Defense Department counterintelligence investigators suspected that Iranian exiles who provided dubious intelligence on Iraq and Iran to a small group of Pentagon officials might have "been used as agents of a foreign intelligence service ... to reach into and influence the highest levels of the U.S. government," a Senate Intelligence Committee report said Thursday.

A top aide to then-secretary of defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, however, shut down the 2003 investigation into the Pentagon officials' activities after only a month, and the Defense Department's top brass never followed up on the investigators' recommendation for a more thorough investigation, the Senate report said.

What about the secret intelligence unit of the pentagon that Bush/Cheney made up because they did not like the official pentagon intel units findings? Anyone else remember that? There were what, 5 to 8 Bushy loyalist who made their own intel "judgments" and that was what Bushco used as their facts. And 99% of the Bushco facts were completely different from the official Pentagon intel facts. What happened to that little group of so called "experts" that fabricated the info for Bush? That would be an interesting follow up story. But the sad part is, nothing will come of Bush and company for what they have done, and they will continue to use their devious ways to influence policies around the world and here in the US. People idolize the most evil of the evil, and Bush/Cheney and the Neo Cons are just that.

Oh boy, its the new scape goat for Bushco. I guess this story will be used to help justify the Iran Invasion when that starts??? By they way, didnt they blame Chalibe and later on 8 ball for the Iraqi Invasion? I guess since those didnt fly they are really reaching for anything, and as they want to invade Iran , this must have looked like a great idea to them. Well I dont buy it. Even if someone from Iran did feed them false intel, they wanted to hear it so they did not bother to check it out. They welcomed the lies IF that is what happened. But I doubt it is.

My first thought was they are looking for a way out of the mounting claim that they just plain lied, and had the whole thing planned out since 1998.

Usually the first thought is the right one, and I haven't seen any reason to change my mind yet.

We should be very concerned about what will happen in the next few months, considering this report I came across today. The information is from Daniel Pipes, who's Director of the Middle East Forum.

The Senate committee also found that Pentagon officials concealed the contacts with Ghorbanifar from the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the State Department. Pentagon officials also provided Senate investigators with an inaccurate account of events and, with support from two unnamed officials in Cheney's office, continued meeting with Ghorbanifar after contact with him was officially ordered to stop.

In the 80s the U.S. supported Saddam and Iraq in their war with Iran and the Ayatolah Khomenieh. Almost 20 yrs. later, we remove Sadamm from power and hold free elections in Iraq, the Shiite majority win the elections and control of Iraq. A very forseeable outcome. The Shiites have close ties to the new Ayatolah, who was a follower of the Ayatolah Khomenieh. So basicly , we did for the Iranians, what they couldn"t do for themselves in the 80s.

The Iranians thank Bush...TWO OLD IRANIAN NEMESIS's wipe each out and allow Iran to seize the moment and momentum...(who really did NOT pay attention to the details in the run up to invade Iraq and the consequences which were rather a real "given" especially with Chalibi being a main contributor of "intel/incentive" ...he was KNOWN to have close Iranian ties, summered there and yet he was designzated to become the first Iraq PM/leader...like how stupid is our helm ? HOW TOTALLY STUPID and how costly and yet NONE have yet to beheld actually accountable while WE, the mere ordinaries pay the dire consequences of THEIR MISTAKES !!!)

Ignore the headline and the summary, and read the McClatchy article more carefully.

As tempting as it always is to portray the administration as incompetent imbeciles, it's become their strategy to portray themselves as stupid victims of bad intelligence in order to get away with the lies they told in order to take America to war.

The headline aside, the article says the Senate report portrays these Iranian agents, not as enemies of the administration at all, but as co-conspirators involved in crafting the administration's fabricated rationale for war.

Read the article:
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/40080.html

Evidence shows Douglas Feith, Newt Gingrich, Sam Brownback, and Rick Santorum linked to fabrication of bogus intelligence on Iraqi WMDs, produced by Iranian agents working WITH Dick Cheney's office AGAINST orders from the Defense Intelligence Agency, the State Department, and the CIA.

Iranian complicity in the administration's effort to drag America to war in Iraq goes hand-in-hand with the ugly irony that Halliburton has oil field and pipeline contracts in Iran. The war is little more than outrageously over-played corporate strategy to create exactly the chaos and catastrophe that has resulted from this gross, immoral adventure, only to gain the commercial upper-hand.

They weren't victims of bad intelligence. They cherry-picked the intelligence for information that would support their already decided course of action.

There was a school of thought well prior to 911 that Brother Chalabi had very close ties to Iran.

But ignored by those who find facts inconvenient to their delusional ideology.

It is definitely a tangled web that's been weaved if the chronic failure of intelligence suffered by the Bush administration is betting on Americans also being victims of cognitive impairment if they believe that these on-going pathetic fabrications - now suggesting that their disappointing intelligence is the fault of Iranians superior wit - are going to be continually accepted at face value. Can an entire administration be sociopathic?
