NEW YORK — Barack Obama will fight for equal rights for gays just as he fought to help working-class families overcome poverty, the Democratic presidential hopeful's wife told a gay Democratic group Thursday.

Recalling his past work as a community organizer to help struggling families, Michelle Obama said he would take the same approach as president.

"Barack believes that we must fight for the world as it should be, a world where together we work to reverse discriminatory laws," she said at a Manhattan fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council.

Michelle Obama also drew a connection between the struggles for gay rights and civil rights.

"We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union," she said at the event, held days before the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots between gays and New York police, and the city's annual gay pride parade.

"The world as it is should be one that rejects discrimination of all kinds," she said.

Touting her husband's record pushing for workplace discrimination legislation as an Illinois state senator and his support of civil unions, Obama noted her husband also had brought a call for equality to conservative groups, telling churchgoers they need to combat homophobia in the black community.

The Illinois senator opposes a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and says states should make their own decisions on the matter. He has said he's interested in ensuring that same-sex couples in civil unions get federal benefits.

His Republican opponent, Arizona Sen. John McCain, also opposes a federal constitutional amendment but worked to ban gay marriage in his home state. McCain supports the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, while Obama has called it "counterproductive."

Michelle Obama's speech brought a standing ovation from the crowd of about 200 donors, who raised about $1.3 million, organizers said.

Earlier Thursday, she spoke in Manchester, N.H., and credited Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband's rival for the Democratic nomination, with bringing the concerns of working families to the forefront of the presidential campaign.

She heard from New Hampshire women juggling such work and family concerns as child care and caring for aging parents. She explained her husband's plans to expand sick time and paid family leave, help parents afford child care and make sure women get equal pay for equal work.

"We are closer to this America than ever before, and that's because of an extraordinary woman who's not in this room but she's traveling with my husband tomorrow, and that woman is Hillary Clinton," Michelle Obama said to sustained applause.

"I know that the folks here in New Hampshire know this better than anyone because you got to know the candidates up close and personal, but because of Hillary Clinton's work the issues of importance to women and working families are front and center."

Clinton and Barack Obama are to make their first public joint appearance Friday in Unity, N.H.

Thanks everyone for your posts. You've convinced me NOT to vote for Obama.

SanityClaus your complete devotion to back Obama despite the facts posted on this site makes me rather suspicious of your intention here.

I've read everything on this page, and honestly have come to reconsider my support for Obama. If he isn't part of the solution than he's part of the problem. His lack of support for equality will lead us no where. Perhaps it's best that McCain wins. This way he could take the fall for the havoc caused these past 8 years (besides he isn't planning on running 2 terms anyway). And we concentrate on getting the right candidates for the Senate and House...leaders who aren't afraid of making a change at a state level since that is clearly where everyone (including Obama) is telling us the fight needs to be made.

And as for selecting a SCJ, Obama's support for guns, capital punishment, government spying and separate but equal marriage laws give me no reason to believe that O is trustworthy to appoint someone worthy to balance out the conservative majority in the SC.

I was behind Obama but he's really losing me

Meeks, McClurking and Caldwell are not just supporters of Obama. Obama has invited these homophobes to share the stage with him. That's radically different than these guys supporting Obama and he saying he doesn't agree with them. For me, if you disagree with homophobes, you don't invite them to share the stage with you. Obama's talk sounds good. His actions really suck if you're LBGT. Besides, this week we saw how strongly Obama held to his promise of opposing the FISA bill. If he's willing to throw the constitution under the bus, tossing aside LGBT folks will be a piece of cake!

My hope is that at some point gays or however will come to realize that the war in Iraq, health care and the weakening of the middle class affect everyone in this country rather your gay, Latino, black, Asian whoever. I really do get tried of this idea that a candidate has to show "special attention" to special groups of people. Again, the major issues of the day affect everyone in this country, and until those are solved take a number!

My hope is that straights will realize that this issue is the one that they lose elections over because they don't take the correct position.

Will he? He's been cowardly moving to the center in recent weeks and do you seriously think he will fight for gay/lesbian rights? As a liberal I wish I could say he will but let's get real folks. He needs to get elected president and he needs to bastardize his views to get there.

Americans need to stop being so afraid. Discrimination actually isolates us from each other and limits our choices in being cooperative.

BTW, Michelle is cool !!!

First, my bonofides: My sister is gay, my brother-in-law is gay, and my daughter is gay.

Now, Sen. O is aware that the secret to securring marraige rights is not to publicly take a position that could allow Mc"if I callled my wife a C@#$T what do you think I call a gay guy?" Cain to get elected, but to get rid of DOMA. Without DOMA then a marraige from CA has to be recognized by the rest of the states, . . . and the walls come tumbling down.

Also get rid of DADT and many more walls fall, as straight folks find out that there are heroes to be found everywhere.

Woul I like to wave a magic wand and make all of the unfairness my daughter will deal with disapear, YES! But poltics is the art of the possible.

and by the way, what kind of Supreme Court do we get without Sen. O?

We will get a supreme court that favors states rights and capital punishment.

Maybe if YOU were gay, you would get it.

Without the progressive on the Supreme Court, your very nature would STILL be illegal.

Maybe if you had kids, you would get that I would give up every right I own to make sure my daughter has full rights. There is nothing I wouldn't do to make her life better, BUT reality is a bitch, and purity of ideals is a luxery we cannot afford. Stick to your guns, vote for some an R, or some egomaniac that can't get elected. I will support the guy that can help this situation.

I'm a GWM who is way tired of identity politics. This country is in such a goddam mess that it seems more than silly to focus on the Obamas' "purity" on gay and lesbian issues. We are all Americans who are collectively confronted with:

- record gas prices that make it hard for the average person to get back and forth to work
- an economy that's on the verge of recession
- increasing unemployment
- mortgage foreclosures that are putting families in the streets
- forty million Americans without health insurance
- thousands of dead and severly injured young Americans and hundreds of thousands of dead and severly injured Iraqis in a war that's lasted longer than WW II with no end in sight
- Osama roaming free and making videos
- a government so incompetent that it couldn't protect its own people in New Orleans and managed to "lose" $12.8 billion in Iraq
- a government so crooked that lobbyists write their own regulations while sitting in congressional offices
- collapsing bridges and failing levees
- an education system that teaches children how to take tests
- sixteen years of divisive, ugly, wedge politics that have left us distrustful, fearful, and resentful of one another

We could all go on. Of course I'm concerned about gay issues. Given all of the above, they're just not at the top of my list right now. I, for one, take both Obamas at their word.

Yeah, but what will Obama say when he thinks he needs the votes of gay bashers to win a key state?

Oh, stop your insane twisting, oliver! Senator Obama has been consistent when it comes to gay rights wherever he speaks. In fact, he has consistently gone into venues that have been historically hostile to the idea of gay rights and addressed the issue head on...unlike most other candidates, save Dennis Kucinich.

The great thing is that Obama is winning in some of those key states that have populations that have been not so open to any talk about gay rights. I would consider that pretty damn remarkable. Wouldn't you?

Obama know how it is to be discriminated and he know its not easy to change everything at once.
I could say if you come to the public square, let every one who has blood and spirit in them have the same , freedom and rights. If they use it to their own disadvantage its another thing.

There many decent Gay people who want to live in peace and dont provoke anyone. There others, like some black, some women and some minorities, and majority who have benefited from the discrimination or who make money out of it, spoilt the name of the good cops.

I want to see those decent Gays come out and make a good Image for Other gays. In Berlin , Germany the Mayor is openly gay , but he does not put it on everyones face and he appears in public with his partner dressed in decent classy suits and does not make it an issue every day, it should be normal and no big deal

Yes you must be a good gay. You can't be "uppity" or too "in your face". Do you know what you sound like? Those predjudiced southerners who talk about "good blacks" versus "bad Blacks".

Gay people are constantly attacked - we don't provoke - we are reacting. God you are ignorant.

After 8 long years of Bush, I was expecting a huge swing to the left. Now with Obama as the nominee that doesn't seem likely.

Maybe after four years of McCain the country will FINALLY be ready for a truly democratic leader who will fight for equality instead of appealling to the wrong side.

I wish we didn't have to wait, but that is totally up to Obama.

The only Democratic presidential contenders who supported equal, not separate, protection under the law for gay couples were Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich. After the betrayals by the parselmouthed Clintons with Don't Ask and DOMA in the 1990s, I understand and sympathize your reluctance to once more go along with this thinly veiled anti-gay nonsense. With the Democratic Party's general unwillingness to embrace equality for gay Americans, I feel as though too few in the federal government represents my interests as a gay taxpayer.

Unlike Bill and Hillary Hillary Clinton, Obama has not yet thrown gay voters under the bus by supporting anti-gay legislation like DOMA and Don't Ask. In fact , Obama favors repeals of both. Given the truly homophobic alternatives available: John McSame and former Republican, Bob "I wrote DOMA" Barr, Obama seems like the best choice.

Cynthia McKinney is the best choice. She has my support right now.

But it is never too late for Obama to do the right thing and change all that.

On Chris Matthew's show "Hardball," when Obama was asked about marriage for gays, he responded that he supports "civil unions" for gays! And here we have Michelle Obama speaking about her husband "fighting" for gay rights. How come Obama is not making this statement?

In a few years, we will look back at the current denial of gay marriage in the same shameful way we look back at denying women and AA's the right to vote.
