Fox News Anchor Jane Skinner On Jennie Finch, US Olympic Softball Player: "How Cute Is She? Great Representative: Blond, Blue Eyed"

Monday morning on Fox News' "Happening Now," after US Olympic softball team star Jennie Finch made an appearance to discuss the upcoming Olympic Games, co-anchor Jane Skinner made a remark you could only expect on Fox News:

"How cute is she?," Skinner asked, to which her co-host Jon Scott responded, "Very." Skinner then continued, "A great representative: blond, blue-eyed, and extremely talented."

Some of you folks who "don't get it" are talking like true privileged white people. You don't hear it, because it's not directed at marginalizing you. Some of us brown folk might be cynical or polite enough not to make a federal case out of this particular comment, but the message was heard loud and clear. White and pretty comes before talented in the list of important qualifications of athletic representation for America.

It was insulting to the athlete, who isn't exactly going in for a Miss America pageant, and it's insulting to all the people who aren't represented by her pretty Aryan looks.

But whatever. Nothing but another bright white day in the Fox's Dream Homeland. Keep on keepin' on Fox. We're still keepin it real.

As a male who grew up playing fastpitch softball playing for teams that were very nearly professional, coaching girls and women's fastpitch, and umpiring high school and college fastpitch, there is not a more exciting sport around. When I first started umpiring no one wanted to do the girl's games because they all played like , well, girls. Starting at the local level todays girls play a caliber of softball that puts their male counterparts to shame. Their work ethic, their enthusiasm, and their skills are phonomenal. To treat them as mere eye candy is to demean their hard work and dedication to a game that makes baseball mere childs play. Pro baseball players have been humiliated when facing both men and women pitchers from softball. Ty Softlet Jr.consistently exceeded 120 mph.

So, if you want to see the most exciting game around, and they don't take hours and hours to get it done, check out the girls, and in some states, the boys, this spring and summer. You won't regret it.tf

The US Women's Softball Team is full of talented team players who play the game the way it should be played - without prima donnas - as a aging male sexist it should be noted that Finch is not the only eye candy on the team - check out Jessica Mendoza - who hits a ton.

Seriously, the so-called anchors should have focused on how hard the team works and how well they represent the sport of fast pitch softball and the country. Most major league baseball players would be hard pressed to hit a 70 mile an hour rise ball from 43 feet away. Too bad the powers at the International Olympic committee have decided to exclude women's softball after the next games.

Where to start? This comment is either racist or latent lesbianism, possibly both. I have no problems with lesbianism; I prefer it overt, however. I've been fighting racism throughout my life. Nothing about the woman's softball stats, but about her looks? I'm trying to teach young men and women of many, many races to appreciate talents as well as looks. It's disappointing to have a professional woman stereotype Olympiads as "cute" and to objectify her eyes and hair. To ironically quote a cigarette commercial, "you've come a long way, baby."
