A few months back when John McCain went to the Middle East to participate in photo-ops, spend quality time with his favorite hawk, Senator Lieberman, and pretend that his policy prescription to stay in Iraq for a hundred years was rooted in "conditions on the ground," he made a major political gaffe. Itching for military action against Iran, he said it was "common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that's well known. And it's unfortunate." That prompted Lieberman to lean over and whisper in McCain's ear a set of other canned terms that he should use when referring to Iranian-backed forces, like "Islamists, extremists," etc. But as if that wasn't enough, McCain repeated the gaffe two more times in the next two days, falsely linking the Shiite government of Iran with the Sunni Al Qaeda.

For the past few days, McCain has been claiming that the surge has brought the conditions that have allowed for Obama to take a safe trip to Iraq. This is a part of the fictional campaign to get the American people to believe the surge has worked. The point has been falsely made without challenge so many times in the news media that it has become conventional wisdom. However, anyone who paid closer attention to the events in Iraq recognizes that the surge did not begin until the spring of 2007, well over four to five months after the Sunni awakening resulted in violence to begin to sharply decline.

Since last week, McCain has referred to Czechoslovakia -- a country that hasn't existed since 1993 -- more than once. And earlier this week, he made another gaffe while on a TV interview, warning people about the dire situation at the "Iraq-Pakistan" border. Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border.

These mistakes have become alarmingly common for John McCain, and they should lead us to seriously consider the three most likely explanations for these mistakes.

One is that McCain understands the Middle Eastern region well -- understands that Iran has never supported Al Qaeda, Czechoslovakia hasn't existed for fifteen years and Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border - but has been intentionally making misleading statements to manipulate the public into believing that the reason that America's worst foreign policy decision in history to invade Iraq hasn't worked out so well is because Iran has been supporting Al Qaeda. If this is the case, John McCain is a manipulative liar who is out there to defend somebody's interests, but those interests definitely are not the United States.'

The second possibility is that McCain doesn't understand the region and actually believes all of the statements that he makes. If this is the case, the situation is pretty self-explanatory. If someone in his position in the Senate and so busy bragging about his foreign policy credentials can't get the basic facts right about what country exists, who shares a border with whom and who's helping who in different struggles, he is not qualified to lead this country.

And the third possibility is that he understands the region but has been having senior moments. Some people have been using this possibility -- without calling it "senior moments" -- in his defense as if the explanation makes things better. Of course becoming a senior citizen is not a bad thing. But the notion that it is irrelevant to one's qualifications for presidency is absurd. If the people who attribute McCain's repeated mistakes to something other than his understanding of foreign policy or intentional lies, then the only reasonable factor that's left is some kind of physical or biological factor that has been limiting McCain's ability to clearly communicate his thought processes. If that is in fact the case, it will likely to remain this way if not get worse in the future, making him a terrible choice for the biggest public job in this country.

Many people are quick to point out that just like race shouldn't be considered in deciding who can make a better commander-in-chief, age should not be either. Ironically, the argument often comes from the same people who try to explain all the big and small gaffes that McCain increasingly makes. But if McCain understands the region well and isn't intentionally lying to manipulate public opinion about the facts on the ground, then what other explanation other than a biological one can account for the repeated misrepresentations and miscommunication of the realities he claims he knows?

McCain keeps saying he does not want to and will not keep bringing up his POW experience......BUT HE DOES.....over and over and over and over........He lies and is a braggart....
Being a POW does not automatically qualify one to be President....if that was so there would be thousands of POW candidates.....there are not.

Of course, ANYthing should be taken up as an issue if it has any bearing on a candidate's mental capacity. While there are people who honestly think sex and race impact a person's fitness to ocmmand, that's not surprising given the bigotry we see every day on the news and certain peoples' refusal to accept history or anything they see that does not correlate to their worldview.

But this--McCain's disturbing tendency to make light of serious subjects, to diverge from discussing actual policy by berating his opponent on irrelevant or facetious matters, and to repeatedly mistake simple but key facts and events--is a matter of actual fitness, not perceived fitness, to govern.

And if a nation's perception of its leader is key to good government, then a leader's actual ability to think, react, and make judgments is far more integral. Regardless of the cause of McCain's incessant blunders, a responsible politician at any level should have the integrity and commitment to doing what's best for the nation that he or she would not merely submit to an evaluation of mental fitness, but insist on one without needing to be asked.

There is a neuropsychological battery of tests that is very sensitive to subtle signs of dementia. I think it's called the Reitan battery but it may have been superseded by more sensitive measures and it takes hours and involves a lot of careful measurements of cognitive function. I am pretty sure McCain has not taken it and I don't think he would be able to pass it.

I don't believe it's stupidity. I don't believe it's ignorance. I believe he is probably aware that something is amiss but doesn't want to think of what it might be because cognitive impairment is very frightening to the impaired person. Sometimes they become totally depressed and stop trying to funciton.

That would be no problem if it were a private matter but he is running to become President of the US. We have had an imbecile as a President for eight years and we cannot risk someone who can launch nuclear war who is impaired. I think we as a country have a right to demand that McCain be tested for cognitive impairment by an expert in neuopsychology and that the test results (not in detail but a summary) be shared with us. His right to privacy is not as important as our right to survive.

Well, here we are, trying to figure out if McCain is just stupid, uninformed and suffering from advanced age, or if he is showing signs of senility, possibly with a biological basis. Lots of back and forth about what is a gaffe or just a shocking show of ignorance...while we are already embarrassed by all of this, and we are not even Republicans.... Just concerned citizens on the edge of disbelief that the Grand Old Party, after having to justify ignorance, stupidity and the mind of a simpleton for so long, is now having to justify another so called candidate.

Not only is it "fair game" it is of *GRAVE* import to our Republic, it is a National security issue as far as I can see. He slowing cognitive ablilities and good judgement is not going to improve under the stress and demands of the Presidency, there can be no doubt about that.

The other possibility is that McCain is not too bright. Which is scary considering that we have put up with a stupid president for 8 years and it's embarrassed us internationally and hurt our country deeply. But age should very well be an issue. After all, the presidency ages people, let's face it. It's very stressful. People want a President who can go the distance. We are voting on the candidate not on their choice of VP. And remember: We have no idea who was running the country in the last few years of Reagan's second term. We're just all pretty damn sure it wasn't Reagan.

Senator McCain has been allowed to run on his Prisoner of War status for so long, that no one really watched to see how studied he really is in foreign affairs. It has been assumed he is a POW so he must have this vast knowledge. But General Wesley Clark was right to ask why? As we all do, Clark honored McCain's service and tenacity during that time 40 years ago. But not every brave war time act makes a person intellectually astute about things necessary to lead a country, especially the USA. McCain has shown during this campaign that he lacks that ability on several fronts, and age should be factored in, it is an altering condition.

I've wondered for years how folks could believe being locked away and tortured in a tiger cage for years could make someone a foreign policy expert. Did they have a fully stocked library at the Hanoi Hilton? Seriously though, it doesn't sense. We Americans really need to grow up and stop being so stupidly sentimental.

There's a difference between jumbling words and getting something wrong. McCain's messing up the Czech Republic and the Afghan border, just like Obama's working with world leaders for the next ten years are the kind oif errors we all make when not reading off a teleprompter.

But, McCain's confusion of Iran/Sunnis and Shiites and his Anbar province comments are getting it wrong.

We need to concentrate on when he gets things wrong. When we make a big deal out of verbal miscues, it makes us seem petty, and like the boy who cried wolf parable, the public dismisses our criticism of real errors.

The MSM is scared to death to talk about McCain and his memory loss. They are scared to death of doing anything. This MSM today is a bunch of idiots. They don't report the news...They either sell each others books or think that they know everything about fixing our economy and war. If they are that damn smart.....Why don't they get out on the campaign trail and run for office. News isn't news anymore. It's a bunch of idiots that think they are newscasters.

"Many people are quick to point out that just like race shouldn't be considered in deciding who can make a better commander-in-chief, age should not be either."

One should never harass anyone due to age, like one should never harass anyone for their gender or race. But there's a difference between making race a factor and making age a factor.

The color of your skin doesn't affect your ability to do your job.
Energy levels, memory problems, loss in the ability of abstract thinking all do.

Pointing out that McCain lacks the energy, the memory and sufficiant ability to think abstractly isn't age bashing. It's pointing out factors that will make him a poor president, should he be elected. The American public needs to know about these things before people start casting their votes. Not telling them comes pretty close to election fraud.

I think it is overly generous to blame his gaffes on his age. I know people older than he who are much sharper tacks.

The guy graduated in the lower rungs of his class.

I think he's not bright, not well-studied, and doesn't show an interest in learning anything other than how to try to present himself better on the stump.

You can't forget something you never bothered to learn in the first place.

Not to be outdone by Obama, McCain could make a high profile overseas trip, too. First he could go to East Germany, then on to Czechoslovakia, then Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. He could arrange a photo-op on the border between Iraq and Pakistan. To show that he is concerned with the problems in Africa, he could make stops in Rhodesia and the Belgian Congo.

Hi there, Has anyone ever considered the fact that Senator Mccain, may be entering the early stages of dementia. I do not mean to be disrespectful, but sure, you are allowed a mistake, but I really feel something else is going on here, and it needs to be investigated. Where are his mental health records? Nobody but nobody makes as many mistakes as he has in the past mont or two. This is absurd, he can't remember that the country has been called the Chech Republic for the past 15 years or so? Why are people giving credence to the possiblity that these are just senior moments, if they are then this senior should not be running to run the country. Why would he not realize that he said the Iraq/Pakistan border, please, there is something wrong here, and somebody, somewhere, should find out what it is. Let Mitt Romney take over, this is scary, we have already had seven years of complete
idioaracy, lets not have another eight of pure incapacitation, due to a mental disorder.

One clue that McCain's gaffes are not just senior moments ie temporary misstatements is that he repeats the same error over and over even after being corrected. Not only can he not mentally retrieve information that he once knew he doesn't retain recently learned information. I think this is diagnostic evidence that he is mentally impaired and may well be in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease. I think he is not fit to be president nor for that matter a U.S. senator. For his own good he needs to be put out to pasture and replaced with someone else. Bless his heart.

Your observations are not prejudice against age. My 78 year old mother has said the same thing: that Sen. McCain seems to be suffering from early stages of cognitive problems. We should never forget that the president of the United States must be in top physical and mental form in order to be a safe choice. McCain's "misspeaks" are too consistent, too blatant, and too wierd to be ignored much longer. I would like to see his medical records examined more closely; particularly those that relate to his cognitive abilities and mental aging.

It is not disrespectful to speak the truth about MCain's blunders. I'm 79, educated, articulate, and "with it," and I would not have the arrogance to believe that I could run a company, a store, and certainly not a nation. I wish we were frank instead of worried about speaking openly about aging; this is a serious matter, and as I've watched videos and television programs of McCain, I recognize the same senior moments my contemporaries and I experience, but we often can correct ourselves and also laugh at our gafffes---but our mistakes do not put others in danger.

We now have a president who's proud of his ignorance and non-reading habits and whose use of English is mangled and grotesque, so we do not need another "C" student whose expertise is limited, passe, and does not include economics or history, among other deficits. Let's stop worrying about whose ego we damage. McCain is definitely "not with it," and it's time for him to admit it and move on to another life. He's outdated, also, does not know how to run an organization, campaign, or even remember facts, or understand the war in Iraq, or anything relevant to our times.

Deferring to McCain is doing him and us a disservice, and it is dangerous. The combination of memory losses, blunders, and anger accompanies dwindling faculties; don't mince words!

They should get the tape of Petraeus saying that he can't comment on the success of the surge because it wasn't completely installed yet, then praise the work of the sunni's in Anbar province for kicking Al Qaeda out of the area. It is pretty clear they won't say anything to diminish Gen. America-can-trust-him-but-not-the-president!
