking suspicion that the general election campaign may well become a knife fight. But whether or not Team Obama will want these Clinton cast-offs -- or even trust them -- to play a role in the general campaign remains to be seen.

I would DEFINATELY trust them...

To undermine the campaign, try to get insider information to feed to the Republican campaign and slime machine, and to make sure that Barack is destroyed from within, and loses in 2008, so their Borg Queen can run again in 2012 on the "I-told-you-so-Shoulda-voted-for-me-What-did-all-that-hope-get-you-when-McCain-won" platform.

Hmmmm... And yes, I really do think she's sneaky enough to try this. And if she got elected in 2012, she and Bill would just issue Presidential Pardons to the 100s of people that broke laws, so that she and Bill could not get indicted for their part in the crimes.

I would not trust them ... Period!

"... you've got to respect the tenacity..."

What you refer to as tenacity, I reightfully view as delusion. She lost a long time ago. The Democratic Party is systematically being divided and damaged by a self-serving power addict who will do anything to get her next fix. We all suffer at the hands of "people" like that. I have no respect for her campaign nor those of her surrogates who so willingly practice self-delusion.

Clinton lost. Period. Past time for her to leave.

It would be fun to see you try to articulate some details about a delusion here. Clinton's wife knows exactly what she's doing. (I hope someone hastens to point out that that seems like I'm trying to say I can read her mind.) Tenacity is the right word. She's waiting for the next revelation about grandiloquent, done-nothing tyro senator Obama's unsavory associations. That he has an affinity for such things should be clear even to the most starry-eyed Obama thrall by now. The alleged communist "father firgure"; Racketeer Rezko; Ayres, an Obama buddy who thinks he should bomb more Americans; and a wife who has had only a recent episode of respect for her country...what's next? Clinton is wise to hang on and be available in case the next one surfaces before the convention.

Hatefilled, mean, spiteful, untrustworthy.... This post by THEHillbilly perfectly illustrates why Obama could never place the Clinton's or their surrogates in positions of trust, if he were elected POTUS. They are treacherous in battle and treacherous in defeat.

Ignoble. Dishonest. Poor losers. I have not seen one single Obama supporter wish for harmful events to befall Sen. Clinton so that Sen. Obama could step into her shoes. As for unsavory associates, the Clintons, their surrogates, and supporters should throw no stones, as they live in glass houses themselves. This is shameful behavior from people who are SUPPOSED to be Democrats. Even sadder, they are supposed to be adults. We would never suspect it by their words and actions.

PS. Hillbilly, The Rezko trial is over. Both sides rested their cases, and closing arguments are to start this week. Obama was rarely mentioned, and absolutely no evidence of wrongdoing on his part was found. I wonder if Sen. Clinton will come out smelling as sweet when the Peter Paul trial commences this fall? Also, I'd get off the Ayres kick if I were you. Hillary hung out with some pretty radical characters herself in her younger years, including supporting communists. Personally, I couldn't care less what happened 30-40 years ago. I prefer to forgive and forget. Can you do the same?

They keep saying Obama can't win.
But I know he can, and so does he.
He has a secret weapon that will do him very well, thank you.

He is underestimated always will be.

He should let THEM ALL GO. There are plenty of sensible government officials that can speak the same language as the surrogates you describe. They are fighting to the end, because like HRC, they are all trying, desperately to remain in the spotlight. Once its over, they will be unemployed! No wonder.....

If Obama defeats McCain, these people will become high paid talking heads. Oh wait, that's what they already are. Well, maybe George Stephanopolous will help them get jobs at ABC. James Carville will paint his head green and go back to playing the Alien in the Alien movies. Mark Penn will gain some more weight as he spends Hillary's millions.

Hiring Clinton's Surrogates would be like starting a Quarterback that only can throw interceptions and always fumbles.

No thanks. Plus they are not Cheap.

At the conclusion of her victory speech in Charleston, W.Va., on Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton told the story of a supporter named Florence Steen, who passed away last Sunday. The 88-year-old South Dakotan had just voted for Clinton by absentee ballot, ahead of the state's June 3 primary. It's a touching story, but will her vote still count?

No. As dictated by a 2001 state law, the South Dakota Department of Health is responsible for furnishing the county auditors with a list of registered voters who have died each month. This information is used to update the state's electronic voter-registration file, which was created by a different 2001 law. Absentee ballots are collected by county auditors and remain sealed until the election, so if an absentee voter dies prior to the election, then her ballot is never opened.

Given the ineptitude with which Hillary's "surrogates" have handled her "unbeatable machine" of a campaign, it would be utter madness for Obama to try to employ them in any useful way.

Yes, her campaign has been tenacious -- or perhaps even pernicious. But haven't we already witnessed what happens when such tenacity is employed in going down the wrong path? Bush tried it and failed. Hillary tried it and failed.

That having been said, if these people aren't included in some way, they have shown they can be trouble for Obama. Best solution: find some equivalent of an outpost in Siberia.

God Bless 'em and I'm not mad at 'em, but think about it. How could Obama ever have James Carville representing him anywhere? There have been a lot of very below the belt things said. (Remember what he did for weeks on end to Governor Richardson?) And Terry McAulliffe talks too loud and spins way too much. How could a campaign based on honesty find a place for a guy who makes it up as he goes week by week. They all seem to whole heartedly embrace old politics. And that is very definitely not what Obama is about. David Axelrod has done pretty well so far. I think we'll trail along with him.

I think Lanny Davis is the most offensive of the hit men. If all that is accomplished this political season is that he is retired forever from television that will enough for me.

Mixed bag.

The pragmatic view - We need every enthusiastic and vocal supporter we can rally in order to win in Nov.

The idealistic view - Clinton loyalists who were smart, loyal and steadfast without stretching the envelope of decency and credibility should definitely have a place in the campaign, but it's unclear whether those (regardless of how bright or talented) - who either (a) had a nasty edge to their style (so that the voting public would hate them), (b) were prone to say stuff that reached beyond the limits of credibility (so that the voting public wouldn't believe them) or (c) were mostly inclined to insinuate, tack, parse and spin (so that the voting public couldn't trust them) - should play any kind of role in the campaign.

Bottom Line: Kumbaya. Build bridges. But don't lose your soul.

Yes, it's important to distinguish between the handful of highly-paid cynical hacks who were her spokespeople and top-level political operatives, and the 99 percent of Clinton supporters -- from field-level organizers to volunteers to plain old voters -- who backed her for good and decent reasons and who would make a positive contribution to the general election campaign if they wanted to stay involved.

ALL of these people you mention are accomplices.

Its partly THEIR lying, spinning, disingenuousness, and refusal to accept reality that has done in Hillary.

This is part of what Obama supporters are trying to get away from in the OLD way of politics, and Obama is winning without them and their stupidity.

Andy,
There will be a place for these surrogates in 2012, after McCain has been president, when Hillary runs for the presidency again. I wish I could say after Obama has had a one term presidency, but he's not going to make it that far. He will be defeated by loyal Hillary supporters who will be voting for McCain.

That is unbelievablely selfish and disgusting.

I wonder if these supporters will head straight to Iraq to relieve our troops if Mc Cain gets elected (guess that doesn't matter since she voted for the war in the first place). Hopefully they make sure not to get pregnant either by accident or by uglier means since choice will go right out the window (feminism, anyone? Any true feminist will go with the candidate who will keep Roe v. Wade in place). Maybe they'll win the lottery so they'll have money for other things besides gasoline (which will likely get more expensive while that illegal war wages on - but wait, they might be in Iraq anyway to replace our troops).

Honestly, to see a group of people threatening to vote Republican (if Hillary doesn't get the nomination), or wanting their donations back (if Florida wasn't seated right away, or Michigan sometime later, for that matter), bullying superdelegates... It's like watching those kids who take their ball and go home if they lose the game. The sad part is that we're not playing a game.

What I don't understand is where Clinton thinks she is going to get the additional support. Her supporters aren't enough, and she will never get the same support from the black community. She has also alienated many, and her racist vote is only in play because she is running against a black man. It's hard to see Clinton running again. Another failure in the making.

They aren't going anywhere. Begala and Carville are both CNN contributors and Terry is a former party chair. Look at Begala today - bashing Bush and sticking up for Obama. Same face, different message.

I'm a Clinton supporter but I am surprised at how few of the Obama supporters embrace his message of unity/politics-of-tomorrow. It makes it so much harder for Clinton supporters to cross over to Obama when we are called racists, hill-billies, destroying the party, idiots. My friends and I accept Obama WILL be the nominee of the party and that is how it should be if he has the majority of votes. The party is stronger after this process, it has more donors, millions of new voters (registered by both campaigns), armies of volunteers and a tested candidate ready to fight the big fight.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:19 PM on 05/15/2008

There's unity and then there's stupid optimism. It would be foolish to NOT have some reservations regarding Hillary's surrogates, considering the smear campaign they were willing to run against the most likely nominee of their own party. At this point, these guys have to make some restitution more than a simple gesture to earn the party's trust again. It's proof time.

As for the epithets leveled at Hillary's supporters: some of it is deserved, though these labels certainly don't apply to all of Hillary's supporters. And if you are honest with yourself, you must admit that Hillary brought it on herself by pandering to racism with her "white hard working white voters" comments, among a whole slew of others.

Prodigal sons and daughters are welcome to return to the party fold. We have no obligation to lay out the red carpet for them, however, given the past few months of seriously bad campaign behavior.

Well, just as there are some Obama supporters who are as you describe, there are plenty of Clintonistas who scream about rather seeing McCain as president. Let's face it, most of us, on both sides, are pretty reasonable and concilliatory, regardless of some bruised feelings. On the blogs and messageboards, however? Well, vitriol is what gets you attention.

You're totally right - most supporters are more reasonable and not the name-callering-radicals (on both sides).

What will be funny to see is as soon as the primary is over, people will look back at this time period fondly. Wounds will heal very quickly and the media (even Keith Olbermann) will swirl the first time Hillary appears on Obama's campaign plane, introduces him at a rally, and fundraises for him in New York.

I'm tired of all the ugliness, myself. I think most Americans are, too. Clinton's surrogates don't know anything else. They only know how to fight dirty. I'd rather they didn't resurface on an Obama team.

Besides, in these last few months, they've shown themselves to be very comfortable with outright lies and total misrepresentation of the facts. They've lost all credibility, so they'd be a negative for any campaign wanting to be trusted by the people. Terry McAuliffe especially has destroyed any public trust he might have enjoyed.

It is entirely up to the Clintons, their surrogates, and their supporters as to what doors will remain open or closed to them in the future. Most of them have been around for a long, long time and will manage to land on their feet, just as the Clintons will sign lucrative book deals to replenish their personal coffers in the near future. They are a talented crew with a lot of knowledge and expertise in areas that a new Dem administration could or should(?) tap where possible. However, even if some are absorbed into an Obama administration, I doubt they would ever be placed in positions of trust again, as they have proven their treachery at every turn.

Sen. Obama, Sen. Edwards, and others have extended the olive branch to Sen. Clinton and her supporters. So far, it has been rejected. Instead, rabid threats of voting for Sen. McCain or seceding from the party have been the most frequent response. Personally, I am over these temper tantrums. They can accept or reject the invitation to join us; we will not be held hostage by any one candidate, gender, or ethnic group. However, I think it is a real possiblity that the Clintons and many of their supporters may become Republicans or form a third party. It is obvious that they have no loyalty to the Democratic Party, and are willing to actually destroy it when they are thwarted. I think that very few Dems would miss them.
