Facing a stubborn fire, California officials ordered the evacuation of Big Sur on Wednesday as flames flared on nearby mountaintops and moved steadily toward this coastal retreat.

Firefighters have been attacking a fire near Big Sur for 11 days and had been helped in recent days by fog, moist conditions and lighter winds. Seventeen homes have been lost here -- more than half the total destroyed statewide from the first major wildfires of the season -- but many residents had been allowed to remain as the fire stayed to the east and south.

But overnight Tuesday the fire unexpectedly intensified, prompting mandatory evacuations of residents on both sides of Highway 1, the scenic coastal byway that runs through the Big Sur valley.

"It's tough to move out of your home; we understand that," said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who visited the town with federal emergency officials on Wednesday, "but do it."

Yellow smoke and ash mixed in the air as a procession of possession-laden cars, trucks and vans streamed north out of town. Horses, goats, cats and dogs were also being trucked out by animal welfare workers, as helicopters ferried back and forth to the ocean, drawing out water to dump on smoldering hillsides east of town.

One of those evacuating was Erica Sanborn, 28, who was living with her husband and their dog in a hotel in Big Sur, having already been forced out of their home, farther south on the coast.

While a terrible danger to humans and animals, the fires are a benefit to the environment and an integral part of a natural renewal cycle in this part of the world.
Native Americans used to beg the forest service not to put every fire out in order to prevent bigger fires and allow the earth to breathe and cleanse itself.

Latest research shows that Native Americans practiced environment modification on a grand scale in some parts of California.

Hiking in the Los Padres National Forest is a workout. Fire fighting in it on foot would be nearly impossible. Let's pray for a big rain.

Lightening fires are a natural event in nature and in wilderness areas. Humans are not suppose to live in these places. The fires restore the forests and landscape. It takes years, but what is the hurry, in the total scheme of things?

I am so glad I had the chance to visit Big Sur several times during my life. Now it is gone and is a lesson for all of us that nothing stays the same and we must not be attached to things that will ultimately change in this life. Mother Earth is mad at us and we will suffer worse fates than this fire. Food and water are becoming scare. I live in Calif where fires are raging. Our life here has turned on a dime. Gas is 4.70 and rising. Time to hunker down, grow food and pray.

Well. So much for going the Big Sur, dropping acid, and finding god.

If you get that one, you're good...

Local california paper said the residents there are staying to protect the grounds. They may have been forced to leave by now. It is Thursday morning here in Calif.

I'm scheduled to camp in Julia Pheiffer State Park the 19-21 and bring my 13 year old.
I'm not looking forward to showing her a burned out forest and the creek and swimming holes
will be dried up or filled with charred silt. I'm thinking of canceling and going to Two Harbors
Catalina. I'll save gas money and time.

Man Big Sur is pure heaven one of the most beautiful spots you can imagine it's such a shame and Coastal Highway 1 the whole trip through there is just beautiful it could be years to grow back if that region burns and ruin the vista of the highway there and the ocean there...

Let's pray for rain they need it in California...

You gotta give Gov. Schwarzenegger credit -- he speaks plainly. That's not a bad trait in a politician!

Best wishes for everyone who lives in the Big Sur area, and also for the thousands of firefighters working so hard on the project.

I never supported Arnold (I'm a CAL resident) but at least he shows up and does things when disasters happen. More than one can say for Mr. Bush.

This is what climate change in the twenty-first century looks like folks. Fires and drought here; floods and crops lost there; tornadoes, hurricanes and freak weather everywhere. And with the added Wendigo of Energy Scarcity and economic ruin, we won't have the ability to fight back or to rebuild. Think New Orleans is an anomaly? It is the standard for ruin in America.

"Hey! You can't talk like that! These folks are suffering."

Yes I can. I lived through a monster fire destroying my community after several years of drought. I lived through the censorship that saw it impossible to criticize the lack of organization, common sense and response to the fire, because that would be unpatriotic and cynical. Is that community responding in a way as to allay the future threats of Climate Change? No.

The 21'st century is going to be a hard slog folks.

Add to that zero investment in our infrastructure, and you have a recipe for a crumbling society.

Thanks, Dubya.

A fire derived eco system doing its thing.

Should featherless bipeds even be there?
