Fred Thompson is back! For those of you who missed him when he slipped quietly out of the race sometime in January, he'll be penning a new column on Townhall.com and in Townhall Magazine — and he's also going to blog! Yes it's true, according to Townhall contributing writer and director of operations Matt Lewis: "He will write an exclusive column for Townhall magazine once a month and blog on the site." Lewis also said that Thompson would be blogging on "a new site soon to be launched" but declined to give details. Darn!

We do, however, have details about Thompson's column, which is called "Closing Arguments" (no doubt to invoke his alter-ego-legal-eagle self on "Law & Order"). His first one was posted this morning, and it took him two paragraphs to smack up Barack Obama:

[C]hange - whether it "real change," "bold change" or the "change we can believe in" variety others are selling - isn't itself an innovative policy or a particularly strong leadership stance.

Oh, snap! Thompson is having none of it. He's got a warning for his fellow conservatives: "Now isn't the time for conservatives to be looking for a tailored message or a politically expedient route to victory if the end result is going to be the inevitable slide toward the liberalization and secularization of America, and the growth of government and loss of freedom that inevitably ensues." Stirring!

Thompson's first effort clocks in at a slim 452 words, in keeping with his reputation for, um, efficiency, but Lewis is anticipating that he will pipe up elsewhere on the various Townhall sites "when he sees an area where he wants to weigh in on." For his part, Thompson plugs his new home, saying that he joined Townhall because he saw it as "elevating the discourse" based on his dearly-held conservative principles of "smaller government, individual liberty, standing for common values that have become all too uncommon, a strong national defense and, most of all, an optimism and belief in America." (We're not sure where "a light copyediting hand" fits in there, because he writes about "an acknowledgement [sic] that change in the political arena is inevitable" and uses "them" to describe Townhall Magazine, which is an "it." But it's all part of the inevitable growing pains of blogging, so we welcome Fred to them, and through them.)

Thompson didn't really say much about the campaign, but he did say this: "I'm glad to be back here in familiar territory," which must be surprising for all those who thought he really, really, really loved campaigning. (I mean, he really seemed to like it!).

Finally, the answer to your burning question: What about Jeri? "For now, it's just Fred," says Lewis. "But we would certainly welcome her input. So I guess folks will just have to stay tuned to see..." Hm. We are pretty sure that Jeri is involved somehow.

Okay! I think we've hit all the standard Fred Thompson jokes. But aside from that, nice coup for Townhall — and maybe a wee shot across the bow at McCain, whose sudden environmentalist kick might well qualify as "a politically expedient route to victory" leading to "the inevitable slide toward the liberalization and secularization of America." Guess that dream ticket's out of the question.

Good to see grandpa Fred wake up and join the election campaign.
It would seem that what everybody has said is true....
He is very lazy....The good thing is that he has finally started his campaign for the 2020 election....the bad thing is that he probably won't be around to finish.

Wasn't this cadaverous putz the star of a recent Doctor G - Medical Examiner episode? I don't know how his wife handles the embalming scented after shave this guy wears just to look alive - whoops - it's the money she senses.

What even vaguely intelligent person would have the remotest interest in what Freddie had to say...about anything?

munster needs to get aggressive about what role or roles he can land in the turgid self-aggrandizing heavyweight war documovies to come. charlie wilson's war was the first. an air force general, maybe? sup ct justice would be perfect- but it's not really where the action is. he could be a "senior advisor to the president" in some west wing type slog about big wheels wrestling with historic decisions, maybe. that movie will be made about four times in the next few years.

I love the way Fred Thompson tries to trivialize Obama's "Change" message as not innovative or expressing strong leadership.

I love it because "Change" is the central theme in this campaig and Fred has essentially admitted that he does not want change.

Indeed, if you want the real conservative in this race it is Fred Thompson since he does not want any change at all in foreign policy and when it comes to domestic policy he wants to do away with government programs. He'd get rid of all of them if he could.

I thought Fred would make a good candidate but when I found out where he stood on the issues I thought to myself that this guy is running on a no change platform when the current resident of the white house has a 27% approval rating, an all time low rating, and that signifies that he is utterly out of
touch.

And he knows all about coming up with a winning leadership stance.

Yeah, this guy's popular. Even Nixon called him a dumb or stupid $hit. You're doing pretty bad if you're a Repug and Nixon didn't even like you!!!

How DARE Thompson point out that Obama and Clinton are naive as the day is long??

So, lets just keep repeating adolescent tripe so we might feel less insecure for this minute in time.

If this is indicative of what the Republicans have for fighting Obama in the fall, bring it on. Fred Fudd is about as brain dead as they come.

I don't know whether to be encouraged that he is trying to say something, or to be discouraged that what he has said is hardly worth reading. Maybe with practice he will come up with something a little more enlightening.

I doubt he wrote the column but if he did he would have worked harder at that column than he did at his Presidential bid! lolll On the GOP side the nomination was really about who would end up having to go to the slaughter in November? All the serious players did not even bother to race. Look at the list of patsy they had Huckabee, Rodney, Thompson, Giuliani and McCain. If am missing a tool or two don't hesitate to name them. And am not including Ron Paul because he is not really running inside the GOP.

My theory is simple the GOP don't want the White House for the next four years they looked at the mess and they said. "Lets the Democrats deals with it. That way when they fail we would be in better position to come back stronger!"

But to accomplish this tactical retreat they need a diversion so they could continue war profiteering on the backside! They needed a sacrificial scapegoat somebody who would not really be missed when he will loose in the general election but a serious enough candidate that peoples would not start laughing at the GOP. Serious enough that nobody would say they are trowing the election but not well liked by the GOP insiders that when come November they will not shed many tears at his demise!

Maybe am just parano but Obama might just get a bigger mess than he bargain for when he get swear in.

Thompson is as dumb and even lazier than a stump.

Just what the right needed another Republican to say Democrat Party instead of Democratic Party and call Obama naive. The last laugh will be on all of them when Obama says "Call me Mr. President".

I still laugh at Thompson every time I see him, and I laugh especially at the MSM for their adoration of this guy. Tweety's infamous "aqua velva" man line still makes me laugh. They were all getting behind him. They loved him. He was another empty suit that they could prop up like Bush.

Newsweek even did an article about Thompson called "Lazy like a Fox". The jist of the article was that Fred likes to give the impression that he's lazy, stupid, and ignorant, but in reality, he's an absolute genius and really, really brilliant. Didn't the MSM try that shit with Bush? See where that got us!

They tried it with Brittney Spears too.
