McCain's Burden of Proof

John McCain and Barack Obama have sparred so aggressively over the past few days that those without a calendar in hand might mistake the month of May for the month of October. What began as President Bush accusing Obama of appeasement while in Israel quickly spiraled into a back and forth between the candidates on the value of tough diplomacy. McCain was quick to imply that Obama's willingness to engage his enemies was, in fact, tantamount to appeasement, and suggested that such judgment was proof of his inability to lead.

To the relief of Democrats everywhere, Obama responded in a way uncharacteristic of past Democratic presidential candidates. Where Al Gore may have sighed and released a statement disagreeing, and where John Kerry may have taken to the podium more than a week later, with a long-winded incomprehensible self-defense, Obama instead reacted quickly, forcefully, and in ear-shot of the national press.

Using language he had otherwise reserved, Obama suggested that John McCain's vaunted toughness was phony and "extraordinarily naïve." He swiftly and succinctly tied McCain's foreign policy philosophy to George Bush, arguing that McCain has failed to distinguish his foreign policy vision from Bush's in any distinct way.

The content of Obama's comments was as strong as his tone, which was almost onomatopoetic in its insistence that he too could be strong on foreign policy. "This is what strong countries do," Obama commanded, "This is what strong presidents do... What is John McCain afraid of?"

What John McCain should be afraid of, and what is becoming unmistakably evident from the first major brawl of the general election, is that Obama is not like other Democrats. The playbook that brought praise to Karl Rove does not have the same impact today as it did four and eight years ago. What's more is that, in the argument about who would be the better president, the burden of proof clearly lies with McCain.

Having so intensely wed himself to the status quo, both in terms of policy and posture, John McCain is facing an election in which the policies he supports are dramatically opposed by the public he hopes will elect him. In almost every way, McCain has endorsed the policies of the most unpopular president in modern history, and has done so with the expectation that the voters wouldn't mind. With 81% of the people seeing the country going on the wrong track, John McCain is advocating that we continue full-steam ahead. His only hope is that he can convince Americans that Obama is so horribly unqualified for the job, that they would be better off choosing a man with whom they completely disagree, than the man who offers the vision they seek.

In dust-ups like the one McCain and Obama just experienced, and in the many more to follow, John McCain cannot win such an argument by merely going toe-to-toe. Instead, he has to be crushing, not just painting Obama as weak and inexperienced, but proving beyond all reasonable doubt that this is the case. Having chosen the status quo as his bedrock, the burden of proof lies with him. And when Barack Obama responds, as he did, with grace and strength, with power and an unwavering determination, it will be truly audacious for John McCain to maintain any hope at all.

It's going to be a tough year for McCain, what with a substantial chunk of the Republican Party openly rejecting McCain's foreign policy. McCain's disdain for diplomacy will sink his campaign. Also, where are you going to get the money for those tax cuts, Sen. McCain? Are seniors going to vote for a candidate that wants to eliminate Medicare? Are veterans going to vote for a candidate that refuses to fix the VA or restore the GI Bill?

Agreed. How is he going to win over the ones who are suffering financially, want to end the war, and have those old time religion beliefs, not to mention look at his full force of lobbyists working for him. He's got an awful lot to own up to. Americans are fed up. He can't even make sense to himself, changing his positions as most politicians have always done, trying to fit what he thinks republicans and independents want to hear, instead of being honest and standing for what he really believes in.
He's also been very wobbly on what he calls experience. His experience is being shadowed by his gaffes and his age.

I sense too much confidence from the pro-Obama bloggers. It is dangerous to under estimate the threat of McCain. A bigger concern will be McCain surrogates will attack on all sides, below the belt. McCain will let them take cheap shots, then show up and ask them to stop. Good cop, bad cop approach. But, the below the belt attacks will continue. Do not become overconfident, expect the worst from McCain and continue to prepare to stop him

Believe me we see through his supposed good cop front. He's not believable, and his full force of lobbyists running his campaign is going to be tough for him. If he's so against the whole lobbyist thing, why did he hire so many of them to begin with? He changed his mind now that they all gave him tons of money? How convenient. All you have to do is look at who his money is coming from to figure it out. He's in bed with them, and so is Hillary. That isn't going to change, regardless of what he's trying to make it seem.
And as for good cop, he's already done the bad cop thing himself because of things he has mentioned about Wright and Hamas. He's done like dinner!

How can one win the battle without confidence? If you have a good plan and you have the opponent sized up accurately, there's every reason for confidence!

As a Canadian, like many of my fellow countrymen I've been following the primary contests with great interest, hoping beyond hope that Americans will finally elect a President who will restore the USA's 'standing in the world', as the pundits like to put it.

I don't think enough Americans realize how Bush's "with us or against us" foreign policy adventures have alienated the rest of the world, friends and enemies alike. We stood at America's side after 9/11, sending troops to Afghanistan (where we continue to do more than our share of the heavy lifting) although we, rightfully, declined to participate militarily in Bush's Iraq invasion. For the latter action, or lack therof, we were roundly criticized by our American allies and relations between our countries went into the deep freeze. Hardly the way to treat one of your closest allies and largest trading partners.

Watching both Clinton and Obama, I think many Canadians look at them and think "Now THERE'S somebody we can work with." I have no doubt that people in countries around the globe feel the same way. No more cowboys in the White House, please. The world has had quite enough of gunslingers.

Obama is going to BURY McCain in the debates they will have during the GE. McCain has no idea that he is the wrong person at the wrong time in the wrong country.

Swiftboating is telling the truth. These guys had a real beef against Kerry.
The concern from McCain is that his surrogates will Fabricate lies about Obama.
Don't underestimate how low the McCain tribe will go. Be prepared for the worst.

I can't wait for December so that this whole mess will be over. It is disgraceful.

Those swiftboaters were paid for by republican neocons. Those swiftboaters needed money and were jelous that Kerry had made a good life for himself while they were poor.
The neocons bought the swiftboaters, the swiftboaters were paid servants of the republican noise machine.
The swiftboaters would have said and done ANYTHING in order to collect money.

Would that it were so, would that it were so, would that it were so.

I just hope that Obama can continue to show his inner toughness without turning into someone who looks like a bully. He did really well when he took on McWorse, and I hope he keeps on keepin' on.

Just stating the fact.

Hence, just move on.

"Obama is not like other democrats". What a crock. He is exactly like them. A well educated man that has to toe the line on certain issues regardless if he believes in them or not.He is a liberal, social progessive, period. The dems are riding high on the "change" bumper sticker mentality. I still think the dems are four years from taking the whitehouse. The liberals have invaded our education system, stood behind the illegal imigration problem , which vote dem more often and thru the breeding habits of people who are a liability to this country, the dems will eventually destroy this great country. Please continue to be over confident, the real conservative Americans in this country are still a formidable foe and will not go quietly into the night. God bless the U.S. and the world..

Your boy Regan was the biggest perpetrator of "amnesty" just so you know, this decision "appeased" Hispanics to feel this country really was welcoming them in. No amount of Clinton deflection and lies will overcome this inconvenient fact.

Pro-business conservatives have been as pro-immigrant as liberals, only a moron would try to deny that.

Please tell me what IS a REAL CONSERVATIVE in 2008 America. Are they small government? Really??

Democrats have a vision, Republicans just articulate a nightmare.

Relikx- Reagans biggest mistake, one we haven't learned from.
Pro-business people who embrace the illegal immigrant should be fined and or jailed.
We need to push for smaller government- the way to do it is to get rid of all entitlement programs that are being abused.

"The liberals have invaded our education system" ???

Did you see the report about the number of science teachers that believe in Creationism?

I'd say it is the conservatives who have invaded our educational system.

Hi Marlyn, Creationism is not the problem. Darwins THEORY of evolution is.Why do you think the NEA is so against teaching both sides of the story? Maybe because one talks about God? The theory of evolution has so many holes in it.
The liberal view has made schools a non-competative social event instead of a learning environment where the teacher is in control.

I will respond with one of my favorite segments on television:

Santos: It's true. Republicans have tried to turn liberal into a bad word. Well, liberals ended slavery in this country.

Vinick: A Republican President ended slavery.

Santos: Yes, a liberal Republican; what happened to them, Senator? They got run out of your party! What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican Party? I'll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did Conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, 'Liberal,' as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work, Senator, because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor.

BL- you need to check your facts here. These programs were passed by both sides.I'm talking about today. The democratic party of today is not like the party of old.liberals have high-jacked it.

The dems are the king racists. They corner the market on the black vote, but never do what it takes to help them, just keep giving them everything and keep them as your dependent. They are equal and don't need your "guiding Hand". Racism is for fools.

I don't know how we can break this to you. Liberal is no longer a bad word. And by the way, you wouldn't know a liberal if one showed us and kissed you on the lips.

If it weren't for liberals you would not have a 5 day work week, Social Security, Medicare and other safety nets in place so that you didn't have the unfortunate possibility of watching your fellow true blue Americans die in the streets.

And p.s, you wouldn't know a conservative if you saw one either. Your Republican party has conserved nothing. We are more in debt and have a bigger governmenth under the bunch of hacks you just voted for twice than ever before.

When you have an hour or two, sit down and read a history book. You might learn what the terms you throw around so carelessly mean.

I agree. True conservatives are horrified by what has become of the GOP since the Neocons took over. They have moved to the Democratic Party and call themselves PROGRESSIVE. As a result the Democratic Party is split between TWO FACTIONS, progressives and true liberals.

Actually, McCain's only hope, and we've already seen early evidence of this strategy (see, "Well, Obama SAYS he's not a angry extremist black elitist radical Muslim, but how can we be sure?"), is that enough more rednecks will hit the polls in opposition to a black man becoming president than people who care abou the direction of the country.

IF I WERE NOT PLANNING TO WRITE-IN RON PAUL IN NOVEMBER,
I WOULD PROBABLY BE VOTING FOR SENATOR OBAMA, AS HE TOO,
HAD THE WISDOM TO BE AGAINST THE INVASION OF IRAQ, WHILE
THERE WAS STILL TIME TO PREVENT IT.
I WORRY, THAT SENATOR OBAMA WILL WANT TO REDISTRIBUTE
U.S. DOLLARS AROUND THE WORLD. WE CAN'T AFFORD IT....
AND PLAIN AND SIMPLE... IT'S INTERNATIONAL SOCIALISM.......
WE SHOULD NOT BE A SOCIALIST COUNTRY. CHARITY BEGINS
AT HOME. BUT I AM OTHERWISE, VERY IMPRESSED WITH
SENATOR OBAMA.

We are in the currently midst of the largest transfer of wealth out of the US in the history of...wealth. Almost every dollar spent on oil goes out the door and a lot of that revenue is funding both sides of the various middle east conflicts that are also consuming vast quantities of our nations wealth (no to mention blood too). Trade deficits are staggering. Jobs going overseas are taking money directly out of our economy and funding the explosive growth of China, India and other places at the expense of our own economic well-being.

Ron Paul has some good ideas but Obama doe too and also has a good chance of winning. Please don't throw your vote away.
