When people talk about how MSNBC's Chuck Todd would be an ideal candidate to take over the reins at Meet The Press - and they're out there - it's precisely the sort of balanced, intelligent, and detailed work that he offered up on today's Morning Joe that enthuses them. Todd has served MSNBC well as their go-to "poll whisperer," his keen eye divining the trends and truths that often go hidden amid the hype.

This morning, he lent his insight to some of the recent polls that have Senator Barack Obama staking out a double-digit lead. Todd's big takeaway isn't that a rout is necessarily in the offing - a couple national polls have Obama up by only six points, and there are closer races on the state level that more directly inform how the electoral votes will be tallied - but one thing that Todd noticed across all the various polls was a wide "enthusiasm gap" between Democrats and Republicans. "Republicans aren't excited about calling themselves a Republican right now," Todd said.

But Todd was quick to caution against making any foregone conclusions in June, noting the comeback swells that nearly salvaged Gerald Ford's candidacy in 1976 and that did carry George H. W. Bush to the presidency in 1988. "Both campaigns had one thing in common and that is they made it a referendum on the challenger," Todd said, "It became about: is Jimmy Carter really ready for the job? With Dukakis, it became about: is he one of us? With Obama it will be both of those things."

[WATCH.]

TODD: The thing that I would be nervous about if I were the McCain folks and I heard you had Rick Davis on. And he was right to point out something about the Los Angeles Times poll and that is this massive party identification gap, where there's sort of a 15 point gap between people identifying themselves as Democrats versus Republicans. While that's true that won't be what election day looks like and if it did it would be 400 members of Democrats in Congress, 75 Democratic U.S. Senators. Pretty much Obama would carry every state but Utah. That said, it is pointing to an enthusiasm gap. Republicans aren't excited about calling themselves a Republican right now, so maybe they are calling themselves an independent. Maybe they are just, you know, not identifying at all. They are just not enthusiastic. And that's the one thing all of these polls have in common. whether it's the Newsweek that has him up 15, Los Angeles Times 12, USA Today/Gallup 6, our own poll 6, the thing that we all, that they all have in common, massive enthusiasm gap between the Democrats and the Republicans.

SCARBOROUGH: Put this in historical perspective for us. When you go back to 1988, where Michael Dukakis had a huge lead over George Bush Senior. Yet he came back. Talked about Jimmy Carter, 1976 way ahead and ended up very close. Or would could talk about, this could be like 1996, where Bill Clinton stayed way ahead of Bob Dole and endsed up trouncing him. What are you looking at right now as far as a historical perspective?

TODD: Let me take 1988 and 1976 for a minute because what is interesting there is the big comebacks. When you talk to people, Ford might have been one day away from finishing his comeback. Obviously, George Bush Senior did finish his comeback. But both campaigns had one thing in common and that is they made it a referendum on the challenger. It became about: is Jimmy Carter really ready for the job? With Dukakis, it became about: is he one of us? With Obama it will be both of those things, is he ready for the job and is he one of us. But I look at this, you think, don't ignore 1980 as a potential example, where it feels like a fairly close race right now. Ultimately, I know 15, in some polls, but I think single-digit race and certainly you look at the battlegrounds and it feels closer. And that 1980 race between Carter and Reagan and you had the John Anderson factor - which was a real factor in that year, and the independent candidate. All of a sudden if broke at the last minute. In the last week it went from a dead even race and broke and Reagan went from basically being neck and neck to winning an electoral landslide and somewhat of a popular vote landslide. All Reagan had to prove was that he was ready. It was the same thing, Carter was trying to make it a referendum on Reagan. Reagan, the guy might be too conservative, or with Reagan, the guy might be too trigger happy. May not be ready to be commander in chief. And then, of course, they have their one debate. Reagan proves he can stand on the stage with Carter and that was it and they swamped it. And I think that's sort of what's going on here with Obama. It's a referendum on him. If he proves, if he hits, if he does his C-plus work - and I think the country is only looking for C-plus work for him, that may not be fair to McCain but that could be what's happening - that's what happened in the primary. If he hits it, all of a sudden this whole thing could turn in his direction in a big, big way.

I thought it was obvious that Tim Russert was grooming Chuck Todd to be his predecessor. I wondered when Russert died so suddenly if Todd had been groomed long enough. He's young, but has that Russert quality about him: respect for truth, insight and neutrality. I think Chuck Todd is the legacy of Tim Russert at NBC. Hopefully we will be seeing Todd on election night.

That is why people with (R) after their names show absolutely no shame. They are different, they can't think for themselves and they are afraid of anything resembling progress.

I would like to know why MSNBC and other "news" agencies have gone from analysis of the leads to general discussions. Why aren't they talking about the internal breakdown of the 6 to 15 point lead Obama has depending upon the poll. During the Democratic primary that's all we heard--"Hillary is leading with whiteworking class uneducated voters," "Obama is winning the black vote in record numbers."

Why and how is Obama leading McCain? Can we get some analysis of the numbers? If Obama is leading, does that mean his white working class problem is not as problematic as originally reported? Does McCain really hold a lead with respect to national security? What about the young voters? Are they factored into these numbers?

Love Chuck Todd for MTP, but I haven't even seen him do an interview. He's got the respect and even handedness of Russert, but can he deliver a tough question.

Numbers are different to policy. Politicians hide behind 'he said she said' policy diatribes. Economists do the same but with numbers. This guy only has numbers. That is what he is going to be remembered for. You can see he is not happy with the numbers but he has to call it the way it is. If it was close he could back W McCain, but if its a landslide he has to back the numbers, otherwise no one will ever take him seriously.

Here' s the fundamental point about Chuck Todd...It's not about whether you "like" him or "don't like him"...unlike the other yappers on MSNBC like Matthews and Olbermann, there is not an "agenda" with Toddy. He comes prepared and lucid -- he approaches things in a non-confrontational, non-opinionated way. And THAT's why what he says matters more than the blather from Matthews and Obermann. I like Keith -- and I respect him as a highly-opinionated yap for the leftist cause. But the point is he IS a yap, and therefore has less credibility than someone like Todd. And Matthews is not only a yap, he's a sap. If I see one more segment on Hardball about Obama's "problems" -- like being up 15 points but WHOOPS he's behind McCain on TERRORISM! (which 4% of the population says is of major importance) or he's up by 15 points but WHOOPS he can't get the white "working class vote in Appalachia" (like that really matters, in today's demographics)....It just makes me want to throw up.

Bottom line -- gottta love and respect C. Todd. And have you noticed he's beginning to be more assertive in his interviews? He used to just wait to be called on and shut up when the hosts (like Matthews) would cut him off or talk over him. Not any more. Chuck realizes that he's got a gift -- and that the only way he can make it pay for him is to step it up.

Chucky T. is definitely one of the best political analyst on tv at the moment. I remember flipping through MSNBC, CNN and Fox during the primary coverage and his analysis was always miles ahead of everyone else. John King with his touch screen board couldn't hold a candle to Chucky T. I hope during the political coverage in the fall he steps in for Russert. Its hard to image that he only has 15 months of tv experience. Heck he didn't even want to be on tv. Just shows you the legacy of Russert of finding talent.

I couldn't agree with you more. You remind me of the Chuck Todd Fact that says:

FACT: When John King grows up, he wants to be just like Chuck Todd.

Chuck Todd is an election guy, that's his specialty. I'm not sure interview is his thing.

In the movie "Repo Man" there was this line, "The more you drive, the stupider you get."

That's how I feel about MTP, "The more you watch 'Meet the Press', the stupider you get."

If you watched 'Meet the Press' before the Iraqi War, you believed that Saddam had an active nuclear weapons program and a cache of biological weapons. If you watched MTP you were essentially brain washed with propaganda.

Russert hired Chuck Todd for his knowledge of politics and more importantly his understanding of the numbers and the parties involved within the political sphere. Having said that, I am more than sure that Chuck understood that his place would be the student or understudy for Russert as his eventual replacement one day. He and NBC probably never figured, tragically, that day would arrive as soon as it did. He, however, would be fine, no one knew much about Russert when he began. It takes time to gain the trust of the viewers.

Todd's the best. Like Russert in his political intelligence, balance, and calm realism, but even better than Russert in the end. I hope NBC has the brains to choose him for Meet the Press and to make him their central go-to guy for politics from now on.

Chuck now on the SUSPECT LIST!

I'm a fan of Chuck Todd's, but listening to him this morning made me cringe. These two comments have a racial slant to them. He left a bad taste in my mouth. Excuse me one moment. Vomit.

Is he one of us? Yes, he is an American.
Country is only looking for C-plus work. Not me, I expect Senator Obama to be on his A game everyday and then some.

Yeah the C plus comment ticked me off to. Barack didn't beat the Clinton's by only getting a C plus. No way, no how. With the Clinton machine you have to bring your A game the entire round.

Since most political polls still exclusively call fixed telephone lines and the cell-phone-only crowd tend to be liberal and younger, these polls are extremely skewed in McCains favor. In fact, almost all of the people I know in their 20"s and 30"s are cell phone only. If the Republicans think THIS is bad news, they"ve got a surprise headed their way in November.
