Roberta McCain: Muzzled By Campaign, But Stealing A Reporter's Heart

It's over between Roberta and me. At least for now.

What with her constant travels, her series of handlers and the 3,000-mile separation (she's in D.C., I'm in L.A.), it just wasn't working.

I concede, with only a tinge of embarrassment, that I've been captivated by that world traveler, grandmother, freeway speedster and potential First Mother of the United States, Roberta McCain.

But after months waiting in vain for a formal interview, I'm beginning to believe that her son's presidential campaign really isn't interested in getting Roberta McCain and me together for, as the man likes to call it, a little "straight talk."

"They've got me muzzled," Mrs. McCain, 96, said when I phoned the other day. She added with a chuckle: "Now don't you print that. . . . I really don't like to be interviewed."

There is a difference between getting an interview with a reporter and getting slimed, attacked and smeared all over the place. If you don't know that difference you don't deserve to vote.

I'll take a crack at explaining the high ground. Here is a list of things that Obama WASN'T INVOLVED IN:


Maybe before you ask WHEN, you had better wait until somebody in the Obama campaign accuses McCain's mother of hating America.

Don't forget, it was McCain's pal BUSH who slimed McCain's military service ("Manchurian candidate, turncoat, crazy from captivity," stuff like that),

slimed his adopted daughter from Bangladesh "(the biological child of McCain and a black prositiute"...even sliming children is not beneath these filthy slugs),

and McCain's wife ("trophy wife, druggy,").

And McCain responded by embracing Bush. He didn't stop hugging him until Bush's own chickens came home to roost, but now he is finally distancing himself from Bush and his policies. But not until his alliance with Bush began to hurt McCain's own chances for electoral glory.

And McCain is the one who told the filthy joke about Chelsea Clinton's looks and her mother's and Janet Reno's whatever, and the Clintons still touted McCain as the default choice is she didn't get the nomination.'

And you come here talking about "high ground."
