For the past 18 months, ever since the 2006 elections, congressional Republicans have been like a hospital patient trying to convince visitors that he is not really all that sick: a bit under the weather; actually feel better than I sound; should be up and about any day; thanks for asking.

Suddenly -- belatedly -- all pretense is gone. The Republican defeat in Tuesday's special election in Mississippi, in a deeply conservative district where, in an average year, Democrats cannot even compete, was a clear sign that the GOP has the political equivalent of cancer that has spread throughout the body. Many House GOP operatives are privately predicting that the party could easily lose up to 20 seats this fall.

I am no political expert, but it just seems to me that common sense would show Republican leaders that the majority of the people are not with them. So why do they keep voting against the will of the people?

Did he cry like a baby? Boehner (not Hilary) is a compulsive cry baby.

Americans are being seriously hurt by inflation and unemployment. By November it will be much worse. The Republicans will be DESTROYED!!!

Twenty my ass! The chickens are coming home to roost for the last 7 years. During the last presidential campaign my wife expressed the opinion that in some ways she wanted Bush to win so he would have to deal with the crap he started. Now four years later 71% of Americans disaaprove of the job he is doing (higher than Nixon) and the world respects him even less. His fellow republicans were with him all the way and now they will be left to "answer for Santino" in the words of the GodFather. In this case its the war in Iraq that the GOP will answer for.

I'm not as interested in the House as I am in the Senate. I want Lie-berman ridden out of town on a rail. At least, metaphorically!!

He is toast. The senator from Israel will be losing all of his committee chairs after Nov and will be sent to caucus with the the GOP.

One can only hope that the Democrats will win even more House and Senate seats than expected given the incredible surge in Democratic party registrations during the primary season. President Obama is going to need all the help he can get setting this nation back on the right track and with the entrenched corruption and special interest influence among long-time legislators, he is going to need a Democratic majority in Congress large enough to head off the obstructionist Republicans and those Republicans in Democrat's clothing known as the Blue Dog Democrats.

I actually hears a republican on C-SPAN this morning say he was not going to vote in November because McCain is a liberal. He also said Congress was going to lose seats because they are all turning liberal.

Do these thick headed repubs not realize the Congress followed Bush blindly, did whatever he wanted and that is why they are losing. They do not listen to the people, they only listen to the White House.

They still do not get it.

Vote them all out of office for the slaughter of innocent people in an unjust war against humanity.

The people of the U.S. were and are entitled to defend themselves from attacks from anyone. PERIOD.

The desire to steal someone's oil is not justification to slaughter tens of thousands of people, denigrate their religion, disrupt their political system no matter how different it is from your own.

If the political system of the U.S. was so great, why then did it allow its leaders to go and slaughter innocent people? All of this was done with no compensation for the victims and for no punishment for the people involved with this mayhem.

Charge them with war crimes and reaffirm the Geneva Convention protocols.

I sincerly hope that 20 lost seats is a major understatement of the true outcome in November.

Make no mistake, the GOP does not regret this.

They devastated America like locusts in a wheat field, and they are leaving the ruins for another administration to repair. It will be very, very difficult and cannot be done in one administration. There plan is to blame Bush Cheney Rumsfeld, Inc. ruin of America on the next administration.

The Republican party has earned permanent crippling. Just let it die. D.O.A. Do not feed, do not resuscitate.

They already stole nearly everything. And we let them.

We need more Democrats in the Senate so we can finally dump Lieberman.

Hey, CT. Problem is, Sen. LIEberman is in his seat until 2012. He was reelected for a 6 year term in 2006. I took the train up from NYC to campaign for Ned Lamont and was astonished and disappointed at how uninformed the people were and how few campaigners there were. We had plenty in the Southern part of the state but that was it. It seems as though it's changed now, at least.

That's right - come on, Connecticut - join the party!

I think Joe knows he's in trouble with his own constituents and that's why he's tying into McCain. He just wants to prolong his political career and not have to worry about getting votes, would rather just kiss butt to get another 4 years paid for by taxpayers.

Joe better hope McCain gets elected and can give him a job, because his chairmanship in the Senate is likely over.

Barring some weird, bizarro-world twist of fate - I suspect that the RNC losing 'only' 20 seats is a bit optimistic.

Maybe, but it probably isn't going to be much more. So many congressional districts are drawn such that one party or the other has overwhelming advantage...even more than in these three. And two of these three districts were destinations of many "Katrinites", which lifted Democrats numbers a bit.

Add Roscoe Bartlett (R), Maryland's 6th district to that list of hoped losers Teritt. This is generally a reliable Republican district, but has become more the DC-burbs of late, and this dude is one of Bush's lapdogs.

Ok - let me amend my Prayer:
Dear God, Please let Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback of Kansas, as well as Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland, and especially John Mica of FL be among those GOPers to lose their seats. Sincere thanks, Teri
