The first of two parts:
Pt 1 How McCain Can Win the White House
Pt 2 How Obama Can Win the White House

In a talk with reporters in Louisiana, Republican presidential contender John McCain implored disgruntled Hillary Democrats to back him. His pitch was, I'm the toughest, most knowledgeable and most experienced on national security. The unmistakable inference is that rival Obama is too green, fresh, and untested to gamble with on national security. McCain's aim was to lop off disgruntled Hillary Democrats. But it also staked out what he must do to win the White House.

The terrorism issue is still a McCain election trump card. Many Americans think there could be a terrorist attack on American soil at some point in the future. Those who think that are susceptible to McCain's pitch that he can best defend the nation's security and with America under mortal danger from a terror attack, that it's risky to change to the Democrats.

This isn't enough. McCain must duck the economic mess Bush made by pushing his economic plan that calls for lowering the corporate income tax rate, more tax breaks for business, and making Bush's tax cuts permanent. Though it looks a lot like Bush's plan, McCain can spin it his way with the standard GOP line that his plan is pro-growth, in contrast to the shop worn tax and spend Democrat's approach to growth. This still has tremendous reverb with wide segments of American voters.

He can claim that his plan will save homes from foreclosure, spark business growth, and create more jobs. He can remind voters that Reagan economic policies sparked the economic boom of the 1980s and his updated version of supply side economic policies is a mirror reflection of Reagan's. This gives him the hook he needs to boast that Americans will reap rewards with his economic policies.

McCain must openly and subtly stoke middle and working class workers' disdain for liberal solutions to problems. Only a minority of American voters call themselves liberal. The Republican's repeated smear of the Democrats as tax and spend, liberal big government proponents still strikes a chord with millions of voters.

McCain must contest the Latino vote. His name has been mentioned countless times in the Spanish-language press and most of the time the mention was favorable. Many Latinos look benignly on him because he broke with the GOP's hardliner stance and backed immigration reform along with Senate Democrats.

McCain doesn't have to top or even match Bush's total with Latinos to push the Democrats. All he needs to do is get a quarter of the Latino vote in the key Western swing states of Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, and that might be more than enough to move the states to the GOP camp--again. Even before Bush's massive court of Latino voters in 2004, they gave Republicans a quarter of their vote and in some places such as Florida did far better .

McCain must stress that the Iraq war is not a totally losing proposition for Americans. A significant percentage still think a change in strategy, tactics, and direction in the war can if not bring victory at least bring a satisfactory peace. McCain will have a parade of generals, defense experts, and the defense industry to help him sell that position to millions of voters.

McCain needs a fractured Democratic Party. Exit polls in the bruising Clinton and Obama Democratic primary battles showed that the bruises are firmly tattooed on some fervent Clinton backers. Nearly a quarter, mostly blue collar, rural, and non-college educated whites, said they would vote for McCain or stay home if the nominee were Obama. And since he is the nominee, if many mean what they say, McCain is the big winner with them.

The historic nomination of an African-American as the Democratic presidential standard bearer is applauded by many publicly but privately it raises doubts even dread among many others. McCain can't and won't stoke those racial fears. He doesn't have to they're already there and that's a campaign plus for him.

Then there's the issue of how many voters turnout for the Democrats and the GOP. Much is made that the Democrats scored near record turnouts in the number of voters and registration in their primaries in the winter of 2008 and that Republicans lagged way behind. Yet, in fairly recent presidential election history there was lower turnout and seemingly less enthusiasm in the Republican primaries in the election battles of Bush Sr. and Reagan. Both were still elected.
The variables that work for McCain against Obama are the war on terror, a victory spin on Iraq, the experience factor, the voter's inherent fear of an untested candidate, the strong tradition in millions of households of voting for GOP candidates especially among male voters, a bickering, divided Democratic Party, and the X factor of race.

McCain can and will exploit these variables (race more subtly) on the campaign trail. He can win the White House with them.

"The variables that work for McCain against Obama are the war on terror, a victory spin on Iraq"

This statement is absurd. Perhaps you should stop reading David Brooks and Bill Kristol - FYI, they're full of shit and wrong 125% of the time- but who's keeping score?

We understand that continuing lies, divisiveness, fear mongering, undetermined, unending wars, will be the policy direction of McCain. However what you failed to point out, that in order for McCain to win, Americans, en masse, must allow the insanity to continue. I would bet against that and against your statement, 'that will allow McCain to win'.

Why doesn't McCain use endorsements from leading right wingers in his ads? Here are some.
------
Neil Cavuto of Fox News, Feb. 6, 2008: "I'm also hearing a lot of people are waiting for Senator McCain to snap; for him to do something crazy and that just as he's on the verge of winning this, he's gonna go, you know, kinda like a Norman Bates deal."
------
Michael Reagan talks about the "huge gap that separates McCain -- whose contempt for his fellow humans is patently obvious -- and my dad, Ronald Reagan."
-----
Rush Limbaugh said McCain threatened "the American way of life as we've always known it."
------
When told McCain was an independent, Glenn Beck replied, "Well, so is Dr. Frankenstein."

Everybody in pundit land wants to analyze this race in the context of ancient history. When Bill Clinton ran for president in 1992, there was no such thing as the World Wide Web, and his unfamiliarity with this brave new world of YouTube and blogs was plainly evident in the former president's underwhelming performance on the campaign trial. Times have changed, and the conventional wisdom is struggling to catch up.

McCain's awfully performed and unfortunately staged "green" speech demonstrated that, when it comes to 21st century politics, the McCain campaign just doesn't get it. They're trying to figure it out as they go along, reminiscent of our strategy in Iraq. The only candidate that seems to have approached this election cycle with an accurate read on the political and media landscape is Barack Obama.

When he launched his campaign message at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner in November featuring at its core the idea that his candidacy is not about him but about us, he claimed a mantle that's ultimately more important that "change". He became the candidate that believes in the American people and our capacity to solve problems, territory that Democrats often cede to the GOP.

This isn't the year for a candidate that claims to know how to solve our problems or the candidate that stubbornly insists that the majority of Americans are wrong on several issues. This is the year for the candidate that has thoroughly internalized the idea that the solution to most of our problems involves millions of people doing small things rather than our government doing big things.

One interesting aspect of the primary campaign is that Obama was considered the more conservative Democrat before he was the more liberal Democrat. If the Republicans want to set the bar at challenging Obama to prove he's not a Marxist, then they are going to be in for a surprise when they realize that the only overtly left-wing aspect of his candidacy was the demographics of his primary coalition. They're running against inverted Reaganomics, where good judgment starts at the bottom and trickles up. It's an incredibly empowering ideology that is essentially the polar opposite of socialism and will be extremely difficult to defeat.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. We would not be close to financial colapse if it were not for the war in Iraq. The two go hand in hand.

McCain talks about tax cuts and more tax cuts. McCain says he will never surender in Iraq. Who is going to pay for the war debt? The answer could be a lower standard of living for all including the rich.

Our elected leaders should be very wary of Communist China. Russia is energy independent awash in oil and natural gas. What these two nations have in common is support for Iran. If McCain were to bomb, bomb, bomb Iran as he joked about doing, I believe China and Russia would do something to assist Iran.

McCain is irrelevent. The election will be a referrendum on Barack Obama. The campaign will be one where Obama will attempt to reassure voters about himself, and the Republicans will attempt to prevent Obama from doing that.

Just be McSame and spin like you're not? Run the same Rove playbook of fear-mongering, Latinos, split Dems and tax cuts?

Oh, Ofay!

Your analysis is as tired as your prose. Your grasp of what will sell with the voters is as weak as it was when your were telling us Barack couldn't beat Hillary.

Anyone who truly wants to see what McCain can do to change the complexion of the campaign should read:

I am a lifelong Democrat and had the privilege to be chair of the Hardin County Iowa Democrats. I understand now what Ronald Reagan meant when he said "I did not leave the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party left me." I agree. I have officially endorsed Cynthia McKinney, a black woman, of Georgia to be President of the USA. Other Democrats and Republicans equally disappointed in the DNC and GOP are joining now with McKinney.

Paraphrase of Arthur Ide, 'I understand now that Reagan said when he said the DP left him.'

Really? The DP went nuts and did leave Reagan, me and other Labor Democrats. The differences between Reagan and Walter Mondale were as wide as an ocean. The differences between Clinton and Obama proved beyond a reasonable doubt are sex, skin color, and personal integrity.

Identity politics have not worked well for Democrats. Carter ignored them, Clinton ran away from identity politics. Clinton used identity politics deliberately attempting to drive up Obama's negatives in hopes of making him unelectable. Did she succeed? Maybe. But she also made herself unelectable.

It is time for identity politicians to retire to Politically Correct Acres and let the Democratic Party move forward being about the USA and not about a bunch of angry entitlement hounds.

Goodbye, Arthur.

Obama and McCain are both losers. For a real change you can depend on, vote Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party and the war will end, the economy revive, and America's tarnished internationa reputation will show a new luster. Neither Obama nor McCain can restore unity within the United States of America, for it is too raw and too badly fractured to ever heal and be one nation again.

How Obama can win in November? I have to think about that. What can he do to win over older
folks, older women, Clintonites...you need time to pass so we forget these intense days. I guess
Obama has to grow on us. Maybe if he spells his name O'Bama people will think he's Irish (which he partly is, by the way, on his mother's side). (That was a joke).

God I love Hillary! What a speech. Except for all the nonsense about electing Obama President. I could tell she didn't feel those words. It sounded stupid saying "we must elect Barack Obama President". Assinine.

You couldn't really love Hillary, since you are willing to torpedo every issue she believes in by voting McCain. She's better off without "supporters" like you.

I read this article as Hillary was delivering her farewell speech.
I have to be honest with myself, and with all you kids one third my age. I don't like Obama. I can't relate to him. I LOVE HILLARY. She's the cat's meow! So screw it! I gotta vote for McCain.
Nominating Obama in these troubled times is irresponsible and foolish. Hillary and the Clinton Administration would have brought us back to the steady times of the 1990's. Instead, this goofy
Democratic Party is going with Barry and the kids. Forget it! I'll take my chances with Grandpa the war hero.
Nothing personal.

Personal it is JoAnn. More of the same with more deaths in Iraq, more dollars per gallon, less folks educated due to ballooning cost in college, and more in desperation. Some America that you want. Hillary loses and the best alternative is McBush....I think not.

YOU LOVE HILLARY?????? I will never understand how anyone can say they love a politcian, especially as one as slimy and conniving as Hillary Clinton. Politicians whether they be mayors, senators or even presidents are employees of the people. As such you are doing them and the rest of us a huge disservice by stating unequivocally that you love them. Your love for Hillary obviously has clouded your judgement and allowed you to forgive her even when it is not warranted.

Your love for Hillary will allow our sons and daughters to continue dying in Iraq, will allow McCain to continue to stack the court with anti choice judges, contnue the status quo regarding health care, the military industrial complex, energy policy and every non progressive item on the conservative agenda. Your love for Hillary old person is putting my children at risk and the rest of us less secure. Apparently you are just as selfish as Hillary, Bill, and George W. Bush. Congratualations.

Nothing Personal.
