WASHINGTON — Sen. Barack Obama 's trip to the Middle East and Europe marks his first high-profile step onto the international stage, a campaign-season audition of sorts for a presidential hopeful pledging a new era in diplomacy and an end to the U.S. combat role in Iraq.

"The stakes are very high for Obama," said Lee Hamilton, president of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a supporter of the Illinois Democrat.

While Obama currently leads in the polls, "foreign policy is one area where they (voters) have their doubts" about him, Hamilton said.

Campaign officials have announced stops in Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and England. Obama also has pledged to travel to Iraq and Afghanistan this summer, but aides have not said whether those war zones will be part of the same trip.

The trip is planned to put Obama into settings often occupied by presidents, including formal meetings with foreign leaders, public speeches and visits to historical sites.

"It's an opportunity for him to sit down with the international leaders with whom he would have to work as president of the United States, and discuss some of the issues," said David Axelrod, the campaign's senior strategist.

Obama has been critical of Bush's foreign policy in his campaign for the White House, but Hamilton said the Democratic presidential nominee-in-waiting must tread lightly. "Criticizing foreign policy in Washington in one thing. Criticizing it in Berlin" is another, he said.

"There will be a lot of eyes on him, and we know that," Axelrod said, when asked about the risk of politically damaging errors.

Less than four months before the election, Obama's trip comes at a time when he leads Republican rival John McCain in many polls but runs no better than even on many foreign policy questions.

In a recent Washington Post-ABC poll, 72 percent of those surveyed said McCain knew enough about world affairs to serve effectively as president, compared to 54 percent for Obama.

The two men were in a statistical tie when voters were asked who was more trusted to handle the situation between Israel and the Palestinians or the war in Iraq.

Whatever he says or does, Obama will be under scrutiny from Republicans eager to raise doubts about his readiness to handle foreign and defense policy.

"This trip is about politics. It's a way for Obama to try and compete on foreign policy," said Jill Hazelbaker, McCain's communications director.

McCain has left the country three times since becoming the likely Republican nominee. A trip to Canada and a second excursion to Colombia and Mexico were to express support for expanded trade. In March, he also visited Israel, Jordan, Britain and France.

At home, Obama has struggled to consolidate his support among Jewish voters wary of his commitment to Israel.

And while Obama is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Ohlmert, Palestinian officials have announced he will visit the West Bank. McCain did not meet with Palestinians in his most recent visit to the Middle East in March.

"We welcome this meeting," Saeb Erekat, a Palestinian negotiator, said recently. He added that if Obama is elected "we hope he will stay the course between Israel and the Palestinians in reaching peace and a two-state solution." Bush is trying to broker a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians before leaving office in January.

Obama stirred controversy in June with a speech before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in which he endorsed a two-state Israel-Palestine settlement, yet said Jerusalem should remain both the capital of the Jewish nation and undivided.

Palestinian leaders quickly rejected the statement. "...We will not accept a Palestinian state without having Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state," said Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and the next day, Obama backpedaled.

"Well, obviously, it's going to be up to the parties to negotiate a range of these issues. And Jerusalem will be part of those negotiations," he said in a CNN interview. He added that "as a practical matter, it would be very difficult to execute" a division of the city.

Stops in Western European capitals are standard for U.S. politicians seeking to burnish foreign policy credentials, and Hamilton said government leaders are eager to meet the candidate.

Campaign aides have disclosed almost nothing of the European itinerary.

Controversy preceded Obama to Germany when aides sought to use the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin as the site for a speech.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was less than enthusiastic, dispatching spokesman Thomas Steg to say she had "only limited understanding for using the Brandenburg Gate as an election campaign backdrop, as it were, and has expressed skepticism about pursuing such plans."

Obama's campaign spokesman Bill Burton responded that the Illinois senator has "considered several sites for a possible speech, and he will choose one that makes most sense for him and his German hosts."

Constructed in 1791 as a symbol of peace in Germany, the gate stood for 28 years during the Cold War at the heavily fortified Berlin Wall that blocked off communist East Germany's sector of the divided city. Probably the capital's best-known monument, it has been restored as a national symbol for a reunified Germany.

This is not his first high profile visit outside the US. As US Senator he made a 4 nation trip to Africa in Aug 2006.

One of the hardest lessons for me to get across to my children was that none of us can have it both ways - you can't go to the beach and go to the movies at the same time. You can't stay up late and not be dragging your wagon in the morning - or drink too much and stay sober. Most of the time it doesn't matter which one you choose, but you gotta choose one and go with it.

Can anyone tell me why the McCain camp thinks that they can have it both ways with Obama's trip to the middle east? His not going was proof he didn't know what he was talking about - now that he's doing exactly what they criticized him for not doing, it's a stunt, grandstanding, presumptuous.

Don't they know or care how foolish and intellectually dishonest this proves them to be - irrefutably?

Would you buy a car from a guy who claims it has the world's most powerful engine AND gets the world's best gas mileage?

I got better talking points from my kids.

He's arrived already in Kabul. he will be okay. The mcCain camp will find fault no matter what he does. What a depressing way to live: always looking for somebody to fail

The MSM continues to give McCain a "pass" on every gaffe and screw-up he makes. Unbelievable.

But I'm counting on people in the countries Obama visits to do the same thing that we did here in America--give such a demonstration of enthusiastic support that the MSM just has to Shut. UP.

We're not the only ones who want change. (And if there are anti-Bush signs in the crowd, too, that can only be good. Our president needs a wake-up call: "Outside of the privileged and arrogant circle you surround yourself with, you're regarded as a disaster all over the WORLD."

In my last post, I referred to Obama as 'the President". He's not the POTUS yet, but I think it'as a done deal and everybody knows it - but the MSM has to do SOMEthing "til November...!

I don't know if it's a stunt or not, but he has kind of put himself in a box with the Iraq issue in attempt to pander to left most side of his base. I think that might come back to bite him, but who knows. Guess we will find out.

Now that Maliki has endorsed Obama's withdrawal plan, it would seem he is the candidate with true leadership qualities, though it may take the American public some time to recognize this, as they haven't seen anything like it in a long, long time.

The problem is not McCaine as much as it is the media. They are covering his criticism of Obama's trip as if it were gospel when all it is is jealousy. I don't think I have ever heard the word "risk" so much in my adult life. "But is there a risk?". The guy hasn't even made one speech and already the media is waiting for a "mistake". These people make me sick.

McCaine"s campaign is in a tizzy. They are so out done they don't know if they're coming or going. The poor guy is flailing his little arms about frustrated as hell. Oh well, be careful what you wish for. For the next week McCaine will be invisable. It was fine when the media was soley focused on Obama's every breath, choosing (and they did choose) to ignore McCaine's gaffs and stumbles. Now you can bet he'll try his best to make news. Let's see, what can he talk about? The economy? Social Security? Offshore drilling? Maybe his handlers will let "McCaine be McCaine" and tell another Ape Rape joke.
I'm sure his BBQ eating media buddies (David Gregory in particular) will be thrilled with his sense of humor. You see it just adds to his much lauded "authenticity". His whole campaign is just weird and creepy.

If this is a stunt, it's a media stunt.

While the network anchors are all off shadowing Obama and hoping to catch (or fabricate?) him in a slip-up, every last bone-headed thing McCranky says in the meantime will continue to go unreported.

I agree with Lee Hamilton, this is high stakes. If he does not screw this up, Obama would get handsome dividends off the trip.

High Profile = High Risk. I see very little upside and a lot of downside, but I guess he has to go for all the oft-stated reasons.

The media will forgive a small gaffe like McCain's resurrecting Czechoslovaki, but nothing big, so I hope he sticks to the script and talking points and doesn't let Jet Lag lead him to say things he doesn't mean (not trivial--Henry Kissinger once said that Jet Lag was one of his biggest issues when he was negotiating overseas and crossing time zones). I also hope that none of the foreign leaders with whom he is going to meet and who detest Bush say anything that sounds like they are "endorsing" Obama, as that will let McCain say stuff like "foreigners don't tell Amurricans how to vote."

He's lived all over the world, and as a U.S. Senator alone has traveled to Russia, Eastern Europe, Africa, Iraq and Israel on official Senate fact finding trips. Please, Bush when quizzed prior to the 2000 election couldn't name ONE of 4 heads of state whose nations were prominent in the press at the time, that the U.S. was dealing with. And this country elected this doofus TWICE!

I for one am very grateful that BHO wants to be President, and I look forward to the pictures and reports of him with the people he'll be interacting with during his visits - I doubt there'll be anything wrong either with those pictures or the one you're suggesting. And after watching the clip shown just now on MSNBC of Bush's recent highly upbeat remarks on our economy - I can't wait for President Obama's terms to begin.

um, GWB could not even pronounce most countries in the world before he became President, much less having visited ANY. Well, maybe Mexico, not sure about that. I visited Mexico, too, when I was 15 years old. Obama forgot more about the world than GWB EVER knew.

Part of McCain's foreign policy expertise makes him want to sign a free trade agreement with Columbia, which has more or less been in a civil war for, oh, I don't know, the 1960s. But hey, what other nation has children knowledgeable in the production of cocaine?

Oh wait McCain did that last year.
