CANNES, France — Sean Penn may be president of the Cannes Film Festival jury _ but don't expect any buttoned-up presidential behavior from the Hollywood rebel.

During a news conference on opening day Wednesday, the actor-director lit up two cigarettes in defiance of French laws against smoking in public buildings. He used the F-word. And he poked fun at his reputation.

Asked by a reporter if he could confirm that he had hesitated before taking the jury presidency because it means being "wise and sober" for 12 days, the "Into the Wild" director quipped, "How many days have I got left?"

Penn, a regular at Cannes, won the best actor award here for "She's So Lovely," and he showed his own movies "The Pledge" and "The Indian Runner" here. When Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River" played at Cannes, it generated early buzz for Penn's performance, which went on to win an Academy Award.

Penn wasn't all jokes and antics at Cannes _ he also let his serious, thoughtful side shine through, urging reporters to see a documentary that the festival included at his special request. "The Third Wave" is Alison Thompson's look at volunteers who joined relief efforts in Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami.

"I thought that it was the closest thing that I had ever seen on film to giving any kind of answer to 'what's the purpose of life?' _ at least for those who might be lucky enough to have two good legs and a dollar in their pocket," he said.

Penn also talked politics, saying that he's not supporting any particular candidate in the U.S. presidential election, though he is "encouraged by the kind of exciting support that Barack Obama has."

As he often does, Penn railed against President Bush. Asked about Bush's politics, he said the choice of the word "politics" was unfortunate. "It's just a shame that we have to bastardize the term 'politics' in attributing it to people like that, because politics, again, should really be an organization of helping each other," he said.

Over the next 12 days, Penn will lead a jury made up of director Alfonso Cuaron ("Children of Men"), actress Natalie Portman ("V for Vendetta"), comic book artist-filmmaker Marjane Satrapi ("Persepolis"), actor-director Sergio Castellitto ("My Mother's Smile"), actress Jeanne Balibar ("Clean"), director Apichatpong Weerasethakul ("Tropical Malady"), director Rachid Bouchareb ("Days of Glory") and actress Alexandra Maria Lara ("Downfall").

The winners will be announced May 25.

Angela Doland's story conveniently left out that Sean Penn also said that "Barak Obama has a phenomenally inhumane and unconstitutional voting record". I was pretty amazed to learn that somebody in Hollywood actually looked into Obama's voting record in the Illinois state Senate. What I believe Mr. Penn was refering to was Barak Obama's defat of the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, a law that simply stated that you cannot kill an infant who survives an abortion. This humane piece of legislation was not opposed by orthodox liberals such as Kennedy, Boxer or Hillary Clinton. It was not even opposed by the National Abortion Rights Action League. Only Obama spoke out about it on the floor of the Illinois state Senate. He defeated the bill effectively voting for infanticide. Please refer to Obama's Top Ten Reasons for Supporting Infanticide-Jill Stanek & Sean Penn warn Obama at Cannes Film Festival.
After hearing quotes from Hollywood air heads stating that when they saw Obama they just wanted to follow him, follow him anywhere, or that they wanted to pick up the paper cups on the side walk to clear a path for him- or the best one- I think that electing Barak Obama would confuse the moderate Muslims who hate America for hating Muslims, its refreshing to hear that someone studied his voting record before endorsing him. Apparently San Penn found some of Obama's votes in the Illinois state Senate as disturbing as I did.

Everyone watch your back, this is a seriously nasty crowd. Puts me in mind of a mccain crowd at an obama rally.

Sean Penn is what our overseas neighbours so aptly describe as "THE CRUDE UGLY AMERICAN".
Why do you feel that you're qualified to spout your personal criticisms of everyone and everything - right and left ? YOU ARE JUST AN OVERRATED ACTOR - WAKE UP AND SHUT UP !

Oh so wrong. The crude, ugly American is epitomized by the bush presidency. Penns view is held by a vast majority of the people of other nations, just try and do some reading. I don't have any idea what got your shorts in a twist but your view here is definitely out of sync.

Actually the "crude ugly American" stereotype is based on the ignorant mannerless arrogant American. The type who would start a war without knowing the difference between shiite and sunni; the type who would say he gave up golf as a sign of respect for dying soldiers; the type of chicken hawk who would taunt "bring it on" as our military faces I.E.D.'s.

Sean Penn is a talented patriot in my book.

Am I painting a better picture for you?

In my mind, smoking when asked not to qualifies as ignorant, mannerless and arrogant. There's nothing rebellious or patriotic about endangering the health of others.

I do not like smokers either. Still, it pales in comparison to invading another sovereign nation on a whim! I would guess that Penn would give up smoking if bush would give up the whitehouse.

Sean's alright-- some times he buys into his own press clippings too much, and gives off the air of a self-righteous blowhard-- but he means well and does put himself in a place to help folks in need more than most entertainers. Canne's likes Penn being the rogue cause it brings out the press and heightens awareness-- he may be acting now, keep your eyes open.

Just got back from the film "The Third Wave" in Cannes, presented by Sean Penn. It was an incredible documentary about a rag tag group of volunteers who went to Sri Lanka 10 days after the tsnami.. They went into a devastated town, stayed for months , and made a huge difference in peoples lives. It was heartbreaking , funny, and truly inspirational! The theme was " Everyone is needed". It's grainy documentation of the aftermath of such tragedy was raw and intimate. The film itself promoted individual participation and humanitarian action when government abandons it's people. Sean was gorgeous and thoughtful and humble. Nothing like this headline. Bono was there and so was Micheal Moore! A beautiful model( whose name escapes me), whose fiance died in the tsunami started a foundation that helped make the film. The group is called happy hearts. They are recruiting people to volunteer in Burma if anyone is interested. Peace to all and
Bon nuit!

I notice how offensive Americans find anyone who speaks their mind and lives their life the way they want to. Without bending over and taking it up the ying yang from the "authorities".

Your all so docile and cowed you really make me sick.

And then you all sit aropund whining on blogs about your liberties being taken away and how the right has taken over the country lock, stock and barrel.

If we had more Penn's we'd still have our country.

I'd rather be an egomaniac if that's what Penn is than a subserviant whining little bitch.

Get some balls Americans.

Sean Penn is the epitome of the self righteous idiot actor. And he can't even act that well-- his only good role was Spicoli.

It takes an American to out-obnoxious the French.

Very few French will be rude to you if you are polite to them. If you are constantly treated rudely in France - it can only mean one thing, you are being rude yourself.

Learn how to say "hello", "goodbye", "please" and "thank you" in French, call men Monsieur and women Madame, and treat people with courtesy and respect. You will be treated very well in return.

I am in Cannes and will go see "The Third Wave" with Sean Penn presiding tonight. I will report in after. Aside from being an amazing actor, he won me over when he got his own boat and pulled people from their rooftops after hurricane Katrina. A bientot!

Many of you seem to not like Sean Penn.

Have you ever considered that he may be a rare example of an authentic human being ?

While no where near perfect.

He clearly says what he means, means what he says.

It is like comparing your poodle to a wolf.

He hasn't been listening to the polls or his public relations people.

No surprise that he evoke such viseral reactions from the neutered class.

Or the gendarmes will all come piling out of one of those funny little boxes on wheels that the French think are cars and they'll git ya....

What else?

Hmmm.

Did I mention he's a great actor?

I PARTICULARLY LIKED HIM IN "THIN RED LINE"...

Where his character sits on a hand grenade and then keeps yelling "I blew my butt off!" until he dies....

I was getting that confused with the movie on the Vietnam war that Penn did with Michael J. Fox. Thanks for the correction. (Why does Woody Harrelson somehow remind me of Sean Penn?)

Sean Penn is a great actor, a talented story teller andhe is absolutely right to say that Obama has some voting record issues. I'm a supporter of Obama, but lets be real, the man has had to make some concessions to get where he is. We watched Hillary and Bill pander to the right and we watched Obama say and do some things that do not exactly align with true progressive values all in the name of getting along. Sean Penn is a true progressive. Study his positions and his work and you would see that. Obama will do fine, he just has to live long enough to see his efforts work.

I admire him as an actor and director but that's where it ends. Many of us don't like
rules and some laws too much, but when you are in a host country, behave.
If you want to act like an idiot, do in your own country. I thought he was an adult?

Just another no talent Hollywood AH. His end will be an OD in a fleabag hotel.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:39 PM on 05/15/2008

what?
such uninformed people being so hateful.
there is no reason to think his end will be anything like that - no reason at all.

you obviously just attack anyone you consider "hollywood", as calling Penn a no talent asshole is just ridiculous... that kind of longevity does not come to those with nothing to offer.
