News that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki supports Barack Obama's troop withdrawal plan was hailed by Congress' top Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, as evidence of deep flaws and inconsistencies in President Bush and John McCain's policies for Iraq.

"[Bush], McCain, and others have always talked about respecting the will of this sovereign government in Iraq," said the Speaker. "They have said that when it is secure on the ground we can leave, and they claim it is [secure]. So I think that with all the indications in terms of the will of the government and the security that they are claiming on the ground, it would follow that the time has come for us to go. It is long overdue."

In a wide-ranging interview with the Huffington Post, Pelosi threw sharp jabs at both the outgoing president and the presumptive Republican nominee. Asked whether Maliki's remarks - in which he explicitly favored Obama's approach to US-Iraq relations - had removed the philosophical basis for McCain's war policy, she responded: "I have never seen any basis for a policy to go into Iraq."

"It doesn't make any sense," she continued. "'Why aren't you happy that we have a secure situation on the ground,' they say. And yet we can't go home."

Pelosi also offered harsh words for the president's personal conduct. Asked for her reaction to Bush's declaration that he had given up golf out of respect for U.S. soldiers, the Speaker proclaimed herself at a loss for words.

Watch Pelosi on Iraq:

"What can I say that hasn't been said? The very idea that the president would say that he has given up golf as associating himself with the efforts of our troops in Iraq, speaks so eloquently as to how in denial he is about their sacrifice," she said. "We have been in Iraq more than two years longer than when we were in WWII, So when the president says he is giving up golf, it is as frivolous a statement as his other statements about this war: we are going to be greeted with rose petals, it was rocket propelled grenades; the Iraqis are going to pay for this war or do so soon, and we are still paying the tab to the tune of trillions of dollars."

The Speaker's remarks came shortly after she addressed the Netroots Nation convention in Austin, Texas. While on stage she was asked to respond to Maliki's interview with the German newspaper Der Spiegel. Pelosi, then and in her interview with the Huffington Post, said the remarks provided an important opportunity to initiate high-level meetings with Iraq and American officials.

"It behooves the president to say we will have representatives from our government and the Maliki government to sit down and talk about a responsible, honorable and safe deployment of troops out of Iraq," she said.

The photo heading up this article tells the whole story. The way Bush and Pelosi are looking at each other with smirks and eyebrows raised--dont they look like an old couple who has been married for 30 years and they have their little love spat kvetching schtick down to a science? Talk about the Loyal Opposition! There is no way in hell this woman is going to help bring this war criminal to justice!

C"mon, who expects Pelosi or any other (with the exception of Dennis Kunich) to pound the lectern now and demand that the full weight of the law fall upon the current administration without uttering PNAC or RJC?

She won"t because she can"t. But others can.

Perhaps GeorgeDick will end up in the Netherlands, sharing a cell with Mugabe as they await trial?

One can only hope.

sorry, but there is a serious void in leadership in the democratic party. and as long as they keep favoring left-wing ideological purity over competence and hard work, the void will continue

There's A seriously lack of resolve in the democratic party as to who they really are. As long as they keep favoring "safe" triangulating parsing centrist corporatists, versus Kucinich types who state their truly democratic liberal principles clearly and stick to them, the void will continue.

If you are not heading in the correct direction, all your hard word and competence are for nothing.

Every day polosi shows that she is not a serious thinker. Is the democratic party completly void of people who can do nothing but make a serious contribution to political thought? Her childlike comments show her to be the worthwile person she is.

i think impeachment now, yes. however, we should wait till after January, and executive privileges expire (?), to go for a war crimes tribunal. I believe regardless of what we do in America, other countries (probably Iraq too) will put Bush, Cheney, etc. on trial as war criminals.

Go for a war trials tribunal where? And what is a war trials tribunal anyways, who is in charge of that?

Geez, the impeachment monkeys have once again invaded Huffpo again. Huffpo ...where legitimate ideas are censored but the insane and demented are allowed to post.

The very fact that Pelosi has refused to pursue a legal course of action against the barrage of criminal acts committed by this administration makes her as guilty and responsible as they are. Her refusal to defend our nation and the Constitution is reprehensible.

I've always thought the best way to prove that you're innocent is to not be afraid to tack the stand on your own behalf. The very fact that they refuse to go on record at all shows either their disdain for our country and the Constitution. If they have nothing to hide why not answer the questions under oath??? Certainly Rove has the time..

#1- Outing a CIA agent is a treasonous and illegal act. As was the forging of the yellow cake documents in Nigeria.
#2- Torture is illegal. I seem to remember we, as in the USA, put quite a few Germans and Japanese to death for torturing American soldiers.
#3- Secret meetings with oil companies prior to and after the invasion of Iraq. These are all freedom of information act improprieties.

If it wasn't tired after a long weekend I'd keep going, but since you're a troll nothing I say would ever change anything. I have to admit, its hard to keep track of the laws they broke last year or before because they keep adding so many new ones to the list. Then add on the thousands of laws that they knowingly push to the limit and its almost impossible to keep track of it all.

You're asking for two different things here Ping-

If you are so absurd as to think that no criminal acts have been committed, then you sohuld be committed.

If you are asking what will stick, well that's a different story in its entirety.

Your smug refusal to acknowledge the treasonous nature of this administration is a sad commentary to this nation and the hardworking and brave men and women who are working in vein to carry out the demented agenda of madmen.

Ms. Pelosi speaks eloquently and yet she paints the Bush time as one of incompetence and befuddlingly bad choices. Of course if she were honest, she'd also discuss the Bush regime's criminality.

But she won't do that? Why? Because if she were really being honest she'd have to acknowledge her ongoing complicity in supporting and protecting this ongoing illegality.

She's fooling no one.

Bitch about Pelosi all you want, but honestly, she looks like King Arthur compared to the hollow shell of nothingness that is Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Has anyone with so much power ever done so little? I mean honestly, when was the last time anyone even HEARD from Harry Reid?

Typical uninformed Huffpo comment.

Harry Reid is Senate Majority Leader because of Joe Lieberman. Harry Reid has very little power.

The story:

Malaki gives an independent opinion to the press, praises Obama's 16 month timelable.

Bush calls up Malaki and says, "How dare you inject your opinions into another country's political process. Who do you think you are, us?"

Malaki quickly puts his tail back between his legs, issues a bunch of statements about "misunderstanding" and "bad translation"

Too bad she doesn't accept her responsibility for the Iraq war and how it has been waged. Over and over, Congress has caved to this president.. I haven't forgotten (or forgiven) their complicity in this mess.

I say - get rid of the whole bunch of them. Elect Obama and make a clean sweep of Congress. I understand they need to worry about their re-elections, but we need a group that cares at least as much about the people they are being elected to represent.

"get rid of the whole bunch" sounds great. And then? A new administration plus an unproven speaker of the house may create confusion. I'm not excusing her spineless behavior. At least we know how she works.
