Tim Russert's round table of square minds marked the end of Hillary Clinton's campaign with a summary parsefest, but the NBC correspondents' knowing chat was curiously distant from the primary tenor and content of her concession speech.

The money quote Russert selected from Clinton's Saturday speech was the same money quote that the other networks selected: "Life is too short, time is too precious, and the stakes are too high to dwell on what might have been. We have to work together for what still can be, and that is why I will work my heart out to make sure that Senator Obama is our next president." NBC's David Gregory called her speech "gracious... graceful," adding that "she hit all the right notes."

But with all attention on atmospherics, the heart of Clinton's speech slid out of view. On Saturday, what Hillary Clinton dwelled on was her--and her Party's--objective of "deep and meaningful equality-from civil rights to labor rights, from women's rights to gay rights, from ending discrimination to promoting unionization to providing help for the most important job there is: caring for our families."

The American electorate is frequently heard to say that they don't know what the parties or candidates stand for--and here was the second-ranked candidate stating most articulately a Democratic worldview: "Being human, we are imperfect. That's why we need each other. To catch each other when we falter. To encourage each other when we lose heart. Some may lead, others may follow, but none of us can go it alone. The changes we're working for are changes that we can only accomplish together. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are rights that belong to each of us as individuals. But our lives, our freedom, our happiness, are best enjoyed, best protected, and best advanced when we do work together."

Which, of course, did not keep the roundtablers from parsing just the politics. Andrea Mitchell acknowledged that in February, when journalists "were focused on her comeback in New Hampshire, the real story was that, behind the scenes, [Obama's people] were coming up with this plan for Super Tuesday that the Clintons didn't have. The Clintons were focused on the big states." Obama, she said, mastered the fieldwork in small states. "The field operation that Barack Obama put out there was so far better than anything that the Clintons had." Chuck Todd made the parallel point that "the biggest myth of this campaign was that somehow the Clintons controlled the apparatus. They didn't." Even before the campaign began, he pointed out, the Clintons were so far from controlling the Democratic apparatus as to have witnessed the rise of Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi--neither of them cogs in the Clinton machine.

All hands emphasized how Hillary graduated from Tuesday's non-concession to Saturday's graciousness, with the pithiest explanation coming from Mitchell. To Russert's question, "What happened between Tuesday and Saturday?" Mitchell deftly replied: "Charlie Rangel."

But then it was off to the colorful electoral map, the usual speculation about prospects in red and blue states, the giddy prospect of an electoral college tie, and the sort of gaseous gobbledygook that puts the e back in empty, not least this aperçu from Ron Allen, who covered the Clinton campaign for NBC News: "The issues are clear, the candidates are clear, and that's why I think it's more likely than not that there'll be a--the electorate will go one way or the other." Ya think?

I watch a lot of C-Span, Washington Journal in the morning, PBS at night. The REAL news is definitely out there - just not anywhere in the MSM.

The punditry population has exploded in this election season - and it's to the benefit of each of their wallets to keep it going with nonsense "brawls" and "battles" and "smackdowns."

The really tragic thing is a LOT of people buy into it. I have a friend who is actually considering not voting for Obama because of the lapel pin thing.

Thank you anyway, Tim Russert, for having a show without David Brody, your go-to reporter on all things "Christian." I really do appreciate the respite.

I wonder when those reporters will tell the public about Gordon's extramarital affair and how his famous daddy helped him keep it a secret. Gordon is now in that seat of power, gifted with the same special powers as his daddy! The next generation of faithfuls will be bilked by the next generation of frauds and reporters do not care.
Do you think Russert will ever ask his go-to Christian CBN reporter how his bosses have such superhuman abilities AND are free to break God's Commandments while they tell us who God is angry with because WE break His Commandments? I guess adultery is not a sin for the son of Pat Robertson, a strongman and a patriot and a descendent of royalty and a faith healer and a self-proclaimed holy prophet of God Almighteeeee who punishes us with terrorist attacks and terrible storms when he is angry over OUR sins.
I have to laugh, otherwise I would cry. The very people who should be working to expose frauds are the ones who give them a platform and a golden opportunity to build integrity and continue their lies, bilking people whose faith is genuine but who are so gullible.

I am thankful for small miracles. Russert did not have his pretend-Christian CBN reporter on to tell us what real Christians are thinking. David Brody works for a millionaire con artist who helped his fake holyman son cheat on his wife and continue their money-producing on-air "healings" and "words of knowledge." Russert's favorite go-to Christian reporter must have been busy this past weekend with Fox or CNN instead.

Todd Gitlin did an excellent job illustrating how unprofessional, arrogant and irresponsible the traditional media is using the example of the "reporters" (I prefer to call them stenographers) of Meet the Press.

Our democracy depends on the reporting of the facts, of the truth, but the stenographers report the spin and the impertinent, the entertainment, the gossip, the tittilation, the fluff.

Clinton's speech spoke about the Democratic goals and dreams for America; on Meet the Press, the story was of the horse race. This important struggle for the helm of the United States of America is to be decided by the flag pins and glibness of the candidates, not by the content of their character.

All I can say is, the traditional mainstream media needs to step aside and let the grown ups report the stories and by grown ups I mean honorable intelligent people like Todd Gitlin.

I dunno. I feel like what you're saying, Mr. Gitlin, is nothing that isn't obvious. I know your credentials, and maybe I'm missing something here, but I expected more than this from you.

I've heard of how often Hillary uses the pronoun "I" in her speeches compared to Obama who uses it less frequently. Just going from memory, I don't really recall noticing Bush using "I" that much. So, would that mean he is less self centered than Obama?

The self-absorption evident in the (lack of) character of many in the media is absolutely astounding. Russert, Abrams, Will, Gregory and Matthews, as well as talking heads on other channels, are indeed in love with the sound of their own voices and have bought into the hype that their opinions move the masses. The public needs to hold their feet to the fire and call them out for selling their journalitic souls for access to those in power. I've watched with more than a little disgust their insistence that Obama NEEDS Hillary and it makes me wonder who's agenda they're truly serving.
Only Olbermann is worth watching. His show is often hilarious and when the situation is called for he has the guts to act with the courage of his convictions.....something we see too rarely in the media today.

have but one assumption to make in the rattle 'n rolling in their verbalage that Obama MOST LIKELY NEEDS HILLARY, in order to get those 18million (which again, question the math when was 17.4 but rounded UP guessing for drama sake..) Those were supposedly 18million DEMS or those crossovers/indies that preferred a set of supposed issues rather than staying a course with the likes of McBush...so WHY would they then NOT go with the party's choice, who thou second to their preferred, was declared THE NOMINEE and who holds the same on the ISSUES ? Why would you vote against or refuse to support someone who will adhere to issues in a way one prefers ? Makes little sense and can but figure, they need to fill airtime...TG it is summer, basic weather nice and other things to be occupied with and no need to stay indoors glued to the tubeviewings and smart ones know enough to ignor the other forms of 24/7 access as well....Summertime this year, no living ALL that easy but ah, we can enjoy a goodly portion of it elsewise and not have such muddlings muddling into our political landscapes...time enough for that come the fall, so in the meantime...ledt the sunshine in and relax and relish the lazy, hazy days for a month or two or three !!!

I just finished listening to Dan Abrams ('cause I was too busy making muffins). He is so painful. He can't understand why everyone is upset about her speech on Tuesday and he is hysterically trying to promote her as VP choice. What I'm trying to say is, Abrams make Russert look pretty good.

I so agree, for years I have tried to figure out why this man is popular. When he testified in the Scooter Libby trial he was a total wimp.

Thanks for the reminder. I thought the speech, all of it, especially when she did define the ideals of Democrats and the Democratic Party, was great. That is the part of the speech that should be repeated at the Democratic Convention and also by Barack Obama on the campaign trail (with credits to her).

I have no love for the Clintons, but I was moved by her speech.
