Update: Obama and Lieberman had a heated conversation on the floor of the Senate later today. Details below.

Senator Joe Lieberman, serving aptly as John McCain's foreign policy attack dog, jumped on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday to rip holes into Barack Obama's stance on Israel.

Playing off of Obama's address to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the Connecticut independent acknowledged that he hadn't heard the speech -- and urged for a "civil and constructive" presidential campaign -- before taking Obama to task for not being consistently tough on Iran.

"I appreciate many of the very good intentions to Israel and Israeli security that Senator Obama expressed today," said Lieberman. "I thought in the speech there was a disconnect between things Senator Obama said today, particularly in regard to Iran, and things he has said or done earlier either in the campaign or the Senate."

The crux of Lieberman's argument, however, was that Obama was putting the blame for Iran's rise in the Middle East on America's doorstep, pushing the argument that the Iraq war had strengthened Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's standing in the region and left Israel less secure.

"If Israel is in danger today it is not because of us foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way," he said. "It is not because of what we have done in Iraq. It is because Iran is a fanatical, terrorist, expansionist state and has a leader and a leadership that constantly threatens to extinguish the state of Israel."

The remarks fit into a traditional GOP rallying cry, that the Democrats have a blame-America-first mentality. But there are outstanding factors that could muddle Lieberman's message. For starters, most objective metrics indicate that Iran has, in fact, been strengthened by America's involvement in Iraq. Ahmadinejad, after all, has increasingly meddled in Iraqi affairs.

But also, McCain, despite tough rhetoric on Iran, has several advisers with deep connections to the country; perhaps the most embarrassing of which is Charlie Black, the campaign's chief strategist. Before leaving his perch as a D.C. lobbyist, Black represented a Chinese oil company that did business with the Iranian government. He and his firm also represented Ahmad Chalabi, the Iraqi exile who helped churn up support for the war in the United States and has subsequently been accused of selling U.S. secrets to Iran.

UPDATE: Roll Call reports:

Furthermore, during a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange.

Afterwards, Obama smiled and pointed up at reporters peering over the edge of the press gallery for a better glimpse of their interaction.

Obama loyalists were quick to express their frustration with Lieberman's decision and warned that if he continues to take a lead role in attacking Obama it could complicate his professional relationship with the Caucus.

Almost no foreign policy expert agrees with Lieberman. In the NSFP community, there is almost unanimity that weakening Iraq, as we have done by knocking off Saddam, removed the counterweight to Iran that was the centerpiece of US foreign policy for 30 years.

The Senator from Israel, Joe Lieberman, doesn't understand even basic geo-political facts.

Do you suppose that Lieberman will have the last laugh on Jan 20 2009? It's anyones guess at the moment. This election is the Democrats to lose. Sad to say, not an uncommon outcome if history is any guide.

seeing the posts on here explains why I refuse to call myself a democrat and why I rejected the republican party. We have got to stop pooping over people who disagree with us. Obama showed an excellent example of face to face communication that is inspirational.

I challenge all you folks who are pooping all over Lieberman to stop the judging and keep clear heads. he will be part of Obamas cabinet next year. Mark my words.

Lieberman is a good man who is backing another good man. He may be wrong, and may be using poor tactics that will backfire on him, but he is still a good man.

I am sorry, but lieberman is NOT a good man. he continually (as both a democrat and as an "Independent" ) continues to endorse a war that's only purpose is too enrich the military manufacturing companies and brokers in this nation and in Israel. He claims to be a moral person yet uses that slow Elmer Fudd type speech of his to promote some viscious and hateful lines of politics (not he least of which is Rev. Haggees mission to have Israel populated to supposedly bring on the rapture).that bring the worst parts of religion into the political dialogue. He is an evil and corrupt politican, everything that is wrong with american politics today. I don't say that because he disagrees with me , many good americans and people do, he just isn't one of them.

Liebermann is nothing but an imprssionable, pathetic boy wonder who initially proclaimed himself a democrat simply because he was too stupid to figure out what this political party actually stood for. Now, he wants to push Bush's agenda for a forthcoming invasion of Iraq's next door neighbor.

I wonder how the good people in Connecticut, who voted Lieberman in office feel about all of this PANDERING he is doing to win points with Republicans?

The sad part is that he trying do it under the fact that he is Jewish, and only he knows what is best for the Middle East following the Bush Administration and now McCain leads.

The last time I look, I think the Middle East would rather have some peace in that region, so that it can grow and have prosperity without unending wars and terrorism for all of its citizens.

I'm from CT and worked to help get Lamont on the ticket. With the endorsement of Obama and the Republicans that is how Lieberman got elected. Obama stood up for Lieberman and actually came to CT to help Lieberman. He never came to CT to help Lamont once he got the dem nomination.. The Rep candidate was a joke, thrown in there for the sacrifice... Republican were told to vote Lieberman.. First you have Obama saying Lieberman is the better choice then you have the Republicans saying we want him back vote for Lieberman.. in 2006 An endorsement for Lieberman is a vote for the war in my book.

Yes, I have been saying that for years. He would be a marvelous repub. LIE Berman is a disgrace to the Dem party. The fact that he did not step aside in CT for Ned Lamont was outrageous. The people in CT now have buyer's remorse. Enjoy your choice, people.

Why would he step aside for Lamont? Clearly his constituency didn't think he ought to step aside either.

What leads you to believe that the people who have been reelecting him for 20 years are having "buyers remorse"?

Voted Against the bill to raise minimum wage 8 times

Refused to go back to Washington on Thursday to Vote to give Women Rights For Equal Pay on the same jobs as MEN (Said they need more Training) Women are you really listening?
The bill sought to counteract a Supreme Court decision limiting how long workers can wait before suing for pay discrimination.

Voted against Equal Pay Law ; the right to give Women the same pay as men because and the President said it would cause Women to file Lawsuits. Funny they did not think if Employers would not discriminate in the pay scales there would not be a need to file a lawsuit. Sounds like Sen.McCain and the President expect Employers to keep paying women less for the same job.
NEW ORLEANS " Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.

To all those Democrats who say they will vote for McCain in the fall let me just say this; I understand your passion for Sen Clinton but to cast a vote of spite towards en Obama would be punishing your children and grandchildren and denying them the freedoms we have previously fought for. A woman's right to choose, our right to privacy and civil justice, our rights as workers, consumers and global citizens. I urge you to give this a thought.

And also in doing so ensure in the meantime, the continuing assault on our civil liberties and the Constitution and the loss of Roe v. Wade. No support for equal pay for equal work. The furthering of tax cuts and economics designed to enrich the wealthy and corporations. The continued lack of an alternative fuel policy or any kind of progress in environmental issues.

When people say 'how bad could it be if McCain was elected?' They need to look at how bad things are with Dubya now. How bad things were with Reagan, and back then the Dems even controlled both Houses and yet they alone couldn't get stop the dangerous dismantling of things like parts of the Glass-Stegall act, the deregulation of industries oh and the trillions of dollars worth of debt, more than any President before him, combined.

I agree a two-party system isn't ideal and it would be great to always be able to vote for a candidate one likes, it remains that voting against the Democratic is effectively voting FOR McCain and in doing so, helping keep this country on the destructive path it has been under the likes of Republicans. So yes at this time, one throws their vote away when voting for people like Cynthia McKinney and are so are part of the problem, not a solution. Sometimes one has to pick the lesser of two evils and be pragmatic. McCain is the greater of two evils, period.

As to Joe Lieberman making a fool of himself; That ship sailed a long time ago. I believe that he would throw his Mother under the train if he thought Israel would gain. Try being an American first Joe,because you have already lost your credibility as a Senator, as a Democrat, and as far as I'm concerned, as an American. Get off of Obama and stop pretending to be an Independent/Democrat. Joe Leiberman is pathetic and no one is buying him anymore.

in 2006 Obama came to Hartford Ct to endorse Lieberman. I was working the Lamont campaign at the time. Obama felt that CT should vote for Lieberman at the time. He said something along the line of how honest and good Lieberman is, to put him back in DC to work for us... I HATE Lieberman, and an endorsement for Lieberman was an endorsement for the war. That is how I saw it at the time. I cannot get passed it. Obama probably wasn't present when Lieberman made all his remarks about the war and Bush, along the same line as not being in church and not knowing what Wright stood for.. You see, I cannot trust Obama. I want a dem in the white house, but I can't bring myself to vote for a man who campaigned and endorsed Joe Lieberman...
