According to some observers, Sen. Barack Obama faced the prospect of a cool reception during his speech Tuesday morning at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual policy conference. After receiving a massive ovation upon entering the crowd's view at the Washington Convention Center, however, the newly crowned presumptive Democratic nominee for president apparently felt comfortable enough to meet any residual doubts about his record on Israel's security with a touch of humor and a boatload of specifics.

Referencing chain emails filled with what Obama described as "tall tales" regarding his positions on Israel, the Illinois Senator asked AIPAC delegates to let him know "if you see this guy named Barack Obama, because he sounds pretty frightening." He proceeded to tell the audience that he would speaking from his heart, and then hit a series of specific pro-Israel positions that brought the crowd to its feet several times.

And then he got a hand from the next speaker: Sen. Hillary Clinton. "Let me be clear, I know that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel," she said. "I know Sen. Obama shares my view that the next president must be ready to say to the world. Our position is unchanging, our resolve unyielding, our stance non-negotiable. The United States stands with Israel, now and forever."

While Clinton studiously avoided referencing Obama's surge past the magic number of delegates needed to cinch the Democratic nomination, she took up the cause of defending him against criticisms Sen. John McCain made during his speech to AIPAC on Monday. Her response to McCain was explicit in a way Obama's was not, perhaps due to his attempt to respect the gathering's non-partisan spirit.

Clinton, however, had less to worry about in terms of alienating a group that was much more familiar and comfortable with her brand. Clinton told those in attendance: "Let me underscore that I believe we need a Democrat in the White House next January. ... President Bush has moved us in wrong direction." Referencing McCain's "strong rhetoric" from his speech to the conference on Monday, Clinton told AIPAC that the Arizona Republican's policies would weaken America and Israel's security, "making the Middle East a more dangerous place."

Chief among his own pledges, Obama said he would "never take military action off the table" in defending America's interests or those of Israel. "Do not be confused," he instructed the crowd. He also called on Egypt to cut off the smuggling of weapons into Hamas-controlled Gaza, described the return of Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah as a priority of U.S. policy, and said he would never "compromise when it comes to Israel's security." He also identified Jerusalem as Israel's capital at the end of any two-state solution.

Still, Obama sought to draw contrasts with the Bush administration, and by extension John McCain. The presumptive Democratic nominee noted that he had opposed holding elections in the Palestinian territories in 2006 with Hamas on the ballot -- a stance that drew cheers. Obama also said he would not wait until the "waning days" of his presidency to press for Israeli-Palestinian peace, an implicit rebuke to President Bush, who is seen as having contributed too little too late to that negotiation track.

When Obama invoked the Hebrew phrase "tikkun olam," regarding the need to "repair this world," a large whoop of cheers went up from young AIPAC staffers who had been herded around the press area -- perhaps to make certain the media heard loud praise for Obama. If their placement and volume was calculated, it turns out AIPAC need not have been so concerned.

A sustained round of enthusiastic applause from the entire conference followed Obama as he left the stage and shook hands with more than three dozen AIPAC board members that were seated behind him -- an elaborate process that was projected onto the hall's eight jumbo monitors. Each previous speaker at the conference, by contrast, only air-kissed and shook hands with those board members conveniently seated on the aisles behind the podium. But for Obama, the individual attention was perhaps a necessary and appreciated touch.

I saw Obama give the speech on tv, and of all the speeches I've seen of his, this one seemed the most presidential. I was really impressed---and I agree with the bulk of his position.
I don't imagine Syria, Hamas, or Iran's president were any too happy with it, though.
Too bad, who cares, not me.

We cannot afford a hawkish position towards the Middle East, especially regarding the disproportionately handled Palestine.

Good thing he wasn't hawkish. Stating that you are willing to use military might to defend an ally and your own interests is not hawkish, it is realistic. He isn't citing those nations as part of the axis of evil, but he isn't giving them keys to the white house either.

East Jerusalem is occupied, according to international law, and the 200,000+ Jews who moved there in the past few decades qualify as settlers who, under article 49 of the fourth Geneva convention (regarding the illegality of transferring civilian populations into occupied territories) should not be there.

Does anyone know where I can get the entire video of his AIPAC speech? I can only find bits and pieces and bad video camera recordings. Thanks.

Haven't seen that, but I ran into this:

Shows what the candidates say to this Q:

Should Israel continue to receive the current level of military and economic aid from the U.S.?

There will be NO peace deal if Obama's stated position on Jerusalem becomes US policy. The Palestinians will negotiate away a lot of things including the right of return (the Beilin-Rabbo plan did just that), shared water rights, and border adjustments, but they won't give up the Dome of the Rock and Occupied Arab East Jerusalem. This statement, if it becomes unchanging policy (which I hope it doesn't) will mean that Obama, like Bill Clinton (who pushed the Palestinians, but not the Israelis), will fail and we'll remain mired in that region for as long as McCain's hoping, 100 years.

can we just wait and see? and have some faith?

I am the furthest thing from an AIPAC fan believe me.. but let's just see how it plays out and not give in to our fears immediately.

Faith? He's articulated his position on Palestine. On his website, on his views on Israel, Palestinians aren't mentioned. Like politicians before him, he's declared that he intends to be servile to AIPAC and Israel, regardless of the persecution they've subjected the Palestinians to. I've supported him since he declared his candidacy. I donated money to his campaign. But as of yesterday's cowardly address, where he repeated that same old song that glorifies Israel and ignores its atrocities, I regret all of that. Change? Hope? Just words echoed with a forceful voice. There's no meaning behind them.

To heck with it...I'm voting for Ralph Nader.

Is it not possible to promise to guaranty friendship and security to Israel, while at the same time guaranteeing justice and freedom to the Palestinians. The United States would benefit greatly if we did this. I am still waiting for a politician who will put the interests of the America first, ahead of any foreign country, including Israel. Until that happens I will not vote for anyone who pledges allegiance to any country but the United States. Also, as a WW-ll Vet I am sick of what we have done since that war.

I've always been frustrated at the US unending tongue bath it gives Israel. We are not the same country and Israel interests are not mine as a US citizen, sorry. I've also strongly felt that Palestinian have gotten such a raw deal. Thanks to the likes of Michelle Malkin and crew Palenstian now equates terrorists. Horrible.

After rearing about Obama joining McCain and Clinton in his oath of allegiance to Israel, guaranteeing a continuation of the Israeli annexations and the Palestinian resistance for the next decade or more, I was going to sit this one out. You reminded me there is an alternative. I will read up on Mr. Barr a little and probably vote for him. Futile i know, but how else to protest ? I do feel betrayed by Obama. I was all for him, no more.

I AGREE THAT THE INTEREST OF THE USA SHOULD COME BEFORE ANYONE OR ANYTHING ELSE. AND OBAMA THINKS THAT HE CAN HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. OBAMA THINKS THAT HE CAN MAKE BIG CHANGES IF HE GETS IN THE WHITE HOUSE. HOWEVER, OBAMA IS HAVING PROBLEMS JUST TRY'N TO MAKE A CHANGE IN HIS CIGARETTE DRUG USE. THIS MAN IS HOLLOWING ABOUT CLEANING UP OUR ATMOSPHERE, AND AT THE SAME TIME HAS A CIGARETTE IN HIS MOUTH BLOWING IMPURE,CONTAMINATING SMOKE INTO OUR AIR POLLUTING OUR ENVIORNMENT. THIS IS TOTALLY CONTRARY TO HIS "CHANGE" THEORY.THIS OBAMA MAN CANNOT CONTROL HIS OWN HABITS, AND HOW CAN HE CONTROL & RUN THIS COUNTRY. HE WILL BREAK UNDER PRESSURE PERHAPS BECAUSE HE NEEDS SOME NICOTINE. THIS DESECRATES HIS OWN "NEW CHANGE" POLICIES. EVEN GEO. W. BUSH QUIT DRANKING ALCOHOL & USING ANY TYPE DRUG. OBAMA IS TOO WEAK TO SO.

Obama gave up smoking a year ago. His wife Michelle joked then, "you tell me if you see him smoking." I prefer people who are out front about their addictions, like Obama, than those who hide them. And after you're done judging in capital letters, consider the fact that no one is perfect. What a boring world it would be if everyone was.

Right on Checkmoot. Are you voting Libertarian in November? Bob Barr is USA first. Not a whore for AIPAC. This country is so uninformed and in the dark, it may take generations before the masses wake up. That's assuming the country even survives that long. Good grief.

If there is any common policy among any US politician who wants to make it, it is their unyielding pledge to support Israel, regardless whether Israel is right or wrong, or whether it is for or against the interest of the USA itself. Israel 1st, US 2nd. To the extent that the US will fight wars on behalf of Israel.
Shame on you Obama.

What a tremendous contrast between the Bush/McCain team and Obama.

Every time Bush or McCain or one of their spokesmen opens their mouth, the whole world groans, and wishes they would just go away peacefully.

The more Obama goes on the world stage, the more we are assured that intelligence, competence, and morality will be coming back into fashion.

It will be wonderful to be able to listen to the news and not have to cringe over the latest lies and insanities coming from the Republicans. How long do we have to wait until the inauguration?

AIPAC is more powerful than the whole US govt.

If he can't please them he can't be elected, apparently.

While I personally support Obama, there should be more coverage of his frankly incredible comments to AIPAC about a future settlement to the Palestinian question. Obama insisted that Jerusalem must remain the undivided capital of a Jewish state - a claim which is not only rejected by the international community, but which even the Israeli government has conceded to be impractical. Obama's transformation from cautious commentator on international issues to pro-Israel hawk has been astonishingly quick. I've always been a bit sceptical about Mearsheimer and Walt's claims about the influence of the "Israel lobby" in American politics, but I am beginning to be won over.

AIPAC's influence is indeed shocking. Obama's STATED position (which may change once he's in office, I hope) of supporting Israel's so-called 'right' to annex Occupied Arab East Jerusalem is a travesty. I'm hoping this doesn't stand and it's no surprise at all that there is muted media coverage. They're all afraid to say anything. You want any real news you have to go elsewhere to independent media like the Nation or Democracy Now. Or you can watch CNN and/or Fox and listen to talking heads dissect all the easy things to tackle like Obama's preachers, Hilary's gaffes or McCain's flipflopping. This single issue is that important though. It's why we're spending 100s of billions. It's not the degree of the human rights violations (Sudan's worse). It's not that this is the only case of an occupation and annexation (Tibet and others situations exist). It is, rather, an issue of American support. All the other cases we might back dictators for natural resources or look the other way, but with Israel we BLESS their actions and give them money and weapons. Now, just the hint that the Iran might be arming Iraqis gets peoples' blood boiling in this country (even though there's zero evidence to support Iranian involvement ). Imagine how the Palestinians must feel when they get bombed and see pieces of shrapnel that read "made in the usa"? We're on the wrong side and now, it appears, so are all of the candidates.

Nukemind, I totally agree with everything you said. Our only hope is that Obama was simply trying to showcase some Jewish "credentials" in front of AIPAC. But that would be problematic in itself - for Obama has always claimed to be a different politician. A politician who can play it straight and tell the American people the truth about what's going on in the world (as opposed to Bush/Cheney style). Yeah right. Oh well. We almost had a good thing going there with Obama for a while. I'll probably still vote for him, but it will be half-hearted. I guess I can go back into hibernation now for another 4 years and awake in 2012, as there will be no progress in the Middle East. Unconditional support for Israel will be this country's downfall.

So telling that all of the Presidential candidates go to the Aipac conference and pledge their allegiance no matter what Israel does. Israel can continue to expand illegal settlements, ignore the Iaea's Non Proliferation Treaty, and numerous Un Resolutions and they still support Israel at all cost.

The most amazing thing about all of this aipac ass kissing is that it is taking place even though former Aipac officials Rosen and Weissman allegedly passed on classified intelligence to Israeli officials that has undermined U.S. national Security. And Aipac is the vehicle that they used to access and undermine. This investigation and trial (five times delayed)has not been covered by the MSM at all. If Rosen and Weissman had been spying for Ireland the MSM would have been all over it.

Obama and Clinton may not have noticed but many Americans are sick of these lopsided policies. Many want Israel to stop with the illegal settlements get back to the 67 border, share Jerusalem and the water rights, sign the NPT treaty and play the game the way Israel demands their neighbors play. Sign the NPT treaty Israel!

Obama and Clinton are dealing with an organization (Aipac) that participated fully in the undermining of U.S. National Security.

well let's face it..if he doesn't get AIPAC's seal of approval he cant win.

AIPAC matters more than the popular vote, more than the Super Dels, more than anything.

They have the money, and the power, and deliver the RT wing Jewish votes.

They completely suck and they are unAmerican. yet they get to be the king maker.

That's the way it is rt now folks.

Hopefully not always. And the Israeli peace movement is not dead either.

I have hope that things will change!

Cathleen, you are more informed than 99.5% of the voting population in this country. Sadly, I don't think we have a great choice when it comes to political AIPAC ties. Clinton and McCain are the most entrenched when it comes to AIPAC loyalty. Obama is not nearly as beholden to AIPAC as most mainstream candidates are, and yet the words coming out of his mouth are startling. Hopefully, he's just saying this stuff to show his Jewish "credentials", and has no intention of letting AIPAC control his Middle East policy. But who knows? I guess the best we can say for now, is that Obama is the lesser of three evils in regard to AIPAC's hijacking of US foreign policy in the Middle East.
