WASHINGTON — Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton plan to meet with some of her top contributors next week in an effort to calm donors who remain frustrated with Obama's presidential campaign.

The meeting is set for June 26 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, several top Clinton fundraisers said Tuesday. The former first lady will introduce Obama to her financial backers.

Jonathan Mantz, Clinton's national finance director, notified donors about the meeting by e-mail Tuesday and urged them to attend and to contribute to Obama, who clinched the Democratic Party's nomination on June 3.

Two people closely involved with Clinton's fundraising said the meeting had taken on added urgency after several of her money "bundlers" complained that they felt their concerns weren't heard during meetings last week with Obama campaign officials in New York and Washington.

Both individuals spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the meeting.

Among other things, the donors want to make sure Obama knows that in order to get their help he needs to help Clinton pay down her campaign debt. As of the end of April, Clinton had more than $20 million in debt, a figure that likely increased by the time she suspended her campaign June 7.

Obama cannot use his campaign money to help Clinton with her debt, which includes at least $11 million of her own money. But he can encourage his donors to contribute to her campaign.

The two fundraisers who discussed the meeting said many donors also are furious that Obama's campaign hired Patti Solis Doyle as chief of staff to Obama's eventual running mate, calling it a slap in the face to Clinton and an implicit acknowledgment that she would not be on the ticket with him.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said no inference about the selection of a running mate should be made from Solis Doyle's hiring.

"This was a long and hotly contested fight, so obviously there are some strong feelings about how it turned out and what needs to happen moving forward," he said. "But we're confident that the Democrats are united in their desire to defeat (Republican) John McCain."

Clinton and Obama will meet with two different groups of donors at the Mayflower a week from Thursday. One larger group will include donors who raised $250,000 for Clinton's campaign. A more intimate session will be reserved for about 30 fundraisers who collected $1 million or more.

"The challenge is reaching out to donors to ask them for money for a candidate that they've been on the opposite side of for a year and a half," said Alexander Heckler, Clinton's Florida finance chairman. "However, we have to take a deep breath and realize that we need to all work together and have a Democratic president elected."

Another Clinton fundraiser suggested there was no rift, noting that a vigorous primary contest had just ended.

"The Obama campaign has reached out to the Clinton people," said Hassan Nemazee, Clinton's national finance co-chairman. "I think this is a process that is being undertaken and hopefully we will be in a position to assimilate the Clinton fundraising operation and the Obama fundraising operation together in the near future."

"The reality is that we're two weeks from the day that the last primary was held," he added. "It takes a little while for staff to talk to each other, for lay organizations to talk to one another. It's taken a while to get the candidates available."

Heckler said he has been working with Obama's camp and said he and Obama's Florida finance chairman, Kirk Wagar, have been speaking daily to discuss fundraising strategies.

Separately Tuesday, Obama met in Washington with most members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, many of whom had supported Clinton. Obama acknowledged that he still has work to do to win Hispanic votes.

All the caucus members who attended the meeting pledged to support Obama, according to several members who spoke privately afterward.

Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas said he told Obama he had worked his heart out for the former first lady and would work just as hard for Obama's election.

The thought of Hillary being Obama's VP choice really annoyed me before . . . .

Until I saw him on the stage with his arm around Al Gore.

Suddenly, I REALLY started to like the idea of Hillary, and it allowed my mind to go back - beyond the anger I felt for her actions in the final weeks of her campaign - and think about it. I'm still angry at her outrageous behavior and decisions, but when I take a couple steps back, despite the fact she is married to Bill Clinton - I am beginning to actually LIKE the idea. And, it does make a lot of sense.

Can someone tell me on what basis Obama or the public should believe and rely on anything the Clintons say?

Can someone please tell me on what basis anyone should believe Obama or his surrogates or rely on anything he or they say? Let's just take public financing for starters.

"Both individuals spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the meeting".

See this is what scares me about some of these folks that worked for the Clinton's going to work for Obama, they can't keep their mouths shut. Sen. Obama's camp has had no leaks. I suspect this is why he wants his campaign headquartered in Chicago.

Perhaps you should rethink that comment a bit. His campaign did have "leaks" as well.

It's nice enough to see Hillary round up the troops, but she just doesn't fit on the ticket. She went for POTUS or bust, and it just didn't work out. I'm starting to really like the idea of seeing Barack take Howard Dean for VP. Dean's still got a lot of loyal supporters, some of which have been working for Obama...but what he really brings is that he pioneered the campaign strategy Obama made successful, and he can answer a question in a debate concisely and effectively. Plus, Obama's entire platform rests on one singular concept...and that's ending the occupation in Iraq and finishing the job in Afganistan. The money pumped into those efforts need to be redirected back to the US if Obama's plans for health care and investing into infrastructure and the environment are ever going to be funded well enough.

No, she's not nuts. She needs to wipe out her campaign debt, and Obama is willing to help...

Obama is willing to help because of what comes with the help.

She has a GE war chest worth many millions more than the debt which can be turned over to Obama... plus the donors who will buncle the money and the individual donors.

Those donors should ask Obama to offer Hillary the V.P post. That would please those 18 million voters who supported Hillary.

I'm a Hillary supporter and I do not want to see her as VP. She has too many strengths for that, too many things that need doing that she can do.
There are places she will be much more effective.
BTW, just because the Hillary Haters (and they are still at it I see.) keep pushing the idea that she wants to be on the ticket I really don't think she does.
She would be ambivalent at best.

I'd like to see those donors tell him he gets nothing if he can't find a way to erase the "racist" narrative that his campaign put on the Clintons.

I'm still donating to her campaign as are others in an attempt to help her erase her debt.
She really doesn't want his money and from what I understand she has gone on the record that the 11 million she loaned her campaign she considered an investment and is not including that as "debt."
Basically she wants to get the vendors paid off.
And knowing her, she will.

but how many millions like me would be horrified if Obama were to choose Hillary as his VP? It would be the END of the Democratic Party, for me anyway.

They insult Clinton, by hiring her incompetent, thrown away Campaign manager to work on selecting Obama's next VP, at the same time, asking Hillary to campaign for him to offer her support and $$$.

If I were Hillary, I'd tell them to F*** O**.

Insult of Insults - incredible.

hmmm Doyle was a Clinton loyalist for 20 years, who worked on her White House staff and ran her New York campaigns. I agree she was incompetent, but it sure took Hillary years and mega millions to figure that out. The Clintons like the Bushes put a high premium on loyalty over competence.

Doyle could be Hillary's eyes and ears in the Obama camp, or she could be evidence that she learned well from the Clintons how to be mean, dishonest and vindictive.

Obama is unwise to involve any Clinton insiders present or former for any reason.

ummmm, Clinton is asking Obama's supporters to help with her $20 million debt. I'll be glad to contribute a small amount, but i suspect many others feel the same way as i do. i want to make sure that my donation is credited to Obama's campaign.

Hopefully, the techies with Clinton can set something up on their website for Obama backers who want to contribute.

Oh, I am so thrilled by this wonderful news! Yay to Huffington Post for discovering this story and breathlessly reporting it! I am so happy I could cry, because just yesterday Hillary Clinton was the anti-Mary and now today she is a good person, working for the forces of good. The force has an upside and a downside, now she's got the upside in her favor! She's been turned! Yay, I think that Huffinton Post should take a deep bow for helping her to change her life around and therefore saving herself from a horrible fate beyond imagination.

I think singing will help unify the party. A singalong of joyousness along with some back-slapping and shots will do wonders. If Huffington could arrange such an event it would be another feather in your cap. . If this happens, I would like to join. I can play guitar, and I love to play "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" for singing. I can play it in C or G, but if that isn't going to work please let me know and I will bring along my capo. For the best harmony, as you know, it's best to have it in a good key that everyone can sing!

Well, again, congratulations for the breaking of this fantastic news, I am so happy for Obama, Hillary, and of course the Huffington Post, the shining example of unbiased and uncensored news and commentary!
