In the latest issue of Avenue magazine — a "glossy, lifestyle magazine that chronicles the lives of Manhattan's affluent and socially powerful" — Maria Bartiromo warns the New York elite that a vote for Barack Obama is a vote for higher taxes (via Page Six):

He's going to take the capital gains tax at 15 percent right now all the way up to 25 to 28 percent," the "Money Honey" tells Avenue. "Sell anything, like a home or stocks, and make a profit . . . [almost] 30 percent of the profit will go to the government instead of 15." The income tax is also in for a bump. Bartiromo says, "Right now [it] is 35 percent, Obama wants to take that to 39 percent . . . We're talking about people who make over $200,000. That's not rich. So it's actually going to impact more people than you may think."

"We're talking about people who make over $200,000." ???

WRONG! We're talking about people who make over $600,000.

By what stretch of imagination is $200,000 a year not rich ? Since when is it morally acceptable to have people earning the least in society to be paying a higher percentage of their income in taxes than the richest in said society ? All this talk for all these years about keeping the money that "you" personally earned is total bunk. No one earns money "all by themselves". We live in houses built by someone else; drive cars built by others; eat food picked by workers earning less than the minimum wage of years ago; and expect the electricity to keep flowing 24/7 so that we can pontificate (for the benefit of many others) about keeping "our money" to spend on "our" designated luxuries.

Rescinding the tax cuts of the past eight years is not "raising taxes". The more money you make, the more taxes you are able to afford; it's that simple. Reversing the equation to put the financial onus on the so-called "lower classes" is only made possible by catering to "fear itself". Yeah, I'm a New Dealer and no neocon, fiscal conservative, family-values proponent, Armageddon shouter, or childishly evil axis of Republicans has ever offered a better working plan for the U.S. than the one initiated over seventy years ago by the FDR administration.

A rather ambiguous reply; please clarify what you're calling "bunk".

Maria, tsk tsk,... I don't know anyone that makes 200k per year, not surprising considering i'm just one of the huddled masses, but you have discredited yourself here in an absurd manner, we all know your crowd must be rich but you are kicking alot of folks with your twisted perspective.

She's right that $200,000 a year is no longer rich, but it still affords an income that allows those earners to be more contributory, so that our society doesn't decay into something that will kill them someday.

Hey I have a great idea that's never been tried-- how about if the f'ing government let US keep the money we EARN instead of taking it from us and pouring it down the money pit that government is. Our tax money is horribly wasted on programs that do not work, on bloated projects and on earmarks making the POLITICIANS rich while we keep contributing.

We keep our money, we spend the money we keep, and the economy roars... isn't that basic econ?

My God....

Get off your a$$es and work and be successful, people- and stop looking for handouts.

Then we should roll up the roads and bridges, fire all the police and military, close the fire stations and schools...forego nasa and the many discoveries from that program, end international and corporate welfare..etc. Geesh just go back to cave living so bands of roving liberals can come get you!!

Shut up dummy

No shame; no regrets; no apologies; no disguising of right-wing bias - How long are we to suffer the empty-headed, mouthy, conservative proclamations of such "news anchors" as Ms. B ?

When Bush moved to cut the capital gains tax a boat load of rich folks took out full page ads saying it was bad economic policy. Bill Gates included as I recall.

Rich folks are a little embarrassed by the degree to which they have benifitted under Bush.

...and the treasury is empty.

Damn right you rich folks gonna see a tax hike.

Personally, if I made 200K a year, i would save $100K - so the extra 8K taxes would be meaningless.

Get real! Taxes MUST BE RAISED! How many billions have we wasted on Iraq?

How can Americans expect or demand further tax cuts when the nation is over its head in debt??
