Jim Webb: "Under No Circumstances" Will I Consider V.P. Role

**UPDATE BELOW** Behind Webb's Decision

Vice presidential searches are always punctuated by potential candidates making stern statements about their lack of interest in the job, or their sense of obligation to their local constituencies. But on Monday, Sen. Jim Webb offered what appeared to be a far more sincere rejection to a possible V.P. offer.

Considered by many an ideal running mate for Barack Obama, the Virginia Democrat (through his Senate office) said that "under no circumstances" would he consider the nomination.

The move makes Webb one of a handful of individuals to preemptively take themselves out of the running (see: Strickland, Ted). And while the sentiments of politicians can surely change, those who have followed Webb's career note that his free-talking temperament and history of being his own boss (he's been a film writer, journalist, secretary of the navy, etc...) made him unlikely to want, let alone accept, the running mate role.

Here is the statement:

"Last week I communicated to Senator Obama and his presidential campaign my firm intention to remain in the United States Senate, where I believe I am best equipped to serve the people of Virginia and this country. Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for Vice President. "A year and a half ago, the people of Virginia honored me with election to the U.S. Senate. I entered elective politics because of my commitment to strengthen America's national security posture, to promote economic fairness, and to increase government accountability. I have worked hard to deliver upon that commitment, and I am convinced that my efforts and talents toward those ends are best served in the Senate. "In this regard, the bipartisan legislative template we were able to put into effect through 18 months of work in order to enact the new, landmark GI Bill will serve as a prototype for my future endeavors in government. This process, wherein we brought 58 Senators from both parties to the table as co-sponsors, along with more than 300 members of the House, gives me renewed confidence that the Congress can indeed work effectively across party lines and address the concerns of our citizens.

"At this time I am also renewing my commitment to work hard to make sure that Senator Obama wins both Virginia and the presidency this November. He is a man who speaks eloquently about our national goals and calls for the practical solutions that must be put into place to obtain them. I will proudly campaign for him."

Marc Ambinder has more details on how Webb came to his decision:

Barack Obama's vice presidential selection team has begun to ask potential candidates for information and documents, a signal that the formal vetting phase of the search process has begun.

Last week, members of the team gave Sen. James Webb of VA a list of what they needed to begin their investigation of his background and career. Webb refused, telling them that he did not want to be considered for the position.

A Democrat close to Webb confirms that a request for documents preceded his declaration to the Obama campaign. The Democrat said that Webb did not want to relive the vigors of a campaign so soon after his election to the Senate.

If he was selected, all we would hear about for the first few weeks would be the racy sex scenes and misogynist themes of his novels. The conservatives would have a field day with it. Definitely not what we want the focus to be on right now.

I'm a Vet from Virginia. I have sent several e-mails and request to this guy regarding the Naval Clinics in our area. He has never responded. He is a phony baloney and should not be re-elected. He can not even keep up with his weapon. He is a putz. I am also a Dem. We would be better off with George Allen, I am sorry to say.

Very sorry to hear Senator Webb decline the VP position. He would be my first choice. The Dems next great choice (and mine) would be Senator Joe Biden. Let's hear it for J O E.

Go Obama!

Webb is acting kind of strange here. His comment about Obama, "he is a man who speaks eloquently about our national goals," is a backhanded compliment if there ever was one.

Webb and Strickland, who come out publicly announcing they "definitely won't be VP" are either trying to save face or trying to undermine Obama for their own political purposes. None of those options reflects particularly well on them.

so you're saying that people are being selfish when saying they don't want to be VP? That's ridiculous. Strickland and Webb have held their offices for 1.5 years. They were elected by the people of their respective states to serve in that position. It would be Selfish of them to ACCEPT a VP position.

I'm not saying they're being selfish. I'm saying that they're probably trying to undermine Obama, because as two up and coming politicians who did not endorse Obama in the primaries, they are probably worried that they won't be treated fairly by Obama if Obama became president for the next 4/8 years (although I don't think Obama is that kind of person), and therefore they don't want Obama to win. Power has a lot to do with perception, so they're probably trying to undermine Obama, send a message to the party that they don't care if Obama is the nominee or not. That weakens Obama among the establishment.

I don't blame Webb one bit. Who'd want to go through that crap? If Obama asked me, I'd say no, too.

I totally don't buy this. Webb suddenly puts this statement out just days before Obama is likely to announce his pick. Perhaps Webb wants to make it look as if he might have been first choice but turned it down. Or, perhaps he just doesn't want to have his personal life looked into.

In any case, he's got a thin political resume, and has been married three times. He's also seen by many women as misogynistic. This guy was never really in the running except in the political punditry world.

The ghosts (which are commonly known as skeletons to most people) are probably not in Jim's closet, but in Obama's. The Democratic insider rumor mill (rumors, I know) has it that Hillary ALREADY turned Obama down for the V.P. slot when they met at Diane Feinstein's house. She essentially said that, because of what he is hiding (read October surprise), he was going down and she didn't want to go down with him. Believe it, or don't believe it, just kinda makes you wonder when you start to see other likely V.P. candidates start to back away from Obama as well.

Still would like some feedback about Silvestre Reyes, Texas Representative from El Paso. Checked him out, and I think he'd be good. What do you all think?

Since Senator Obama has been running for President he has stated time and time again that he wants to get rid of the blue vs. red attitude that has plagued this nation for twenty plus years and It is amazing that his so called supporters are eating him alive for doing just that. Did you not listen to what he was saying? These same supporters claim responsibility for getting him the nomination and think he owes them something! You may of helped but we all got him elected. I support and voted for Obama in the primaries and want him to work for unity of our country not just the progressive agenda. You people have the same attitude that the right has had the past 8 years....my way or the highway. That is not the American way! Quit beating him up for doing what he said he was going to do, you should get the wax out of your ears so you can hear and maybe understand what he has been saying. I don't agree with all of what he has said, but he wants to bring red and blue Americans together, and that is what he has been trying to do!!!! Keep it up and you'll get McCain elected, wouldn't that be great!

Obama will wait until John McCain chooses his VP to choose his. Those that are too impatient or have other plans will remove themselves from the list. This is not an issue for Obama.

unfortunately, we have to go first as our convention is the week before the repubs...it's an important but not a huge advantage. if obama makes a pick that puts a red state in play (e.g., Sam Nunn and Georgia or, until yesterday, Webb and Virginia), McCain can counter by using the veep to challenge in a blue state (ridge in pennsylvania, romney in michigan).

There isn't a chance in the world that will happen.

Obama will have to go first as his convention is first.

McCain is the one who will wait to try and balance the choice made by Obama.

Obama can't wait.

Quinnipiac University Poll New York state June 11, 2008

"Obama Gains Among Whites To Bury McCain In New York, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; More Oppose Clinton As Obama Running Mate"

Quote:
" In this latest survey, New York State voters say 48 - 42 percent that Obama should not pick Sen. Clinton as his running mate. Democrats support the idea 53 - 35 percent, while Republicans oppose it 62 - 27 percent and independent voters oppose it 53 - 41 percent. "

Many Hillary supporters won't vote for the ticket even if she's on it because it's all or nothing for them, which would make your take on the poll inaccurate. ABC said that an estimated 25% of her supporters (4.5 million) will not vote for Obama, so even a fraction of those would affect the poll.

if obama wasn't "burying McCain in NY," at this point, he'd be in real trouble...

the republicans in new york aren't thinking straight in that poll. if Hillary becomes veep it might enable them to mount a reasonable challenge for a seat that is otherwise out of reach.
