The artist may not have talent, but he ain't dumb. Time for me to sign off now and see if I can design a statue like this -- a vacuum designed to suck the cash from the pockets of a rich fool with no taste.

Somebody greatly overpaid. Oh, well, if you are loaded, you can afford to be a sucker.

Was that $15.10 or $15.1M?

Figgers which of the many pieces of art HuffPo would show.

And Mr. Murakami would like to thank Larry Craig for his winning bid.

Art is the biggest scam on Earth. Especially the stuff by living "artists".

Separating dumb rich people from their money. Hilarious.

That is not how art works. You can get really good art for $1k-10k if you know where to look. At the $1k level it hardly pays for the artist (they, too, have to pay rent and materials are more expensive than most people imagine). I have a few pieces I really love and I did not spend much money on them. Am I going to be rich by collecting them? No. But it's fun. And you would be surprised how happy you can make an artist if you just honestly tell them why you love the piece (and how that easily knocks off 20% of their price which is 50% below what you would pay in a gallery).

Having said that: if you refer to art galleries, you are right. They are usually the biggest scam on Earth. Especially for the artists. Most art galleries do not sell fine art, anyway, but just artisan pieces. Most "paintings" in US galleries are mass produced replicas. But most Americans wouldn't know the difference even if it was written on the piece (which it usually is!).

This article depicts the Marie Antoinette moment of the new millennium. Now far be it from me to suggest that these activities should be abridged because of world turmoil. Besides, these auctions are essentially a magnificent version of a garage sale, replete with international money laundering, no?
But the fact that one of the attendees could be so detached from a reality just outside the small sphere of economic crack addicts - has me considering giving up Golf.

Art stopped being 'art 'about 3 decades ago. Now its roughly on par with that fad of buying Beany Babies as an investment back in the 90s. People will basically by any crap if they believe they can offload it to another sucker for a higher price at a later date.

Well said.

"Recession? What recession?" Barbara Gladstone, a Chelsea dealer, said jokingly as she was leaving the salesroom....

Is "jokingly" the correct word, or would "laughingly" have been more appropriate? That kind of money buys Congresspeople and Presidents...and creates recessions accumulating even more of it.

ibsteve2u,

I was about to post the same quote before I looked up and saw that you had already done so.

It's an astonishingly flippant remark coming at a time when many of us are struggling with the soaring costs of food while watching the value of our largest investment, our home, plummet. Meanwhile, the unscrupulous financiers that got us into this mess also happen to be the ones bidding millions of dollars at these auctions.

One wonders if elites like Ms. Gladstone are ignorant or just plain insensitive.
