If you don't happen to be a fan of toxic attack ads, especially ones directed at ancillary campaign figures, today's Los Angeles Times holds some depressing news. More are on the way! And, as an added bonus, the Times predicts that Michelle Obama, spouse of presidential nominee Barack Obama, figures to be a prime target for Republican vitriol.

The candidate's wife drew the attention of critics while on the stump in Wisconsin back in February, where she said, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country." That statement provided the grist for a raft of attacks, and, as the Times warns, it's one of a host of issues that "show[s] no signs of going away."

But the Times finds at least one figure from the opposing side of the field that isn't too fond of the idea of savaging Michelle Obama for her misstatements, GOP message guru Frank Luntz: "It's wrong. It's attempting to demonize someone who is very smart, very accomplished, but not totally tuned to the dangers of political discourse."

But while preying on those who lack the rigorous training in political politesse and protocol may turn Luntz off, it is an often used tactic is the levelling of a cheap attack. The same methodology was in play on June 6, when radio host John Gibson assailed an Obama supporter who had called in to defend the candidate:

GIBSON: Well, wait a second here. I mean, are you saying that because Barack Obama's got ideas for the country, anybody who doesn't agree with him is trying to tear this country down?

CALLER: No, I said that you're trying to tear that man down, not this country, trying to tear this man down --

GIBSON: Well, I don't -- Thomas, I don't like his ideas.

CALLER: Say that?

GIBSON: I don't like his ideas.

CALLER: Well, OK, that's fine. Everybody don't like everybody's ideas and stuff. But, this man from what I'm seeing, what I'm hearing, he is trying to accomplish something -- from what I hear and what I see, trying to accomplish something that no one else is, and all I can hear is everybody tearing him down.

GIBSON: All right. Well, Thomas, listen to his foreign policy plans.

OBAMA [audio clip]: Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending. I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems. And I will institute an independent defense priorities board to ensure that the quadrennial defense review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.

GIBSON: All right, Barack Obama is against a missile defense system, which only yesterday tested again successfully and is really our only protection against somebody like Iraq getting a missile and firing something at us -- excuse me, Iran. So, Thomas, what exactly do you like about his foreign policy position that he just enunciated?

CALLER: Well, I could really barely -- I could barely hear what he was saying, actually. [unintelligible] I could barely hear what he was saying. So, I can't -- I don't really know too much about that.

GIBSON: Well, I mean -- but that's the point, Thomas, isn't it? I mean, when I say, look -- I criticize Obama over his friends, [Rev. Jeremiah] Wright and [Rev. Michael] Pfleger and [Rev. James] Meeks and the terrorist bomber and, you know, sidling up to [Louis] Farrakhan and stuff like that, somebody like you, Thomas, will call me and say "Hey, deal with the issues." I start dealing with the issues, I ask you about it, and you haven't dealt with the issues. You don't know what Barack Obama stands for. You just like him because he's -- he's -- he's like you and you want to see one of you up there, and you don't care what he stands for. Is it OK if I care what he stands for?

Now, surely it is not shocking that there are many citizens who become attracted to a candidate for reasons that are more or less superficial - a gut feeling, a general sense of inspiration or confidence - or predicated on a single issue such as abortion or taxes. Gibson likely does have problems with Obama's positions on the issues, and he may even so dense as to believe that this exchange constitutes "dealing with the issues," but the fact of the matter is he got to his criticism of those issues in a palpably sleazy way, hanging a caller out to dry on the slim matter of missile defense systems, and thus painting Obama as a political figure who inspires nothing but vacuity.

And, sadly, these tactics can be effective, or at least provide enough of an illusion of efficacy that political bag-men can't wait to indulge. The Times says that Tennessee GOP spokesman Bill Hobbs was "stunned and delighted" by the opportunities that Michelle Obama's Wisconsin remarks presented. They leapt at the chance to turn it into an ad. And they clearly didn't pay any heed to the philosophy of Frank Luntz, reasoning that if Michelle Obama was going to promote her husband's campaign, she was going to be a target of attacks.

So, it would seem that Margo Channing's famous admonition to "fasten your seatbelts" is the one to heed as we plunge into what could be a long, dark campaign season. But take heart, and substantive pushback, from this reality - everytime a Bill Hobbs-type runs an ad akin to the one that assailed Michelle Obama, remember: they do so because their own ideas and candidates have so few selling points. And let's face it, it's much cheaper to fling shit than it is to polish a turd.

M'cCain & Repubs really want to run against Hil'lary. And Hil'lary really wants back in.

That's the reason to go negative like this this early. In the days leading up to the convention, they will *hint* that there is "even worse just around the corner".

At news from the RNC head tonight that they're going to start going negative against both Ob'amas any minute, M'ark P'enn said that he advised Clin'ton to do it even harder, about Ayers and Rezko.

Ann Kornblut reports that Hil'lary has been busy calling SDs since her speech. Why?

It seems these types of attacks are made to reinforce the idea that Obama is unAmerican. His pastor, his wife, his associates, have made comments that are now are being used as examples of his disdain for his country. These ads read "Beware". Sort of a back-door fear mongering.

Stoking racial fears, and all kinds of negative campaigning, suppresses the vote. It keeps the voters most likely to vote for Ob'ama (the young, the newly registered, registered independents) home.

The GOP will be wasting their time and money. They've only got that one quote of Michelle Obama's which was said months ago. She's been on the stump quite a lot in the months since then, and you can bet dollars to donuts, that there were people working for Clinton, GOP people, as well as the media, taping her, looking for anything that could be taken out of context, and used as a gaffe. . And they haven't found one because Mrs. Obama like her husband, is a very quick study. She's clearly absorbed the lesson in national politicing, and won't make that type of mistake again. They can't keep bringing up the same quote for five months--in a country with ADD like ours. Yawn.

In addition both Laura Bush, and Condi Rice have defended her on that "really proud" comment, so it's already been defused. All the Dems have to do is show the clip of Laura Bush saying it was misconstrued. Checkmate!!

If it's ok to go after Mrs. Obama, then one would assume that it is equally ok to go after Mrs. McCain as well. I say if that's the case let's put them up next to each other for a comparrison. Mrs. Obama brought herself up by her bootstraps and achieved her success by herself, Mrs. McCain, well, not so much. Let's talk about the differences between the hardworking mother of two to the drug use and drug theft of the privlidged Mrs. McCain, who started a medical charity and then stole her prescription drugs from the supply cabinets meant for charity.

I think this is an argument that the republican side will handily loose. Working Mom who made her own oportunities and worked her butt off for her future or the rich entitled vapid rodeo queen drug ussing theif. HMMMM. Mrs. McCain is just as fair game as Mrs. Obam as she has taken to the spotlight in support of her husband as well.

Do they really want to have this fight?

I sincerely hope that moderate republicans and independents are smart enough to lean towards Obama to spite McCain and the party he represents for these cowardice practices.

Somebody tell me PLEASE, where are these so called family values conservatives boast about?

The purpose of negative campaigning, and particularly the over-the-transom racial slurring, is to suppress the voter turnout, and foster a sense of isolation among Ob'ama supporters.

Educating the electorate only goes so far because this kind of politics reaches the voter where it's hard for outsiders to reach: His psyche.

One solution, not the solution but one of many, is to get more people registered to vote. And then make sure they get to the polls on election day. Go down to your county registrar of voters, pick up a bunch of blank applications and in the course of your day ask people if they are registered to vote. Get them to fill the application out and you bring it back to the registrar.

Voters in America have no clue. They fall for swiftboating ads, sentences taken out of context,
etc. we deserve what we get every time since abortion and religion tops all the major problems
we have today but the average Joe has no clue. Things like Obama is a muslim fits the majority
of uneducated masses and they get to vote!

Well, attacking the candidate's spouse can easily become simply a matter of desperation or cowardice, or an effort to deflect attention away from the attacker's candidate. It's just Republican slime 2.0

The way to remedy this is to change American politics and get the spouse the hell out of the process. Take a page out of Europe's book.

Of course some of the criticism of her is unfair (and sorry, some is not), but it's also begged for by all of you desperate to put her forward as First Lady, which is a ridiculous and anachronistic role.

Let's hear from the one we'll vote for, and send his family back to do whatever it is they do, which isn't giving speeches in their own right. If you send someone out to make political speeches, then they become a political target. She can't be Surrogate #1 one day, and Mother Theresa the next. Choose.

So, are you suggesting that calling her "Obama's Baby Mama" and intentionally editing snippets of things she's said to make her appear unpatriotic is a reasonable way to approach her as "part of the package"?

That's fine if we don't want spouses or children to campagn. I'm all for that.

However, please don't try to argue that the Republican party isn't jumping all over her :
1. because she's an intelligent, strong woman, and
2. because they are so afraid of the focus falling on McCain

It isn't an issue of fair vs. unfair. How about relevant vs. irrelevant? or Honest vs. dishonest?

I think that if anyone can find a legitimate concern about her, they should air it in public and that se has made herself fair game by addressing the national stage. But, the attacks are just that: attacks They are baseless, irrelevant commentary that has no place in this election. They prove nothing except that the Republicans must be terrified...

The culture clash manifest between Mrs. O's background in her black liberation congregation and white suburban America can only be highlighted by putting her in an overtly political role. The campaign used her as a surrogate on the stump, and she allowed herself to give speeches that went perhaps a little too far beyond the bland niceties that would do no harm. That was ironic, because she was speaking largely to sympathetic crowds to begin with.

The present and coming attacks do betray a Republican weakness, as you suggest, but it's hardly surprising. When you leave the cloistered private sphere that is your rightful sanctuary as a candidate's relative, then you have to be ready for the jabs that come your way. Just ask Chelsea Clinton about the (justified) ridicule she came in for when she went on the stump for her mother and told questioners that their concerns were "none of their business."

The missile defense system is a complete waste of money. It doesn't work and hasn't even had one single realistic operational test. It should be the first item [$11 billion] cut in the 2009 Congress.

Let's see, whom to vote for, hmmmmmm...

The guy who has been a perfect gentleman all along, or the guy who smears the other guy's wife...

Sometimes I think the Republicans are trying to ensure their loss in Nov, having wrecked America so thoroughly it is not fixable.
