John Edwards On Leno: Jokes About Basketball With Obama And His Decision To "Run As A Middle-Aged White Man"

Former candidate John Edwards sat down with Jay Leno last night. As seen in the clips below, Edwards talked about his surprise that the Democratic race was still up in the air, as he thought by dropping out someone would have pulled ahead. Leno also asked if his "choice to run as a middle-aged white man," was a good decision. Talked then turned to Edwards playing basketball with Obama (Edwards won't say who won) and Edwards' son Jack, who is homeschooled. Watch the clip for hilarious doctored footage of Obama and Leno and a story about Jack's knowledge of communism.

Even his son knows what a communist is. That's funny. I wonder if he realizes that his dad favors socialist/communist policies.

It must have been a slow week on the talk shows. Did Angie Dickinson cancel?

Anyone who labels somebody or something socialist/communist, as though the two were interchangeable or identical, needs to be called out immediately for dissembling and deception. Anyone who thinks "socialism" is the same as "communism" either doesn't know the definition of either, or is a bald-faced liar. Otherwise that person would have to picket outside that nasty COMMUNIST FIRE DEPARTMENT to shut those commie bastards down. According to the criteria that one would use to label Edwards a socialist/communist, half the conservative Republicans in office would also be socialist/communists. This kind of stupidity needs to be called out for the propagandistic tripe it is over and over until everyday Americans no longer fall for it.

John Edwards is behaving like a spoiled prima donna. He should have endorsed Obama on the day he withdrew from the race.

His failure to endorse Obama, the clear frontrunner, shows that he puts his ego before what's good for the Democratic Party.

Edwards' supporters should ashamed of themselves for having supported this insufferable narcissist

Why the "should" imperative? "Should" here is just another example of how the Obama cohort seeks to leverage a kind of DISTORTED, racial GUILT to win a campaign otherwise consisting of rah-rah flummery. If "verlaine" needs absolution, he/she should find a priest

Instead of going on the Tonight Show, Edwards should be out campaigning for Obama. John Edwards is gutless and worthless

Why such venom? I was an Edwards supporter and did not care whether or not he's 'insufferable narcissist' or not but listened to what he was saying. I now support Obama and it seems to me he is saying that we should stop engaging in this irrelevant and venomous discourse.

John,

Why have you forsaken us - the TRUE DEM who could have led us to victory in November.

John Edwards the ONLY candidate who cared about the Middle Class and disadvantaged.

Look what we have to pick from.

It's a travesty.

TRUTH BE TOLD, EDWARDS COULD NOT WIN IF HE RAN AGAIN IN NORTH CAROLINA AS SENATOR, WHY HE WAS CHOSEN FOR VICE PRESIDENT IS BEYOND ME. WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT WHILE ON TICKET WITH JOHN KERRY. HE IS A LIGHTWEIGHT AND WAS AND IS A ONE TRICK PONY, ONE AMERICA, ETC. THINKING OF THAT GREAT PREACHER WHO HAS EMITTED ALL THE SERMONS THAT WE AMERICANS HAVE GOBBLED UP, HOW IS IT THAT HE OF ALL THE PEOPLE DENIGRATES WASHINGON AND ITS LOBBYISTS, HAS ONE OF HIS ARDENT SUPPORTERS, TOM DASCHLE ?? DOES THE MEDIA SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE FACT THAT DASCHLE'S WIFE, LINDA, HAS BEEN AND IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST AND INFLUENTIAL "LOBBYISTS" FOR MANY MANY YEARS!!! OF COURSE, GOOD OLD TOM HAS JOINED HER AS ANOTHER LOBBYIST, AND OF COURSE, HE PROVED TO BE A "LOSER" , WHEN HE WAS DEFEATED BY A REAL LIGHTWEIGHT, IN HIS RE-ELECTION BID. ANOTHER WINNER, ENDORSING OBAMA, BILL BRADLEY, WHO WAS VICIOUS AND USED ALL SORTS OF UNDERHANDED STATEMENTS AND NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN TACTICS WHEN HE RAN AGAINST AL GORE, HE TOO JUST BARELY DEFEATED CHRISSIE WHITMAN WHEN SHE (A NOBODY) RAN AGAINST HIM IN NEW JERSEY , BUT HE IS OUT OF THE WOODWORK MAKING DENIGATING STATEMENS AGAINST HILLARY, BUT THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN DOES NOT SAY A WORD ABOUT CENSURING HIM.. ONE MORE THING , WHEN ARE WE GOING TO REALIZE THAT OBAMA IS A TOTAL HYPOCRITE, PERMITTING HIS FAMILY TO KEEP LISTENING TO THE DIATRIBE BEING SPOKEN EVERY SUNDAY BY HIS GREAT VISIONARY AND LEADER, REVEREND WRIGHT ?? IF HE HAD THE GREAT JUDGEMENT , THAT HE CLAIMS THAT HE HAS, HE SHOULD OF VOICED HIS DISAPRROVAL, YEARS AGO, PUBLICLY , LIKE HE MADE THE "GREAT SPEECH " IN 2002 ???? WHAT BS AND THAT IS WHAT IT IS.

.....so, anyone and everyone who supports Obama is just short of a WAR CRIMINAL/ grafter bent on sliming HRC....? This is almost as paranoid and self-righteous as the venom-laced pabulum the Obama myrmidons serve up....

Edwards trumped both in his compass of the issues and early willingness to present solutions; unfortunately(?), he didn't/couldn't command a cadre of IDENTITY POLITICS fanatics like HRC and certainly Obama. The Democratic Party will regret this viscissitude....!

Why would JRE endorse Obama? He ran against everything that Obama stands for. Obama is just another corporate Democrat and his White House will be surrounded by and bounded by corporate lobbyists.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:38 PM on 03/21/2008

I think it's hard for Edwards to pick a candidate because his heart says Hillary as they are more aligned on most of the issues (the lobbyist etc things are the exceptions), but he also knows that Obama will probably be the nominee, so if he picks Hillary, he blows any chance of having some part of the Obama administration.

"Obama is just another corporate Democrat"

Neaguy, what are you basing that statement on? It is important that any facts about this be brought up now. I can understand how you would conclude that Hillary is NOT a corporate shill. Everyone knows how frugal she is as demonstrated by her ability to write a $5 million check to her campaign from the savings off her Senate salary and not even miss it. But Obama?

According to Senator Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe, "If Sen. Clinton wants to have a discussion about electability and vetting, we're happy to have it".

I agree, let's have a conversation about electability in NC, WV, PA, KY, IN, and Puerto Rico. While we're are at it- let's have a conversation about Senator Obama's less than truthful statement 'no more politics as usual' and how he and his campaign feel about the attack politics of dragging Hillary back through ditch of infidelity. Nice work Senator Obama, nice work.

The TRUTH is, Hillary owns her past- the media has made sure to remind everyone that her husband betray her in the most intimate of ways. No matter how many times Senator Obama tries to redefine Hillary, he can't. She has been standing in her truth - the beautiful and the troublesome.

You know, there's an important message buried in the rant above. Anything any Obama supporter says can somehow be turned intosomething Obama himself said -- even when he's never heard of the person who said it. We all know that Obama, or his official campaign staff, have never once brought up the situation darlamc mentions here. But I've sure seen some of my fellow Obama supporters drag it into the discussion on this blog and others. Why? It accomplishes nothing, and reflects poorly on the candidate we support. If you truly want him to be elected, stop giving those you hope will join you in voting for him reasons *not* to vote for him! Can we keep the rhetoric civil, on point, and honest here? If so, we might actually be able to sway some people to our side.

I've always said it's Obama's supporters, not Obama himself, that will cost him the general election.

Fair statement, Strywever. The very same could be said of yours. Change every appearance of Obama to Clinton in your post and it would be equally true.

hillary been directly involved in a lot more shadey stuff this campain.
literally, she will do anything to win - this is not a criticism, it is the truth.
any other candidate would have seen that their chances at vicory at this point would compromise the democratic party. the choice for hillary to stake claim at the nomination depite FEWER DELEGATES/POPULAR VOTES/STATES WON is simply harmful and its a decision that hillary has made.

John Edwards is a swine and a dirtbag for not endorsing Obama. If he had endorsed Obama, on the day he withdrew from the race, it would have created a snowball effect of endorsements for Obama from superdelegates.

Edwards' failure to endorse reveals him to be a selfish prima donna. If he decides to endorse Hillary, he'll be the biggest fake, fraud, and phony in the Democratic Party

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:14 PM on 03/21/2008

To suggest that anyone who doesnt support Obama is a "fake, fraud, and phony" is a problem. It's you psychotic Obama supporters that are going to cost Obama the election because of your obsessive attacks on anyone that doesn't agree with you. How Bush-Republican-Cronyist of you.

The real fakes, frauds, and phonies of the Democratic Party are the Obama supporters who all of a sudden claim that Bill Clinton was a horrible president and we don't want to go back to those times. I'm sure before this race started you didn't feel that way. But now that Bill is associated with your candidate's competition, you have to denigrate anyone and anything that associates with the Clintons. Now THAT makes YOU a fake, fraud, and phony.

the poster is taking that position because it would be so hipocritical for edwards to endorse hillary.. they represent opposites on a spectrum.
edwards tried to run his campaign using populist undertones, asserting that the government needs to be run for the people and not big businesses..
hillary is the candidate that who has repeatedly tried to justify the role of lobbyists in washington.
obama is the candidate that funded his campaign by the people and has repeatedly asserted that corporate influence will not run his whitehouse.

He was the only populist candidate fighting for the middle class and disadvantaged, and didn't respect the others' corporate agendas.

That's why he hasn't endorsed either of them, because he has no respect for what they represent - Corporate America.

well, in a world of imperfection, you have to choose the better of two evils.
not choosing is either cowardly or aimed for political gain down the road.

Edwards is a hapless dilettante and a table-pounding populist gasbag who runs a vanity campaign for President every four years.

He's holding out his all-important "endorsement" until he gets the best offer from whoever is obviously going to win.

After reading Russ Feingold's piece about Edwards, I agree with you.

He didn't have the personal pressures Richardson did. Richardson compromised by waiting--then followed his conscience, which I admire.

It's too late now to think that John Edwards is doing anything other than trying to cut himself the best deal.

John Edwards did the right thing by getting out - he couldn't light himself on fire and get noticed, since the race was clearly about Obama and Clinton. If Edwards threw his support to either, when he left, and that candidate didn't run away with the nomination, it would have been wasted. Better to hold it.

Now, throwing his support could be the thing that helps propel Obama towards the nomination. Endorsements don't seem to last too many news cycles, they turn into numbers quickly, and the YouTube clips get the focus again. Now that Richardson endorsed Obama, if Edwards were to endorse, or it suddenly was leaked that he was being considered for the ticket, that might just create a wave to get us out of this rut we're in about faith-based influences.

If one trusts that Edwards is being completely honest here when he says that one of his considerations for quitting was to help the Democratic party by speeding up the nomination process, this must mean that he is pro-Hillary. Because if he were for Obama, his endorsement and his delegates, would go a long way to deciding this race.

(FWIW, I don't particularly relish this conclusion: I loathe Hillary Clinton.)

I thought he removed himself from the primary race because he felt he was playing the part of Ross Perot/Ralph Nader. I certainly would like to see Edwards associated with the next administration, bur I doubt he will be interested. I hope Gore and Edwards do not wait till the convention to extend their Endorsement.
