WASHINGTON — Former Sens. John Edwards and Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, a congresswoman said Thursday, one day after she met with the team Obama has reviewing possible candidates.

Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, said members of her caucus asked her to forward the names of Edwards and Nunn when she met Wednesday with Obama's vice presidential search team. The team, Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, indicated the two were on the list.

"We've been brainstorming in the Congressional Black Caucus. Former Senator Sam Nunn's name has come up, as well as John Edwards' name has come up among our CBC members. I reported that to them and they had both of those names on their list," Kilpatrick said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Kilpatrick said she made several suggestions during the 45-minute meeting, including former Vice President Al Gore, Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. Gore endorsed Obama on Monday.

"I asked them what type of person the senator is looking for? And they said in general someone who could help him rebuild the country ... talking about change. How we reinvest in America, get people back to work and reinforce our education system and bring the jobs back," she said.

She declined to say which names were put forth by Kennedy and Holder. The prominent Democratic attorneys have been meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to receive feedback on Obama's potential running mate. Obama has said he won't discuss the process until he's made his choice.

When Kilpatrick said Gore was her personal choice, "they had a smile on their face. They have a list of candidates. I think I may have been the first to do that. They didn't say one way or the other."

But she wasn't the only one to mention Gore.

Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, met Wednesday with Kennedy and Holder. A former Clinton supporter, he offered Clinton's name but said he mentioned others, too. Those included Edwards, Sens. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, Gore, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

"These are all good names," Baca said. "Ultimately the decision will be up to Obama."

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who was John Kerry's running mate in 2004, could help Obama appeal to white, working-class voters who largely favored Clinton in the primary and will be a critical voting bloc in the general election. The drawback is that Edwards was the vice presidential nominee on a losing ticket four years ago, while Obama's campaign is about turning the page.

Edwards has said he is not seeking the vice presidency _ but hasn't ruled out accepting if asked.

"I'd take anything he asked me to think about seriously, but obviously this is something I've done and it's not a job that I'm seeking," Edwards said last Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Nunn would bring national security credentials to the ticket, having served as the longtime Armed Services Committee chairman. The former Georgia senator is a member of Obama's foreign policy advisory group.

But Nunn has not been in office for more than a decade so he is not well-known nationally. He is a conservative Democrat who supported school prayer and opposed gays in the military, while Obama tends to have a more liberal viewpoint. Nunn will turn 70 in September.

Other lawmakers who have been briefed say there about 20 names on the list Obama's team has been discussing. The list includes current elected officials, former elected officials and retired military generals, lawmakers have said.

Kilpatrick said most of the names she was asked about were in the Senate.

If Senator Obama is as wise as he believes he is, then there was a heap of good news for him this morning...just in the off case that he was unaware of the proposition.

There is no need for vetters or VP search teams.

If Senator Obama really wants to have the cream of the crop and the best of the best at his side during this general election campaign and throughout what promises to be an extremely diffucult set of challenges that would surely face him during the length of his administration, then all Senator Obama has to do is ask. Of course, this would mean that Senator Obama has recognized that he does not have all of the answers regarding Iraq and that the running mate positon would necessarily come with a new title of Vice President With Special Portfolio on Iraq.

This would also mean that Senator Obama understands that Joe Biden would be the strongest advocate for change and for reversing the downslide of the nation, at home and abroad, with motivations that are honorable and seek only to fulfil the promise of America.

Obama needs a running mate with a military background. Either Jim Webb or Wesley Clark would be good, but Clark would be the stronger of the two.

Clark has impeccable credentials. Valedictorian of his class at West Point, Rhodes Scholar with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, very articulate speaker.

I know a lot of people are going to scream, "but he supported Hillary". This is very true, however if Obama expects to win he is going to need a lot of ex-Hillary supporters.

Obama/Clark '08 (a winning team)

Maybe the hiring of Patty Solis Doyle gives a hint that Richardson is under consideration.

Richardson would be an excellent choice. He is certainly qualified, and could attract Latino voters who seem to have a problem with Obama.

So you think most of America is ready to elect not only a black man, but a black man AND a woman?

As much as I hate to say it, I think that would really be pushing it.

...or Caroline Kennedy or Robert F.Kennedy, Jr. Hell, just about any Kennedy! At the very least, I would love to see RFK,Jr in the Cabinet as Sec'y of the Environment--a new position.

Yeah, all we need right now is a Dem who wants to force school prayer--(your god or mine?) and who is still in small minded hateful denial about the scores of thousands of gays serving admirably and risking their lives in the war zone, ostensibly on our behalf, on a daily basis. Cant we just move forward already? Dont we have any more pressing concerns at this juncture in history?

He needs someone seasoned, experienced with gravitas. Besides having two pretty boys in the white house would be just too much--my heart couldn't take it.

Well then, you've just ruled out Edwards definitely and perhaps even Dean! Doesnt Obama himself have gravitas to burn? In truth, the average American would take glam over gravitas any old day of the week. Honey, you better pace yourself though in this race! Buck up and take some extra Vitamin E and time on the treadmill!

McCaskill would be better than Sebelius but she is a Senator

& we can't risk one vote there. Gore has clearly said no way.

Edwards has pretty much the right stuff with the wrong delivery. His speech just sounds so smarmy. Wish he'd hired a voice coach. He didn't. So probably Sam Nunn would be the better choice. So would Russ Feingold, but no presidential candidate wants someone who might outshine him, and Feingold is very good at reaching people because of his honesty and engaging personality. So: Nunn?

I thought one of the objectives was to avoid taking someone from the Senate and risk losing that seat. Obama's going to need a solid Democratic Senate majority to get things done. The last thing we need is to spend four years in stalemate because the Republicans decide to play hardball. How about Bill Richardson?

Yeah, I wondered why he seems to have fallen off the map? You know, I recently realized that Richardson would be an elegant if crafty choice. This might inspire fear in a few of the wobbly kneed set, but Richardson could bring in enough of the Hispanic vote to offset the racialist white vote that just cant quite muster the cajones to vote for a a half-black person. It would be a masterful end run to the goal post. And Richardson has International street cred up the yin/yang. And I think they have demonstrated some special chemistry when I say them on stage in Portland, OR--born perhaps in part out of the fact that they are both men who are half European American, half "men of color", with similar experiences on race in America.

I still love Edwards, regardless of what everybody says.He has a lot of very loyal followers. There is no way to convince me he is damaged goods or a bad luck charm. And I think his populist angst is just the right touch at this point in our history considering the economic hell most of us are going through...and if Obama is sincere about fighting the corporate robber barons.

I am astonished every time Nunn is mentioned - he was such a Neanderthal in the days of his Senate career. I could never vote for him. Biden (Super Zionist) and Dodd (Mortgage Deal Scandal) both LOST a few weeks ago, remember ? Nobody liked them, why bring them back ? Gore (Smart) doesn't want it. Sebilius WHO ?? From the RED RED state of Kansas, where they don't believe in evolution ? She'll really deliver - NOT ! Richardson thinks you choose to be gay. And no one voted for him, either.

Keep ignoring the serious choice, the one who brought millions and millions of voters to the polls and won all the major states only a few weeks ago. Yep, consider EVERYONE POSSIBLE except her. That's smart.

C-arter suggested Nunn a few weeks back. I totally agree with your points:

Don't ask, don't tell me about Nunn! Absolutely NO.
Biden - NO
Dodd - NO
Gore - doesn't want it, isn't even campaigning for O
Sebellius - Not ready, not a good speaker, not appropriate given the circumstances
Richardson - a lobbyists dream
Webb - NO, misogynist and wants to drill
Hagel - NO and thousand times NO - social conservative
Edwards - UGH, the best of the worst - but a 2 time LOSER and no excitement for me there.

YES, then there's HC - who makes the most sense on every level - imagine if she was VP choice already - dems coming together, she could raise money from her big donors while O kept working his grass roots people - O and H crisscrossing the country together, hand in hand... O and HC both guest on SNL for the funniest skit EVER... HC wiping the floor with Mc Cane's VP choice in debates - wiping the floor with Mc Cane himself... together working towards a landslide historical election, the first AA man, the first woman, history would be made...

POP! Oh, right, no one wants THAT scenario. We'd much rather be stuck with the list above.

I grow more depressed about this election by the day.

I was with you through most of your tirade! Look, for the last nearly 30 years, we've had either a Bush or a Clinton in the top two slots (Prez or Veep)! Are you better off now? This aint no Monarchy or Totalitarian State! And how could you consider someone who, even as a Yale Law graduate could only come up with the failing campaign strategy of trying to ignite a race war, cynically crying "misogyny!" while feigning crocodile tears and blubbering "I finally found my own voice! Boo Hoo!" and playing every dirty trick in the good ole boy play book and leaving her deadbeat campaign 30 mil in debt and now begging for money ..so Twentieth Century!! Would you really want her administering the Death Blow to our economy by running it into the ground like she did her own campaign? Look, the Hill and Bill Medicine Show is dead and buried. A brave new day has dawned in America! For your own sanity, you better let them go!

Take a look at Brian Schweitzer (Gov MT) He is very popular, has a great international background, speaks Arabic. http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/06/on-brian-schweitzer-as-vp.html
has a good review. He looks to be a great possibility, the long name not withstanding.

I heard him interviewed on the radio once--I think it was on Ed Schultz. He was what we used to call back in the day--"A real piece of work!".(In a good way!) Funny, bracing, a very interesting character. He really knows his stuff on the environment and would make for never a dull moment--quite compelling. Not a bad possibility...

Amen! As far as I'm concerned, Dean has been the most compelling politician to come down the pike in the last decade--even more so than Obama! I was heartbroken when the media first canonized, then crucified him over absolutely nothing during his campaign. He still has a huge following. I was absolutely thrilled when Obama kept him on board in his current position. From what I understand, they are Buds from a way back and Dean's model of grassroots Internet campaigning & fundraising was the inspiration and blueprint for the Obama Web juggernaut.Obama knows his (grass) roots! That photo at the head of this story reminds me of what we lost in Dean. I think these two have real chemistry!
