HUGH Hefner has gleefully enjoyed a sexually liberated life, but few know it all started with a little erotic dabbling within the Playboy czar's own family.

In his upcoming book, "Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream," Steven Watts writes how after Hefner wed his first wife, Millie, in 1949, he enlisted his friend Eldon Sellers, who would later help him co-found Playboy, into a staging a foursome.

The book relates: "One night after [Hugh] and Millie watched a stag film with Janie and Eldon Sellers, he suggested that the four of them make love on the same bed, each husband to his own wife. They did and in Sellers' words, 'It was different and exciting.' According to Millie, Hugh began to hint at switching partners, apparently suggesting it with the Sellerses, although the swap never materialized."

Hef then went further, trying a foursome out on his own family. "It did happen with his brother, Keith, and his wife, Rae, one evening," Watts writes. "[But] while Millie ultimately backed out of having sex with Keith, Hugh slept with his sister-in-law."

The book also claims Hef once tried a gay tryst. "Hefner's thirst for sexual experience became so strong that he even had a one-time homosexual experience," Watts writes. "One evening in downtown Chicago he was propositioned and, according to Sellers, he 'thought, what the hell. Found it an interesting experience. As far as I know, the guy just gave him [oral sex].' "

Product Description
When Hugh Hefner quit his job at Esquire to start a magazine called Playboy, he didn't just want to make money. He wanted to make dreams come true. The first issue of Playboy had a Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, an article on the Dorsey brothers, and a feature on desk design for the modern office, called "Gentlemen, Be Seated." Hefner wrote much of the copy himself and drew all the cartoons. But the most memorable part by far was the set of pictures he bought from a local calendar printer of a scantily clad Marilyn Monroe.

In this wise and penetrating biography, intellectual historian Steven Watts looks at what Hugh Hefner went onto become, and how he took America with him. Hefner became one of the most hated and envied celebrities in America, dating a long list of his magazine's beauties and always standing just barely on the wrong side of decency and moral uprightness. He also, at one time, had 7 million subscribers to his magazine. Though in time he would lose readers to more explicit magazines on one side and "lad" magazines on the other, the Playboy brand never lost its luster.

It's hard to know whether to love him or loathe him. Sticking with the gist of the article, I have to say that I do admire him for being sexually liberal. Sexual taboos have always existed to keep people in line, and to give power to others.

I think I would like him so much more if his pornutopia had more inclusion for sexually liberated females as equals and not as objects.

for such an interesting revolutionary man, i just wish i could remember that in his golden years he could at least pick bunnies of some substance. Or maybe I just got the whole point.

Hef has done so much for promoting a healthy view of women as sex objects, and his magazine/empire has helped establish such a great model for young girls to strive towards.

Playboy has championed the world of men buying women, hooray!

Three cheers for Hef's airbrushed, artificial, photo-shopped, antiseptic view of women!

It's a good thing women are viewed as equals these days, and that they receive equal pay and never face any harassment for their looks. It's also a great thing, that in 2008 there are few if any girls with self-image problems, bulemia, anorexia, and obsessions with plastic surgery.

In a just world, he'd be tarred and feathered, just for the Playboy Mansion alone.

Well said, Yellow Panties. The book could easily be called Mr. Littleboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Wet Dream

only wish I could have lived Hef's life for just a mere 6 months to see what it was like. I also admire Hef because, in the 50s and 60's, he was the only true SEXUAL PIONEER in this nation. He helped turn sex from being a taboo subject to recognizing that sex is a natural part of our lives.

Hell, if it were not for Playboy my sexual education would only have been through the scare tactics embraced by most schools, religious organizations, stupid friends and of course my loving parents.

Three cheers for Hef and Playboy.

I've never been able to accept him as a symbol of liberation.
What's liberating about encouraging women to die their hair, have face lifts, liposuction and breast implants so that they can look like Barbie dolls?
When I look at pictures of Hefner, I see a poseur, a predator and a degenerate.
The idea of doing ANYTHING even slightly sexual with him is nauseating.
But then I guess money is a great aphrodisiac for a lot of women.

In the Product Description, this book is described as a penetrating biography.

Well, 'penetrating' would certainly describe Hef's entire outlook on life. Let's be honest. There are very few men who wouldn't have loved to visit Hef's playground even once. And his libidinous lifestyle became a caricature of the response to the 1950's where sexuality was seldom displayed, publicly eschewed and universally desired.

Like most revolutions, the sexual revolution needed a colorful leader to stimulate the masses toward the overthrow of their old sexual constraints and outdated mores. There were certainly reasons to criticize the objectification of women promoted by his magazine and his lifestyle, but often revolutions start with fanatics. Playboy became more sensitive to womens' issues; especially in its non-pictorial content. And he certainly practiced what he later preached when he gave the magazine to his bright, savvy, articulate and (no surprise) very attractive daughter.

Listen the guy is now 82 years old and still loves sex. Hell, he probably doesn't even need Viagra. Of course if I lived in a mansion where dozens of comely young ladies pranced around in bikinis...and less...I doubt if my old libido would forget how to salute either.

Yah, Hef, good for you. The family foursome stuff sounds strange. Were they your cousins or what? And the gay stuff? If you want to take a walk on the wild side, that's your business but some of us would just as soon not hear about it.

But you purposely read the article about his family foursome and gay experience...that was in the headline.

I am sure there was more than one experience. The dude is a swinger. It's just wrong. His whole sexual revolution is gone, and now people are understanding his playboy image is his gayboy image - and the girls are his cover.

Sex sells. Thanks Hugh for making our world a bit more superficial and a bit more decadent.

It's weird. The older I get, the less Hugh bothers me. Life is too short to care about what people do in their bedrooms. He's never been a hypocrite about it.

I'm so jealous of Hugh that I'm going to say something stupid and mean about the man on a forum on the INTERNET! Aw boy that makes me feel so much better, now I feel reassured about my own lack of friends and lovers.

He admitted that he had sex with a man in an interview in the Advocate at least 20 years ago. This is old news that someonw is trying to make seem new and shocking so they can sell a book.

He's disgusting....the girls next door must cringe having sex with their great grandfather. But I guess some people will do anything for a certain lifestyle. No morals, no values, but then it's their life to lead as they see fit.
