NEW YORK — The launch of Apple Inc.'s much-anticipated new iPhone turned into an information-technology meltdown on Friday, as customers were unable to get their phones working.

"It's such grief and aggravation," said Frederick Smalls, an insurance broker in Whitman, Mass., after spending two hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T Inc., trying to get his new iPhone to work.

In stores, people waited at counters to get the phones activated, as lines built behind them. Many of the customers had already camped out for several hours in line to become among the first with the new phone, which updates the one launched a year ago by speeding up Internet access and adding a navigation chip.

A spokesman for AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S., said there was a global problem with Apple's iTunes servers that prevented the phones from being fully activated in-store, as had been planned.

Instead, employees are telling buyers to go home and perform the last step by connecting their phones to their own computers, spokesman Michael Coe said.

However, the iTunes servers were equally hard to reach from home, leaving the phones unusable except for emergency calls.

The problem extended to owners of the previous iPhone model. A software update released for that phone on Friday morning required the phone to be reactivated through iTunes.

"It's a mess," said freelance photographer Giovanni Cipriano, who updated his first-generation iPhone only to find it unusable.

Apple shares fell $4.05, or 2.3 percent, to close Friday at $172.58 amid a general decline in U.S. stocks.

When the first iPhone went on sale a year ago, customers performed the whole activation procedure at home, freeing store employees to focus on sales. But the new model is subsidized by carriers, and Apple and AT&T therefore planned to activate all phones in-store to get customers on a contract.

The new phone went on sale in 21 countries on Friday, creating a global burden on the iTunes servers.

The iPhone has been widely lauded for its ease of use and rich features, but Apple is a newcomer to the cell-phone business, and it's made some missteps. When it launched the first phone in the U.S. a year ago, it initially priced the phones high, at $499 and $599, then cut the price by $200 just 10 weeks later, throwing early buyers for a loop.

Rollouts to other countries were slow, as Apple tried to get carriers on board with its unusual pricing scheme, which included monthly fees to Apple. The business model of the new phone follows industry norms, and the price is lower: $199 or $299 in the U.S.

On Thursday, Apple had problems with the launch of a new data service, MobileMe. The service is designed to synchronize a users personal data across devices, including the iPhone, but many users were denied access to their accounts.

Enthusiasm was high ahead of the Friday morning launch of the new phone.

Alex Cavallo, 24, was one of hundreds lined up at the Fifth Avenue store, just as he had been a year ago for the original iPhone. He sold that one recently on eBay in anticipation of the new one. In the meantime, he has been using another phone, which felt "uncomfortable."

"The iPhone is just a superior user experience," he said. The phone also proved a decent investment for him: He bought the old model for $599 and sold it for $570.

Nick Epperson, a 24-year-old grad student, spent the night outside an AT&T store in Atlanta, keeping his cheer up with bags of Doritos, three games of Scrabble and two packs of cigarettes. Asked why he was waiting in line, he responded simply "Chicks dig the iPhone."

IPhone fever was strong even in Japan, where consumers are used to tech-heavy phones that do restaurant searches, e-mail, music downloads, reading digital novels and electronic shopping. More than 1,000 people lined up at the Softbank Corp. store in Tokyo and the phone quickly sold out.

"Just look at this obviously innovative design," Yuki Kurita, 23, said as he emerged from buying his iPhone, carrying bags of clothing and a skateboard he had used as a chair during his wait outside the Tokyo store. "I am so thrilled just thinking about how I get to touch this."

The phone went on sale first in New Zealand, where hundreds of people lined up outside stores to snap it up right at midnight _ 8 a.m. Thursday in New York.

"Steve Jobs knows what people want," Web developer Lucinda McCullough told the Christchurch Press newspaper, referring to Apple's chief executive. "And I need a new phone."

In Germany, sales were brisk at local carrier T-Mobile's stores, particularly in Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, said spokeswoman Marion Kessing.

I often wonder what goes on in the marketing dept at Apple...someone from R & D comes in with this beautiful looking phone, something that is as cool as its functional and then knowing what other phones supply in terms of features and in fact knowing what is one of the most used type of message in the world..the Multi media msg, they permit the exclusion of the picture messaging feature (please correct me if im wrong in this but it seems you CANT send Multimedia msgs on it..).Could Apple possibly make it any more difficult for themselves making the iphone 3G THE phone to have... memo to APPLE:

1.People adore the phone but theyre NOT prepared to be shafted buying it or to be forced into 2 yr contracts just to have it.

2.People love to send pictures for whatever reason.! make it easy for them to do it.duh.

3.The phone should be a global cutural "must have" object ,a cool object everyone wants to have but it HAS to be affordable..i.e a flat price globally in terms of monthly charges AS WELL as flat rate purchase prices for the different models.

4.Apple is strong enough to dicate these price agreements with carriers because the interest is there with the public and they could sell tens of millions of these phones but the will to buy isnt there on account of the fleecing of customers by individual carriers.

Apple Inc is the biggest SCAM company to ever grace the tech sector. That's why investor's love this company. Their products suck balls and gargle. But, they SURE do know how to make a buck.

You notice how the people who DON'T have an iPhone seem to complain about it a whole lot more than the people who DO?

I had no problem updating my phone this afternoon. It took about 20 minutes to download the 230Mb software update, backup my 8Gb phone, install the software and restore my data.

Wow... a whole 20 minutes. Better bankrupt the company now.

Oh.. and by the way... some of the new aps are really fun, helpful and dare I say it? Cool.

I was downtown in Portland today and as I went to the bottom of Pioneer Square and saw the hundreds of people in line - I just thought, these people have no life to be waiting hours for a PHONE! A phone people! It doesn't do laundry, doesn't pay the bills - in fact all you do is rack up a bill using it. So order it online - oh wait, you may have to wait a DAY OR TWO to get it! HORRORS!!!! Kudos to Apple though for creating all this hype for a phone that already has reported bugs in it.

While I agree with you about hype, my husband dropped his BlackBerry in the Willamette about 2 weeks ago. He hooked up an old piece of crap Motorola to his account just so he could wait it out until yesterday (3G Day). He was on a plane at 4 am this morning for a week-long business trip so he needed a reliable phone YESTERDAY and he HAD to stand in that line.

He was at the Bridgeport Mall at either the Apple Store or the ATT Store for NINE hours.

BUT! He said they fed him, they gave him drinks, at one point his old cell phone battery died and he was unable to stand there and answer security questions for ATT over his phone so the manager from the Bridgeport ATT store went to the Bridgeport Verizon store (where my husband had his account) and BOUGHT him a charger so he could make use his old phone long enough to answer security questions.

While it was grueling and long and even sunburning in the heat (Apple later brought out umbrellas for people having to stand in the sun) my husband said he was treated so well, especially by ATT, that he was never happier over something he bought.

1. You can't order it online.

2. Although it may seem silly to you to get excited over a phone (and it is), I'm sure there is somthing that you get excited about (movies, music, etc.) that a lot of us wouldn't.

They're not hurting anyone. Don't be so judgmental.

Today AT&T lost a customer. While everyone is hyped about the $199/299 price I was shut out. Because I lost my phone exactly a year and a week ago I went in to get a new one. In order to walk out of the store that day with a phone I was REQUIRED to sign a two year contract extension. Today, when I called in to AT&T to confirm the prices as well as find out the monthly billing I was told that because I was ineligible for a phone upgrade until next year I would be forced to buy the iPhone 3G at $399/499. When I asked if there could be exceptions made they told me NO EXCEPTIONS! I asked for a manager and he literally read me a script. I asked if he read me a script and he RE-READ me the script. WTF? So, as a loyal customer of 4 years, I was told to pay extra while new customers, with no brand loyalty whatsoever, get the cheap price? That's baloney. Well, Verizon, wait for me because in 8 months when my contract is up I'm coming to you. Please, if you haven't joined AT&T yet I am warning you: DON'T BECOME A CUSTOMER! THEY WILL TAKE YOUR BUSINESS FOR GRANTED! THEY WILL NOT TREAT YOU AS A HUMAN BEING! VERIZON HAS A SMART PHONE COMPARABLE TO THE IPHONE. IT IS CHEAPER! DON'T BUY AT&T!

Verizon does the same thing if you change your contract. I got stuck with a two year contract after changing one thing on the contract.

Wake up. They all do this.

You must work for Verizon!

No, I don't work for Verizon. You can check my profile to know I'm not a spammer or troll. I just think it is patently ridiculous that a company would give discounts to non-customers (people with no brand loyalty) and those who do not spend money often on that company's products. Which makes more sense: giving good sales to someone who renews their contract several times over the duration of their relationship with the company, extending the time period in which they get a guaranteed payment from me (whether or not it's from losing my phone or not), or someone who only renews when they have to and doesn't buy phones for two years? In a capitalist society shouldn't there be increased incentive to be a serial consumer?

My nightmare experience with the iPhone and the worst cellular carrier in the world, AT&T is way to long to post here, but I put it in a letter and sent it to Steve Jobs. Upon receipt Apple jumped through hoops to make sure that I got a full refund on the phone and a complete refund on the massive overcharges from AT&T - it was truly a nightmare experience that put me through hell. Clearly, the iPhone is the Emperor"s New Clothes. It"s a perfect example if you throw enough advertising, PR and marketing dollars at something, millions of people will eat dirt and call it fillet mignon.

Too bad for you, but the iPhone wouldn't be the huge success it is if this is what happened to everyone. I bought 2 for my family and I dare say it's one of the better decisions I've made (gadget-wise).

My son waited 3.5 hours at an AT&T store, then just as he got to the door, they told him they were sold out. My daughter and wife went to the Apple Store, were there at 7am, and as of 1:30pm, they are still waiting outside.

Now, I don't fault Apple or AT&T for the snafus. I fault all the stupid people who fall for their hype. Apple is strong when it comes to creativitiy, but very weak on logistics. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. Of course, I won't be saying that to my family, but you know what I'll be thinking.

On top of that, it took me 4 hours to update my original iPhone to Apple update 2.0 because the server was overloaded from the hits. At least I wasn't standing in line dealing with the heat.

Stupid is as stupid does. Anyone who goes for Apple stuff on the first day is an utter sucker.
