About Jason Linkins

Jason Linkins is a Political Reporter at the Huffington Post, covering media and politics. He's based in Washington, DC. Previously, he wrote for HuffPo's Eat The Press, and has also contributed to DCist and Wonkette.

In what Wonkette calls "the most tragically awkward video in the history of YouTube," a dazed McCain campaign manager Rick Davis stares goggle-eyed at off-screen cue cards, robotically making a call for Americans to stalk their neighbors with video cameras, and reveal what secret Islamofascists might be walking among us. The lucky winner will be flown to the Republican National Convention to enjoy a session of "Seven Minutes In Heaven" with Larry Craig at the Minneapolis airport, and then it's off to Guantanamo Bay!

This contest, by the way, is the "true story" upon which the Liv Tyler thriller The Strangers is based.

Does anyone suppose the good folks of Hartford, Conn, will be submitting a video of--say--good citizens helping a hit-and-run victim?

What's wrong with that dude's eyes? Couldn't he just pretend not to be reading cue cards? Geez...how pathetic was that! Plus the whole idea is lame. Encouraging people to film their neighbors may not be the smartest thing to do.

What a great idea!

I'll submit the video I took June 3 of Barack Obama!

A truly selfless individual devoted to bettering our lives as Americans.

But do you really want to go to the Republican National Convention? That's akin to: "Congratulations! You sunk the half-court shot for the prize: a root canal without anasthesia."

once again.... they are playing the patriotism card..... no meat with their platform.... so just creepy requests to get people to go to their site.... is his candidacy a game show?

This is the kind of mischaracterization that gives the media a bad name.

"McCain's Campaign Manager Announces Contest In Disturbing Video"

As I understand it, this isn't a contest in disturbing video, it's a contest for videos featuring people who are selfless in their acts. Geez.

It's tongue-in-cheek, Pilgrim. Not meant to be taken literally.

There is so much truly scary aspects of the McCain candidacy that we don't need to make up stuff about Repubs "making a call for Americans to stalk their neighbors with video cameras". That is not what this contest was about. Actually, the idea is very nice. I agree, his delivery and the camera angle looking up his nose is disturbing, but there is nothing wrong with the rest of it.

Let's try to be better than the competition here folks. If you want a youtube competition that is real and is funny, check out Steven Colbert's new green screen challenge to try to make John McCain's last speech interesting.

"As Stephen mentioned on last night"s show (see clip above), when Republican Presidential nominee John McCain addressed a crowd in Kenner, Louisiana on June 3, he did so in front of a green screen, thereby issuing a bold challenge to Americans to make him seem more interesting."

I dont get it. where does he ask for them to check on people or islamofascists. I mean if obama campaign had done this we would all be cheering that true heros among us would geta chance at being at convention . not just elected dlegates and superdelegates...

I'll bet a lot of good republicans will be trying to win that seven minutes with larry craig at the Minneapolis airport, and you know a lot of them would welcome a trip to Gitmo for some chicken and rice and some waterboarding sounds like the perfect place for a republican.

The video and concept is lame. But the only thing disturbing is Wonkette and HuffPo's hyperventalating reaction to it. Nothing to see, move on.
